why does well-being look like this?

or i guess i should ask: when you think of "well-being" do you think of arms outstretched? is it just shorthand for freedom? or being right with God?

raising your arms up like that lifts the diaphragm and gets more air into your lungs iirc

internet shorthand anyway. but i'm sure the greeting card industry tapped into stretching = bliss a long time ago.

i wonder if their are cultures where you have to keep your arms down away from heaven so that you don't offend god(s).

I watched a UK comedy show (Modern Life Is Goodish) last night and Dave Gorman was talking about how clocks in adverts are always set to 10:08 or 2:50 because that position indicates happiness. I always thought it was so the hands didn't obscure the clockmaker's name.

outstretched arms = embracing the lifebliss of mother earth with open arms

Spectrum, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 14:58 (twelve years ago)

i just asked maria how she would know if someone were blissfully happy. what would they be doing. body language. and she threw her arms out wide and did the pose. and then i asked her when was the last time she actually saw someone do this and of course she couldn't remember other than when people finish a race. because hardly anyone does this. but we all think of it when we think of extremely happy/blissful. so, i guess its just a human thing. i guess people do it when they win the lottery or do well on the price is right. i think it means freedom. because freedom is love.

oh yeah and singers too. when they emote. it also means that you aren't afraid. you aren't shielding yourself. so, that would mean calm and happy. free.

When we cross our arms, it's a protective gesture, both in signaling negativity/fear and physically protecting the heart and lungs from attack. Makes sense that the opposite of this gesture would signal openness and positivity.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 15:31 (twelve years ago)

Funny, watched a programme on the Comedy Channel that said that it had been standard in advertising to display all clocks at the 10:08 position since it made it look like the clock was smiling. Just being reminded of taht here since everybody's arms seem to be in pretty much the same position.
10:08 meant taht the clock looked like it was smiling but was just off symmetry enough to make it look natural. Over symmetricality removed the feeling of well-being that this installed in potential customers. Funny thing this guy noticed was that the practise of setting clocks in advertising to 10:08 had continued over into digital clocks which removed any meaning from the act. Occurs to me that t could have been advertisers being quasi ironic but it does make it look like they're missing the point of why this was done. Anyway the guy noticed that pretty much every digital clock he found in advertising maintained this 10:08 readout which isn't clever.

Conclusion

Whether we raise our hands or not is not the litmus test of theological orthodoxy or charismatic credentials. It doesn’t make you a Christian or even a keen one. It just makes you one who puts their hands in the air. If you want to and you think it’s appropriate go for your life. And if you don’t, that’s fine. Just remember the words of 1 Samuel 16:7, ‘The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks upon the heart’.

Raising your arms in the air signals sexual availability. You release pheremones. Well-being = well-laid.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 15:50 (twelve years ago)

I think these images are a fairly poor representations of well-being. Among other things, well-being is not manifested as a single well-defined emotion, making it very difficult to photograph.

What these photos are substituting for well-being is exaltation, because the people meant to respond to these images are seeking, not experiencing, well-being in their lives. They imagine that if they achieved well-being, they would experience it as the photos represent it.

i want to say one word to you, just one word:buzzfeed (difficult listening hour), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 22:22 (twelve years ago)

gonna calculate at what time the hands are exactly symmetrical circa 10 o'clock

ok so the number of degrees the hour hand passes beyond 10 are number of minutes/2 or m/2

the number of degrees the hour hand is away from 12 is therefore 60-m/2

the number of degrees the minute hand passes beyond 12 are number of minutes x 6 or 6m

60-m/2 = 6m

60 = 6.5m

6.5 into 60 = 65 into 600

9 remainder 15

so 9 and 15/65 minutes, cancelled down to 9 3/13 minutes

THE UNCANNY HOUR OF WELL-BEING AND JUBILATION
