People who run in the office

A member of senior management just went running across the office for some reason. What the fuck is wrong with these people, have they no sense of dignity?

If you are one of these people I don't know what to say to you but you should probably stop.

Haha I was thinking precisely this earlier on today. Our dumpy little office manager (sorry, horrible description but it's more or less accurate) legged it across the office in order to answer a ringing phone. Thing is, there's only five other people in my office and it measures about 15 metres end-to-end, it was the shortest-lived, least necessary burst of speed I've ever seen outside of those people who only speed up for the last three steps when crossing a road.

have they no sense of dignity?

When I was dying inside every minute of my first office job, being sidelined, generally considered to be shite, I used to be guilty of this sometimes. Partly as a pisstake of more successful running colleagues, partly to make it look like I had something worthwhile to do. The stupid thing is it worked, those same more successful colleagues would assume I was engaged on important, demanding tasks because I'd run to and from the photocopier with my sudokus. But sense of dignity? No, there was no question of dignity.

I'll still take an occasional full-pelt run down a corridor if I can be sure of not being spotted - but that's different and I'll defend it to the death, because sprinting down a corridor is utterly brilliant.

run like nobody's watching
answer the phone like nobody's listening

when I was a runner in TV I actually had to run a lot. on two/three occasions of tech meltdown my actual running speed was a factor in whether there was dead air on bbc two or not. definite buzz in this.

This was pretty much the scene in my office as well.

Ha, I just watched Broadcast News for the first time about two weeks ago.

I have to speed walk often where I work, but I haven't had flat out run yet.

Striding is the way to go when you need to move quickly.

calumerio, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 15:10 (twelve years ago)

oh when i actually need to move quickly i usually just trip over a chair or some books or my own feet

lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 15:13 (twelve years ago)

i have obviously never tried to run in an office but it would be calamitous for sure

In my old job, the second-in-command was a very heavy footed person anyway and would run/walk wherever she went, so there was always this sound of rapid clomping dopplering down the hallway past our door whenever she did anything.

The only other time anybody ever ran in that office was when there were fights and people would run to break them up/gawk.

What about the trend for carrying ever-bigger bags around? Those little cases with the telescopic handles were bad enough - but now I see people wheeling actual fucking suitcases in & out of work. It won't do.

"partly to make it look like I had something worthwhile to do"

this is what runners/fast walkers in the office are up to. they want to make it look like they're working on something important
