markess, on the rare occasion(s) where i'm led to imagine your childhood, i inevitably return to the same mental image -> a young boy abandoned in some hushed gothic library / surrounded by tomes of long-discarded picture books / terrified but cruelly compelled to keep reading

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The scary thing is that's also the upbringing of Neil Tennant.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

mark p, you make mark s sound like he grew up in a neil gaiman comic, which is just cruel.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

the one pic that frightened the wossname out of me as a kid was a plate in a reader's digest (i think) volume of Poe stories that my mum had. i would sneak a peak at it every now and then, but it really made me feel queasy. i will scan it in sometime. It's an illustration of the pit and the pendulum, but depicting some sort of dragon like apparition wrapped around the pendulum (IIRC).

The Story of Little Suck-a-Thumb

One day, Mamma said, "Conrad dear,
I must go out and leave you here.
But mind now, Conrad, what I say,
Don't suck your thumb while I'm away.
The great tall tailor always comes
To little boys that suck their thumbs.
And ere they dream what he's about
He takes his great sharp scissors
And cuts their thumbs clean off, - and then
You know, they never grow again."

Mamma had scarcely turn'd her back,
The thumb was in, alack! alack!

The door flew open, in he ran,
The great, long, red-legged scissorman.
Oh! children, see! the tailor's come
And caught our little Suck-a-Thumb.

Snip! Snap! Snip! the scissors go;
And Conrad cries out - Oh! Oh! Oh!
Snip! Snap! Snip! They go so fast;
That both his thumbs are off at last.
Mamma comes home; there Conrad stands,
And looks quite sad, and shows his hands;-
"Ah!" said Mamma "I knew he'd come
To naughty little Suck-a-Thumb."

My Larousse has those two pics, Mark, but no housetrolls - in fact no trolls dancing to any kind of modern music, haha.

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I seem to remember a bastardisation of Red Legged Scissorman done by Savage Pencil where he had a big nob and was chopping off Clint Boon's head..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 3 October 2002 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Snipping, snipping, snipping goes the scissor man
Putting end to evil doers games
Snipping, snipping, snipping goes the scissor man
Maybe you are in his book of names!

So be good and never poison people
Just think twice before the deed is done
When you wake up guilty in the morning
You may find important pieces gone
