I can't sleep.

I've woken up at really odd times the last 4 or 5 days, and I can never get back to sleep. I'd say I was having nightmares when I tried to get back to sleep except it's more like insane scenario followed by insane scenario at a rapid pace and I keep having to wake myself up.(obviously I can't remember the dreams very well what with the lack of zinc ahem) Anyway I'm so physically exhausted now, I had to watch TV for a few hours this morning to rehinge my brain. Is this to do with diet maybe?

The other possibility is that it's a drugs or alcohol thing, which would really be a shame.

Is guilt an option?

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 10:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Indie guilt?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 10:48 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 10:49 (twenty-three years ago)

"when I get home from work/ sit down and watch tv/ the night falls/ just like a bad dream"

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:31 (twenty-three years ago)

last night I was woken twice by a mosquito, the first time it was so loud it actually was in my dream. Next time the fuxor was biting me. Obv. I was paranoid about it for the rest of the night. Dreams/nightmares woke me up twice too. Then there were the foxes mating outside, the noisy bastards.

I'm sooo tired

chris (chris), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I kept thinking to myself when I woke up and was still insane "WHAT IF THIS NEVER ENDS". It must be drugs I suppose.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:49 (twenty-three years ago)

sounds like THE FEAR

chris (chris), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Drugs and alcohol - YOU THINK??? :)

Take a bit of time off one or the other (or both if you think you can) and see what happens.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I would take a look at the drugs. Also trouble sleeping can be a symptom of depression, or so they say.

I frequently have trouble sleeping and it's not unusual for me to go through periods of time almost like what you describe. I can't lose sleep indefinitely, so I tend not to worry too much: eventually my body will get the sleep it needs. But I am not currently using any drugs (except occasional caffeine, which of course is quite capable of messing up my sleep).

At the very least, if you are going to keep taking drugs, you could do some research into how to possibly mitigate their effects (through diet, supplements, smart drugs, etc.). Maybe a vacation from intoxicants?

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

or get more speed.

angela (angela), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Sometimes it seems that the people most attracted to drugs are the people who can least afford to take them.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I keep thinking I should take a vacation and I had planned it to be this month, but then I met someone on Saturday and I've got my enthusiasm back again through theirs if you get me.

But yeah I might give up alcohol, I can manage that easily enough. I was out thursday, friday, saturday, monday, tuesday so I guess that can't be too good either, not taking drugs all these nights, don't worry.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

how many pills are you actually taking ronan, and how many times a week?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Never more than once a week but I'll mail you properly, it's this giant number and I can't post it all in one message, ahem.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

You had better be careful. What kind of pills are these? I'd warn anyone to be on guard against sleeplessness. Earlier this year, I started out just waking in the middle of the night, but by May and June I was losing 3, 4, 5 nights in a row at least once a week, and was suffering from extreme paranoia as a result. I'd see a doctor before it gets worse. It could be a medical problem. I still don't know what was wrong but thank god for Ambien - it's keeping me alive and sane right now.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Last night i was kept awake by old people having sex

Sofa King Alternative (Sofa King Alternative), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

over the last month, i've subsisted almost entirely on heroic doses of caffeine and sleeping pills.

it is my cheap substitute for drugs and alcohol.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

(which, i'd like to add, i plan to return to in due time)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Last night i was kept awake by old people having sex

Maybe they were on drugs.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I think they were near a loudhailer

Sofa King Alternative (Sofa King Alternative), Friday, 4 October 2002 10:06 (twenty-three years ago)

five months pass...
Major recurrance of this, the last two nights I've had fucking horrendous nightmares, the thing is I figure drugs must be involved, but I am positive it is alcohol which actually sets them off, like if I have a beer in the evening, say one or two, it seems to trigger it, if I actually go out for the evening I tend to conk out ok when I return.

Last night I dreamt I was murdered by my best friend, the night before I forget. Are there any natural sleep aids besides smoking lots of hash or something, I am going out tonight and will be drunk whether I like it or not but I'm scared of what my imagination has in store.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

are you sure it isnt' guilt?

do you drink caffeine? caffeine and alcohol made me confused in my sleep recently. i do think that alcohol is more like than pills to be causing troubled sleep though

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It might be the particular beer, I don't drink coffee really, I guess I have coke (as in coca cola) often enough, maybe it's that. It could be guilt, I found 2 euro under the seat of my car yesterday which I know wasn't mine.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

stress is the most common cause of bad sleep - if you're worried about anything, or if anything major in your life is changing. uncertainty about the future is often a factor.

also lack of exercise - the more energetic you are during the day the better you'll sleep.

(NB i am stressed, uncertain and never exercise: i sleep very badly)

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i never sleep. ever.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

it's the cousin of death, i'm told. but then i've been up since 3am, so i'm a little fuzzy.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It's 2:30 AM and I drank two pots of tea and took a nap this afternoon so here I am- at least I finally caught up on 30 Rock.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 21 May 2007 06:31 (eighteen years ago)

Sometimes I wish I didnt have to sleep, there's a ton of things I could fit into all those sleeping hours at this point in my life.

Even though I love love love to sleep. I need two of me or something.

Trayce, Monday, 21 May 2007 06:34 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, me too. There's a thread about that somewhere, where you can take a pill that means you don't need to sleep. brb when I've tested the new search function.

ailsa, Monday, 21 May 2007 07:22 (eighteen years ago)

uhhhhhhhh
this is not really the way to a start my week... probably. or maybe it is. a way.

Headphones, white noise. Should work like a charm. If not: gin, tonic.

AnnieHalldonia (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 22 March 2012 06:40 (thirteen years ago)

these, for me, are the wages of sleeping til 1pm via unemplolment

four shots whiskey have done me nothing but make me :/

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 22 March 2012 07:52 (thirteen years ago)

I feel so crappy today after 3 hrs sleep :(

tehresa, Thursday, 22 March 2012 20:08 (thirteen years ago)

drink lots of coffee during the day (but not after 5 o'clock)

tanuki, Thursday, 22 March 2012 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

also drink very strongly-brewed chamomile tea about 30 minutes before you want to sleep

tanuki, Thursday, 22 March 2012 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

when i've had trouble sleeping, doing things to help myself sleep (like drinking tea or taking pills) only makes things worse by increasing anxiety. sleep is like those little transparent spots in your eyes that you see when you're looking at a clear sky. if you focus on them, they're gone. you have to clean out your soul.
