Ah, What To Buy, What To Buy? (or Tell Me What CDs to Get)

Right now, HMV, Virgin and Tower are having some massive UK sales. As I actually have a bit of cash on to indulge my music junkie habit, I need some ideas of what CDs to splash out on. Who better to ask than you lot? Oh, and tell me the reason why I should buy, as well.

(Ned, Maura, Dan Perry: Let's have your 2 cents, then;>)

I've already bought Suede's "A New Morning". (Limited Ed., thank you.) Say what you will, I love that band;>

I plan to go CD shopping by Saturday or so, so any ideas you've got will be welcome.

As in right this second that you would like, knowing your tastes, hm. You can never go wrong with a seventies Bowie studio album if there are any you're still missing. More modern? *ponders* Pick up Scott Walker's Tilt and get yer mind blown.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep, tilt is a goodie.

The HMV sale has some good Dr John - I picked up gris gris and the best bits are exceptional. Also the Kinks' indispensible-if-fey 'Village Green Preservation Society'.

jon (jon), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

talk talk - spirit of eden

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

PITMAN!!!!

katie (katie), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

is the clipse really any good?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

because i TOLD you to

Tis an idea, but then I've rarely done anything anyone told me to do;>

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

therefore, this thread = down in burning flames QED

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

CDs I would buy:

Underworld - A Hundred Days Off: Not only is "Two Months Off" a strong contender for single of the year, but this is the strongest body of work Underworld has put out yet. They still have a tendency to worry a groove, but now they're hitting upon beats that deserve to undulate on for 8 minutes. Search in particular "Lutein", "Twist", "Two Months Off", "Dinosaur Adventure 3D".

Boards of Canada - Music Has A Right To Children: Sinewy electronic chillout music deeply informed by hip-hop and Robitussin. The beats are mesmerizing, the environmental flourishes in the samples are breathtaking, and "Turquoise Hexagon Sun" is just mind-boggling. Search also "Aquarius", "Happy Cycling".

The Rapture: I don't know what their CD is called, but their sound is reminiscent of Robert Smith circa Faith singing over Warsaw (aka the band that became Joy Division). There is a dancey version of the song "Olio" floating over there that sounds like Robert Smith singing over a Green Velvet/DAF collaboration. I have yet to run across a song of theirs that isn't brilliant.

Opus Akoben: Again, I don't know the name of the album. This is a hip-hop collective based in Washington DC who are signed to a French record label, meaning their records are easier to find in Europe than the US. I don't know their song titles, but their style is centered around freestyling about, well, anything. Their live shows are incredible; not only do they do their own material, but they have their band play random grooves of various styles (including but not limited to bebop, cool jazz, old-school electro, go-go, drum 'n bass, and undie-hop) and then solicit topics from the audience for their rhymes. OFF THE HOOK.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

mark i got the clipse for 8 bucks used. (i doubt it's worth the $19 or whatever new.)

dan it should be pointed out that i think the rapture haven't released an album of "house of jealous lovers"/"olio" era stuff yet...

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

*ponders* Pick up Scott Walker's Tilt and get yer mind blown.

Scott Walker is always delish, so I'll jot that down.

About Bowie: Hm, I was considering getting "Heathen". Is it worth buying, or just download it?

Damn, many good choices here, so far. Ah, for more money....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

That may be, Jess, but my description is based on mp3s of (what I assume is) older stuff of theirs I've downloaded.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Anal Cunt.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

today i wanted to buy "remain in light" and "illmatic". they didn't have "ril" and illmatic was an import copy = 4 times more expensive than i thought

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

poor mitch. illmatic is like 11.99 over here!

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Not a fan of Little Speaker Dan?

As for recommendations, if Playgroup-Playgroup is a fiver in the UK HMV Sale like it is over here then go for it, fantastic album at any price but that's a steal.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

can you *really* get half of these cds in the hmv/virgin/tower sales in your town? if so, i'm moving house.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

the ones I mentioned - kinks and dr john - where £4.99. In Swindon. Thats just throwing it away. I say, search those bins and ignore the full price.

jon (jon), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

There's nothing wrong with "Little Speaker" (and quite a few things that are right); I just like the groove to "Twist" more. In fact, "Twist" has been growing on me like crazy since I first heard it; that piano riff is MESMERIZING and the percussion is just glorious.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Shit maybe I have them mixed up, mine is on CD-R, track 5 is the one I'm thinking of but mesmerizing sounds exactly the word to describe it. I should actually look at the tracklisting or even print it out.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm talking about track 3.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah ok!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

tower better have one. especially on the contemporary classical section.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Whitesnakes greatest hits! "slide it in" is the most unsubtle song I've ever heard!

