Ron MacLean. I needn't say more.

So Canadians (and maybe Americans who watch Hockey Night In Canada), did you feel like you'd been kicked in the gut on Monday, or do you not give a rat's ass? It could be argued that Ron MacLean represents the very core of who we are - calm, intelligent but not flashy about it, polite, friendly, sly, and we like to make fun of stupid people (if you've watched Coach's Corner you know what I mean) without them knowing we're doing it. At one point the CBC was getting 2000 emails per hour about his leaving. Apparently they are in talks again and the Globe & Mail has come out with a report that a deal has been reached. Has the reaction here surprised you?

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 3 October 2002 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

HNIC without Ron MacLean is complete and utter mentalism, so I'm not surprised there has been such an outcry.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 3 October 2002 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave Q to thread!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i watched some hockey night in canada. coach's corner was rub but you know it's kinds of like when des lynam left the BBC for ITV and it still didn't matter really.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure if this is true, but the two cases don't compare since Ron MacLean is not going anywhere (of any comparible importance) if he doesn't re-sign with the CBC - he'll simply be gone! Don Cherry by himself or with Scott Oake or Kelly Hrudey or with Dave Hodge WILL NOT BE THE SAME. Sorry.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

The idea of someone getting 25 times what I do per year to talk about hockey is kind of obscene on the one hand, but:

1) Don Cherry apparently gets paid $700,000. (or so I hear)
2) MacLean has to put up with Don Cherry.

So I say give him more, but also give me a cut. Thanks!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

The other thing that must be kept in mind is that MacLean was getting $400,000/year to do just about all CBC sports, whereas Don Cherry is geting $700,000 to do HNIC alone. That's bullshit.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

maclean is a twat. end of story.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh yeah and sean has posted in ILE. now what has bought this on?!?!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

The invocation of Canadianness. If we talk about toques loudly, he'll stay.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Please don't call Ron MacLean a twat! Didn't you watch any beer commercials while you were here, Julio? Don't you know that we like to kick the snot out of people who make fun of our national institutions? SEAN! DAVE Q! NICOLE! FITE!

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

a really twattish thing he said was abt a goal tender who let in a few in the semi finals of stanley cup last season (can't remmeber name) so Ron tells a story abt how he signed an autograph for this kid who is in hospital (there was a bit more to it): 'That's the kind of guy he is!' and you've got to ask what does that have to do with anything abt the game.

''Please don't call Ron MacLean a twat! Didn't you watch any beer commercials while you were here, Julio?''

i watched far too many commercials. what is it with you ppl?! can't you make any TV programmes?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

It's weird that you're saying these things about Ron, Julio, when Don Cherry shows off so many more characteristics that are worth dicing.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, maybe i paid more attention to Ron. and i only watched about three or four of these.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Things generally go very wrong when we make full programmes, i.e. The Littlest Hobo, Danger Bay, The Mad Dash, and about a million other shit TV shows. We just happened to get SCTV, Kids In The Hall, Four On The Floor, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and HNIC right, and some of our beer commercials are funny.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

BTW can you email me yr home addy sean so i can send a rec I burnt for you.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

''and some of our beer commercials are funny.''

heh how do you know they aren't made by american adverstising agencies?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Because they're too cheap and goofy. For instance, the commercial featuring the American guy making fun of Canadians for having pet beavers was Canadian, and the guy who played the American is from Winnipeg (where I'm from). We'd be able to tell if Americans made them. And I said "some". The unfunny ones are made by Americans!

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, okay then.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

How long were you in Canada, Julio?

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Please don't say "too long".

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

ron maclean and don cherry like to come off as adversarial on t.v. but behind closed doors they like to hang out together naked in a hot tub, smoking cuban cigars and laughing about fleecing small-market canadian teams.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

three months in toronto (I was working but i really liked the country, it's just the TV wasn't very good really and all the hockey references during the 'soccer' world cup were really pissing me off but otherwise it was really good).

i remember one good beer commercial: abt the americans teasing that canadian when he asked for the beer and then this gorgeous woman (his date) calls him and he goes with her leaving the yanks looking stupid.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Here in Toronto we get both Canadian and American channels, and we can see the way the Canadian and American markets handle beer commercials, and there's a world of difference, typically. There's a series of commercials for Molson (I think) where there's someone talking to the camera about how they're about to forgive all of the sins/problems/whatever of another character on the screen, just because that other character is drinking Molson, a "cool crisp import from Canada"...and typically the commercials are exceedingly dull-witted and sexist to boot. That's not to say that the commercials from Canada aren't sexist, it's just that they're typically not so dumb. (Okay, the ones currently running for Molson EX are definitely an exception.)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, they do overdo the hockey references. You're one up on me, as I'm one of only 5 or 6 Canadians who've never been to Toronto. Sean keeps bugging me to go for a visit, and I will. As you probably realize, Toronto isn't really Canada.
Ron and Don are buddies, and just about all sportscasters in Canada are notorious drunks, but then, so are most Canadians!

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, not really. Talking about hockey and beer does tend to get us riled up. I should smack myself for ragging on Toronto as well. I guess I should experience it beofre I criticize it.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 3 October 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

We don't want you here any more, you prairie hoser!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 3 October 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

you couldn't pay me to go to toronto.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 3 October 2002 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

FITE! FITE!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 3 October 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry buddy. WE'RE COMING, AND WE'RE GONNA FUCK YOUR SHIT UP!

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 3 October 2002 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Silly fools! You will be overwhelmed by the fact that there's a Tim Horton's on EVERY CORNER here and will soon forget all about battle and get down to what's real: APPLE FRITTER AND AN EXTRA LARGE COFFEE.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 3 October 2002 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I knew you'd come around to the fact that Tim's is fantastic. You can get some of their crack-a-licious coffee and a snack for much less than a single cup of coffee at, say, Second Cup or Starbucks. I don't know about apple fritter, though. Boston Cream doughnut... Blueberry Burst muffin... WAHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 3 October 2002 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

BASTARD! You just HAD to say 'apple fritter' didn't you? Now I'm hungry.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 4 October 2002 00:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Re: Coach's Corner - It's funny how it grows on you. Cherry is like the crazy uncle that always get drunk and takes off his pants at weddings - but we love him anyway. Still, it can't/won't be RIGHT without Ron MacLean.

Re: Beer commercials. The one that I find amusing right now is the Alexander Keiths ad that makes fun of Torontonians (aka check out dude in his big city black leather coat getting down with all the 'byes') apparently only runs on the east coast - but we get to see it on the time shifted channels like CTVEast or whatever it is that's running it.

Re: Toronto bashing here - Don't you EVEN...

Kim (Kim), Friday, 4 October 2002 00:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish I had a dish... Given how ugly most of Don's suits are, I wish he would take them off. Whoh! Head shake needed! Yeah. Toronto bashing is pretty boring, and it just breeds more bashing. I live in Winnipeg. No one gets bashed the way we do. Or ignored!

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 4 October 2002 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmmm... Winnipeg. I think I've heard of that. Is it near Vancouver? /ignorant Ontarian

Kim (Kim), Friday, 4 October 2002 03:06 (twenty-three years ago)

HE'S BACK!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 4 October 2002 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

If Winnipeg was near Vancouver we'd probably be more appreciated.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 4 October 2002 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay!
