BBC National Radio Stations Poll

I don't think this has been done? Sorry if this has been done.
Vote for your favourite, I guess (I thought about 'vote for the one you actually listen to the most', would this be the same as favourite for most people? I guess it would turn on how much time you spend listening to the radio with flatmates/spouse/workmates/whoever, and the extent to which their tastes are in sync with yours? But vote for your favourite is probably best I think).

Predicting that the thread will mostly be people praising 1Xtra and Radio 3 before the results reveal the size of ilx's silent majority of 6 Music loving lurkers.

Yeah, I like some stuff on 6 Music too, I didn't mean to sound like I was disparaging people who like 6 Music.

Nothing wrong with disparaging people who like 6 Music

Austrian Economics (nakhchivan), Friday, 11 October 2013 20:54 (eleven years ago)

I listen to some 6 Music shows via the iplayer, I only tend to hear daytime 6 Music when visiting a local radio shop that seems to play it all day. I was in there recently and Mark Radcliffe was getting his listeners to send in awful puns based on combining 80s indie bands and foodstuffs (I think), I was struck by how much like an audio ILM thread it was.

I do listen to it! Just tends to be specific programs via the iplayer, so I don't have to risk hearing Mark Radcliffe asking his listeners to send him puns.

yeh fair enough I guess, I just found it funny

anyway sorry to be predictable but I literally never choose to listen to any of these except 1x & r3. I have this idea in my head that r4 is something I might listen to occasionally but in reality I just don't.

swmp thing (wins), Friday, 11 October 2013 21:06 (eleven years ago)

I like to listen to Ken Bruce on radio 2 and the Craig Charles Funk Show can be fun(ky)

۩, Friday, 11 October 2013 21:09 (eleven years ago)

I used to listen to r4 for hours and hours when I was about 10, but I find most of it unbearable now. I tend to only hear it if my Dad's giving me a lift somewhere.

it was discovered that there's no rule that a dog cannot play basketball (bends), Friday, 11 October 2013 21:11 (eleven years ago)

I listen to Craig Charles a bit too, good housework show.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Friday, 11 October 2013 21:12 (eleven years ago)

I do wish he'd shut his yap and just play more music, though.

My radio day usually involves listening to local current affairs first thing in the morning, then 6 Music from 8am - 10:30am, then over to Ken Bruce for Pop Master, then back to 6 Music till Steve Lamacq comes on, at which point it's time to turn on the television anyway.

Do people think 6 Music lives up to it's billing as the station that carries on the legacy of John Peel (as I'm sure I've heard BBC people refer to it)? Someone put some Peel shows from 2001-04 up on soundcloud a while ago, which is the era when I was listening to him, and it was great fun in a nostalgic way but Christ almighty, he played a lot more boring indie than I remembered. I think the good stuff he played was so exciting to me that I just deleted all that time spent listening to Cinerama and Delgados records from my memory.

central nervous serpentine (bends), Saturday, 12 October 2013 13:24 (eleven years ago)

He played a lot of the fall and crappy man half biscuit and similar trash so yes, a lot of boring indie but plenty of good stuff too.

۩, Saturday, 12 October 2013 15:01 (eleven years ago)

Something about 6 Music where there are a lot elements that I would generally quite like on their own but combined in a way that makes them feel wearisome.
This trailer for a John Cooper Clarke doc has been on before the film the last few times I've been to the cinema, promoting a live broadcast of one his gigs that's coming up, and there are a lot of 6 Music types appearing. I like a fair few of these people on their own and John Cooper Clarke himself is a hero, but if I'd seen this trailer having never heard of JCC I think I'd have been put off quite strongly:

central nervous serpentine (bends), Saturday, 12 October 2013 16:12 (eleven years ago)

The first time I saw it there was a point where i was thinking 'surely not all the talking heads are going to be middle aged men' and then someone who wasn't a middle aged man appeared and it was Kate Nash, I think that is where I would have decided to never listen to John Cooper Clarke if I wasn't already familiar with him.

central nervous serpentine (bends), Saturday, 12 October 2013 16:15 (eleven years ago)

It's so pompous as well, it doesn't even feature any of JCC's poetry, the idea that these guys are so impressive that the fact they like John Cooper Clarke is in itself meant to make you want to check him out, despite the fact none of them says anything even vaguely interesting. Or is the idea that only people who already like JCC would be interested in this? The way it's constructed seems to give the impression that this is meant to work as an intro to him, though.

central nervous serpentine (bends), Saturday, 12 October 2013 16:18 (eleven years ago)

where i work, radio 1 is piped in all day, every day, and while it's true that i've developed something like stockholm syndrome towards a few songs (the dizzee rascal/robbie williams collab comes to mind) i think i'd actually be driven crazier if it were ANY of the other stations (apart from 1Xtra, probably)

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 12 October 2013 16:31 (eleven years ago)

strange thing about 1Xtra, i think i prefer daytime to (most of) the nighttime specialist shows

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 12 October 2013 16:34 (eleven years ago)

1xtra daytime is likeable, and aims likeability, in such a casual way - you don't get that hysteric edge of neediness that ruins most daytime pop radio dj chat.

