Pub Quizzes

do you go to one? do they (or a similar concept) exist in your country if you're not in the UK or Ireland?

name the pub, one of your team names (the only point of them is to be as topical and as hilarious as possible of course), the prize and how well you do in it...would like to compare

i was goin to the quiz at the Frog & Forget-Me-Not in Clapham for a while earlier this year, the prize was just a crate of beer but we considered the sheer pride, honour and smugness of coming top much more of a reward...we never won tho...

I would never consider such a thing...

Yes, as often as possible.

Oh dear, where do I start? I love pub quizzes and go to them even more than I go to gigs! My first pub quiz experience was at a pub called the Jersey Lily when I was a student in Bristol. I never came close to winning (it was just me and one friend and occasionally assorted hangers-on). This gave me the pub quiz bug, having already been a fan of Trivial Pursuit & TV quiz games. When I moved to Oxford I started off going to a quiz at the Three Goats Heads. Someone in there recommended the Donnington Arms which was much nearer my house. After going along to their Tuesday night fun quiz, I soon got drafted into the Quiz League team, which at the time included (sleb name dropping alert!) COLIN GREENWOOD FROM RADIOHEAD (NB, this was 1994).

Our team were league champions on three occasions but then the team collapsed with ppl going their separate ways (fatherhood, the nightshift and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan). So I defected from that league, Inquizators, to the Oxford Mail league, changing pubs to the Shelley Arms in the process. Our fortunes have been mixed (we are currently bottom of Division 1 and have only won one match, with the season almost over) but at least I get my mugshot in the local paper from time to time!

i did one once at the ring of bells in shipley.

i would like to do pub/pop quizzes but i don't know anyone who does them:(

I still do other quizzes besides the league one. Last night my girlfriend and I went to a pairs-only quiz at the Hobgoblin and won two polo shirts and £30 of HMV vouchers. The previous week we won two T-shirts and two bottles of beer. I hope they don't ban us ;)

There's a bar at uni that had a Pictionary night once. The prize was free tickets to see some crap play or something. My girlfriend and I entered ourselves, and absolutely destroyed all opposition. We were not graceful in our victory, gloating remorselessly over our opponents.

The secret to Pictionary is picking a partner that's on the same wavelength as yourself, you find yourself able to guess what they're drawing after they've only drawn one crooked line and made a couple of (illegal) gestures.

An IL* pop/quiz team should be able to clean up (wouldn't it be grate to earn a living from pub quizzes!)

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 3 October 2002 08:26 (twenty-three years ago)

That's actually a very good idea. An ILX quiz team would RULE that pub...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 October 2002 08:28 (twenty-three years ago)

ok, lets set up an ilx team, yea!

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 3 October 2002 08:34 (twenty-three years ago)

"Quick, those eye ell ex ores have arrived! Shred the music and film questions!"

Last nite I saw someone cheating by txting his mate. He was quickly pounced upon.....

Last time we went to the kwiz at the Shepherd's in Highgate (as frequented by Simon Pegg, sleb fanz) this bloke from the team at the table next to ours actually walked out of the pub with the answer sheet and not 1 but 2 mobile phones! We loudly denounced him and I wanted to trip him up when he came back but the others wouldn't let me. Anyway they did woefully badly and we came 2nd so it is true cheats never prosper. Mobile phones are the curse of the pub kwiz.

I want to do a pop quiz round Pete's bar one night.

I like them. Last one I did we won by an embarrassingly huge amount (not because of me particularly because it was peasy) and all the regulars hated us.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 3 October 2002 08:57 (twenty-three years ago)

There's quite a good monthly pop quiz at the Embassy. The team I'm in won it a couple of times, then was soundly beaten once. This week we would have won if we'd been a little more strategic in how we played our joker.

Jokers (and other goofy novelty features) in pub quizzes = resounding dud btw.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 3 October 2002 08:59 (twenty-three years ago)

The novelty feature of giving the currently winning team an extra free drink after each round as a 'handicap' is a CLASSIC, Tim.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 3 October 2002 09:05 (twenty-three years ago)

My dad goes to a pub quiz every week religiously, his team win almost every week - even though they now get handicapped if they've won the previous week. Instead of spending their £20 or whatever it is every week they keep it in a sorta prize fund and spend it all at the end of the year on a big night out. You could have a lot of little ILX quiz teams and then use the collective winnings to have a massive get together.....

Plinky (Plinky), Thursday, 3 October 2002 09:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, I noticed when I was in the settle last night (home of dodgy chasers for round winners) that they have a new pop quiz every Sunday night. Perfect for ruin come Monday.

I no longer do the quiz at my gaffe, too busy. I still write the questions though.