Slayer - Reign in Blood or South of Heaven, everyone needs some Slayer in their life.

Beach Boys - Sunflower/Surfs Up, it's good.

Tool - Opiate, best thing they ever did.

Poison - Greatest Hits, only £4.99!

Abba - Gold is going cheap I think.

And get some Carpenters and the Band.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, ABBA Gold at 9 quid is as good as you'll see it non-used. There's some Beefheart in the sale, the Trojan box sets Martin recommended, Black Sabbath's Master of Reality for £3, the best of Culture Club for £4, OMD's Dazzle Ships for £4 - also Nicole if you're still in London you should be shopping in FOPP!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

FOPP = Fancy Other People's P_____?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah you know me.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

These albs are normally cheap in the HMV sale, and they're all GRATE;

'Countdown To Ecstasy' - Steely Dan (cynical, 'sophisticated', tuneful studio muso rockpop)

'For Your Pleasure' - Roxy Music (Stylish, clever, exciting 'conceptual' glam pop)

'Unhalfbricking' - Fairport Convention (English rock/folk pop that includes one of the most beautiful songs ever written - 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' - plus 'A Sailor's Life', which is kind of like a pastoral version of the Velvet Underground)

'Kind of Blue' - Miles Davis (heartbreaking, melancholy modal jazz - don't listen to the hatas!)

Andrew L (Andrew L), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

please: what is FOPP? Is it like a cheap record shop or something? and where is it?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Cambridge Circus Jel.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

ah I see! thanks!

earlham street, covent garden. (just googled it!)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

(though I don't get this indie garage stuff, like what happened to all those estrus and sympathy for the record industry bands?)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

"Estrus bands" just sounds WRONG.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Just listening to the new Manu Chao live album, sounds good but much more punk energy than the albums cloers to his work with Mano Negra (if you don’t have the Manu Chao albums buy them. He is French/Spanish background who mixes reggae, Cuban, Brazilian rhythms with folk –y guitar, hiphop beats , a melange of sounds which rea rich and unique. (sound like a cooking show). Mano negra was a French punk band of the 80s that Manu Chao was in and the live album is very influneced by their sound and approx a third is Mano Negra songs.

Gigi – Gigi
Young Ethiopian singer, beautiful voice, and taking Ethiopian music to the next level. Though I’m not crazy about all the songs

Mongo Santamaria Skin to Skin
Best example óf Afro-Cuban jazz you’ll find anywhere.

Someone mentioned Dr.John, the Dr. John 2 disc anthology is grrreat. The whole development of his style from pre-psychedlia to the Nighttripper to solo explorations.

Earth n’ Bass or Geosonic Grooves
great examples of global electronica which is (to me) one of the most intersting things going on in music today and you get to hear stuff like Turksih hiphop and north african drum n'bass, tabla n' bass and so on

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

"talk talk - spirit of eden
mis-teeq - lickin on both sides
v/a - digital disco
dmx - the great depression
abc - the lexicon of love
clipse - lord willin"

Jess I want to marry you and HAVE YOUR BABIES!!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 23:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Aqua - Aquarium (I bought it today for 1.99 from the Vinyl Exchange)

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 23:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess and Tim in worldwide love shockah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 October 2002 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 3 October 2002 09:29 (twenty-three years ago)

can you *really* get half of these cds in the hmv/virgin/tower sales in your town? if so, i'm moving house.

Come on down, Michael; London always has room for more music junkies;>

Jess and Tim in worldwide love shockah.

I'd say so! Certainly never saw THAT comin'....

Jel and Tim: Yup, still here, and I'll definitely check FOPP out. I walked through Rough Trade (Notting Hill Gate) last night, but that was a wasted effort, as I really didn't have time to browse.
