Lately when I disagree with people they reply that I am not giving them respect. Is respect compliance? What is respect?

You know what it means to me.

Treating another person as though he was intelligent, I think. You can disagree with someone respectfully.

The only people you can show too much respect too are opposing football teams, it would appear...

Nobody deserves respect unless they earn it, and if they insist on it they usually have no way of earning it

The best way around that little conundrum is asking the person displaying a lack of respect for others if they have any for themselves.

Oh Suzy, that's like asking a kid if they would throw a crisp packet on the floor at home. They invariably say yes.

I disrespect people because I have too much respect for myself.

Pete, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, asking someone if they have any self-respect is not necessarily rhetorical

suzy, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The only thing worse than respect is self-respect.

I don't really understand this 'respect' business. I think it's an American thing.

seven years pass...

to me, respect is one of the biggest operating factors in any social interaction. am i getting it, am i giving it, am i allowing it for myself -- too much of it, etc.

Pygmalion was based on this idea.
