How to go about finding a lost dog

Usually I take care of my parents' dogs when they go out of town, but this time we all were OOT, so they stayed with my aunt. One of the dogs -- the one with separation anxiety and resourcefulness -- escaped this morning, and we couldn't find her when we got back in town. We're using Pet Harbor and Pet Finder, put up a couple text-only signs (they were done short-notice), asked some other dog-owners to keep an eye out, etc.

Is there anything else we should do?

Additional (pessimistic) info: the tag w/ my parents' phone number is missing, and the chip is unreadable.

OK, we're not doing Pet Harbor ($400!!).

Local paper usually has a section for lost pets, where you can post a listing for free if you've found one

Put up a "Dog: Missing" on craigslist, just in case? It only takes 10 minutes and it's free, so there's no downside?

obv you'll want to keep an eye on local animal impounds as well, maybe get in touch w/ them before hand? even if they don't have the dog they might here reports of a similar stray dog they just haven't trapped yet. definitely put up flyers w/ photo, description of dog, collar. did yr aunt walk the dog much while she had it? may give you some idea of where the dog is familiar w/, what route he knows. i've known a few pets in town here that were recovered via facebook chains. i would also not be shy about putting up flyers and hitting up surrounding neighborhoods. good luck.

might hear reports rather

I think this was the first time my aunt had them, and that was from Friday night to this afternoon. We did check around the route she took, and some nearby parks, to no avail, yet. Well try the Facebook thing.

Well be calling local animal shelters tomorrow as well.

Is the dog collared and chipped?

oh that's such good news.

She was trying to cross a busy expressway (!) when a driver somehow trapped her and persuaded her to get into her car. The driver wanted to adopt her straight away (and tbh I would've preferred that to the more pessimistic ideas that I was convinced about), but was persuaded to leave our girl with a vet. I think my mom connected with the parties in question via Craigslist.

Thanks everyone for the advice and well wishes! I'm kind of astonished this has a happy ending!

Wow - I am really glad that worked out. Pretty cool how it came together. I didn't want to post something not helpful, but was thinking "jesus that would feel awful" because I wouldn't have known what to do.

So glad this ended quickly and well!

Was going to recommend Facebook; saw someone local recover a missing dog over the course of a week through a huge amount of reposting.

Leeeee I am so relieved. I miss my baby so much. A lot of people are looking for him but it does not look good. I was going to offer encouragement... once my dog disappeared in the woods and he found a house where they were having a dinner party. He probably heard the music and smelled their pets and figured he'd ask for help. He scratched the front door until someone answered... they took him in and called us to let us know he was at the neighbors' party!
