in my women in classical antquity class i pitched a paper on sexual represntations of cleopatra post 1500, as an example of assuming womens politcal power is sexual, and discounting her in that way. So help me out, any reps from b/w Shakespeare and Liz Taylor people want to big up.

Same thing has been made out w/Elizabeth I, but not Margaret Thatcher as I recall. I don't know, maybe in a maledominated political arena women SHOULD use their sexuality as an easy/effective tool?

but cleo didnt, i mean she only slept with the men she married- commited suicde as a question of honour and not sex, really did the job of men.

yeah... sorry, I'm thinking of how she's been represented. I did mean that a woman (in a position of political power) could, should she CHOOSE to, use her sexuality to help her deal w/males in that area, but no this isn't really of any use. ARGH did M. Thatcher really do this? Aiee!

From what I understand Cleopatra was rubbish, and it was under her power that Eygpt's final dynasty fell.
Nearly all female Pharoah's are represented this way, bar Hatchesput (sp?. It was spelt differently to the Melys song in the source I read) who kicked ass and possibly Nefertiti, who may or may not have been pharoah after her husband died, noone knows because records of that era were destroyed as much as possible

She gets to fawn over Caesar in the Shaw play, but that's really about Julius, another of GBS's great men.
