The Place Beyond The Pines (2013)

I thought this was great. The movie's structure makes it hard to talk about without spoilers--and best to know as little as possible before watching, other than to set aside 2.5 hours. Every actor down to the small roles does great work. Not sure how he gets the performances he does, but Derek Cianfrance can make stock scenes fresh and immediate. Felt like a fully satisfying novel.

After watching, I looked up reviews from Edelstein, et al, and they seemed to be critiques of Cianfrance's publicity interviews as much as they were of the movie itself. That combined with its release at the height of lol-Gosling-Tumblr might have gotten in the way of its initial release.

Also talked about in the Drive thread:
Is there not yet a thread for DRIVE, the forthcoming Ryan Gosling vehicle (geddit)?

ben mendelsohn kinda stole the show. that guy's magnetic as hell. i need to see Animal Kingdom. also its funny how you can de-age cooper by 10 years by just shaving him.

Ben Mendelsohn's amazing in this.

I just watched this on Saturday and liked it, not as much as Blue Valentine but thought it mostly worked. So much of it turns on coincidences that I should have been rolling my eyes more but I felt like they sold it. The part toward the end back at the auto body shop with the sunglasses (trying to do this as spoiler-free as possible) really got to me.

Not sure how he gets the performances he does

saw an interesting interview with Michelle Williams around the time of Blue Valentine (think it was a Times Talk so it was probably only on NYC cable), she talked about his working method some. lots of improvisation, just pushing the actors to really inhabit the characters and try to surprise each other. the scene in BV where Gosling climbs the fence on the bridge and threatens to jump off, she said she had no idea he was going to do that and was practically scared shitless when he threw his leg over the top of the fence. (great scene)

that movie was a lot more intimate than this one though. otm with the idea that it felt novelistic. the structure was pretty ambitious I thought.

Started off ok, got increasingly turdier. I hated the next gen stuff in the final third.

What was Gosling's kid so angry about? Just made me think he was an idiot.

had to look up who that is but yeah he's really good. I liked him in Killing Them Softly too.

i think he was pissed off that he didn't look anything like ryan gosling

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 27 August 2013 19:13 (twelve years ago)

I figured it was intentional that Cooper's kid looked more like Gosling. I bet those two teen actors have good careers ahead of them.

i dont feel like i can defend this movie but i do have some affection for it... maybe its the brazen cheesiness of ben mendelsohn going "if you ride like lightning, you're gonna crash like thunder" that won me over

Hungry4Ass, Thursday, 2 January 2014 00:09 (twelve years ago)

mendelsohn is the best part of the movie imo

needs to get a bitchin lead role again like in the old days, dude is so good

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 2 January 2014 00:39 (twelve years ago)

Huh. I firmly believe that nearly all movies could deal with being shorter and that 90 mins is the perfect movie length and this didn't feel long at all to me. I watched it yesterday on a plane and LOVED it nearly as much as I loved drive. Man, I don't know what it is but something about these movies just gets me. I cried like a baby in several places (as I did with Drive) including the sunglasses scene that DMR mentioned. It's like they'll just be going along and then there's this really powerful moment that just gets me in my gut. And everyone otm re BM. I don't even know if I've ever seen him in anything before but he was great. Also, I can't help but love Gosling. Kids were great too.

i absolutely loved his new movie THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS. never read the book, marketing might make it seem like Notebookcore, but i found it really compelling and moving, made me cry. a tragedy with no real villains, set on a quiet, cold, bone white coast. go see it