I've had 6music on in the office pretty much everyday for the last two years, but I never listen to it aside from that. They play Slight Return by The Bluetones once every six weeks. The whole pantheon of music, and that crops up so often. Extraordinary. Disgusting. I have no idea what anything is on the rare occasions I hear any Radio 1.

But I've voted 5live, because I listen to it the most, have done for years, and feel a bit sad when presenters move shows, like when Shelagh Fogarty moved from the breakfast show. So there.

The two votes for radio 1 is what I find most baffling here. Is there anything radio 1 does that either 1Xtra or 6 Music don't do better?

surprised at 4's dominance tbh, for every decent thing it does there's something ultra-dull and something so fucked the Daily Mail wd reject it for being too Right.

I listen to Annie Nightingale's show on the iplayer sometimes... for some reason I thought it was on 6 Music but I see it's actually radio 1. 1Xtra and radio 3 are the only stations I ever listen to on a radio, with the others it's just specific shows on the iplayer.

Dispiriting article on how the Radio One playlist gets chosen
http://www.theguardian.com/media/2014/may/25/radio-1-playlist-secrets-uncovered-battle-of-brands

It's faintly depressing to hear bands referred to as "brands" with their worth determined by online data. Stats is business talk. It isn't creative, it isn't art, it's box-ticking. It's playing people the kind of music that they're already listening to

۩, Sunday, 25 May 2014 14:49 (eleven years ago)

i was going to respond to that but reading the article i can see it's already been pretty comprehensively responded to

۩, Tuesday, 27 May 2014 15:32 (ten years ago)

ahh

right, not ever i don't think, which is why the reporter's closing complaint makes you wonder if she has actually fundamentally misunderstood the entire subject of her article

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 27 May 2014 15:35 (ten years ago)

Would need to ask someone older than me but the earliest i remember him on was about 8pm. Maybe when i was young late 70s/early 80s he may have been on about 7 but id be surprised if he was ever daytime radio other than covering for someone on holiday.
He was always on TOTP's though which is how I knew who he was as a kid.

۩, Tuesday, 27 May 2014 15:38 (ten years ago)

anyway it seems all you need to do to get playlisted is "buy" followers and likes on twitter and youtube. No doubt everyone of these new bands on there already know..

۩, Tuesday, 27 May 2014 15:40 (ten years ago)

peel had a lunchtime show for a week in the early 90s - covering for someone i guess. along with playlist tracks he'd put on something from trout mask replica every day.

but yeah peel is irrelevant to that article.

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 27 May 2014 15:52 (ten years ago)

In 2012, the BBC announced that part of Broadcasting House, the Egdon Wing, would be renamed the Peel Wing.[48][49] Following the death of Jimmy Savile, when there were numerous revelations about sexual misconduct between some broadcasters and under-age girls, and Peel's own autobiography in which he acknowledged a relationship with a 15-year-old girl in 1969, during which she became pregnant, it was announced in October 2012 that the decision would be reviewed.[50] However as of May 2014 no outcome of this review has been announced, and consequently the building is still known as the Peel Wing.

sleepingsignal, Tuesday, 27 May 2014 15:58 (ten years ago)

The difference is it was legal where they got married

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2014/jun/05/bbc-radio-1-axe-djs-edith-bowman-rob-da-bank-nihal

BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra are to axe DJs including Edith Bowman, Rob Da Bank and Nihal in a schedule shake-up driven by the need to cut costs.

Controller Ben Cooper admitted that the cull of presenters – which includes Mike Davies, Jen Long, Ally McCrae, CJ Beatz, Crissy Criss and Robbo Ranx – have been driven by cuts across the corporation introduced after the last licence fee settlement.

"These cuts to our budget are hurting," said Cooper, controller of Radio 1 and 1Xtra. "It means I have had to make some tough choices and say goodbye to some friends and respected colleagues."

Cooper has overhauled the station's schedule from September to include new shows for DJs Alice Levine and Huw Stephens, and a new three-hour rock show on a Sunday night.

The rock show, which will follow the Official Chart Show, is being positioned as an "alternative to the various Sunday night TV talent competitions".

Presenter Daniel P Carter said it would provide a break from the "Simon Cowell circus", a reference to ITV's flagship entertainment show.

Levine, 27, has been given a new weekend afternoon show on Radio 1 as part of a continuing drive to attract a younger audience.

She is currently hosting a late night show with DJ Phil Taggart.

In 2012, 27-year old Nick Grimshaw was named as the surprise choice to take over from veteran Chris Moyles as host of the coveted Radio 1 breakfast show.

From September, Stephens will be given an extended late evening programme, Monday to Wednesday, focusing on new music.

Cooper added: "Tough decisions have been made but the strategy remains for the stations to continue to innovate and invent new ways to reach their younger audience.

"I believe these new schedules continue to innovate, reflect and celebrate the UK's youth and music culture.

rob da bank is really a 6 music dj, let's face it

huw should have always had that 10pm slot imo

kind of hurts to lose a dedicated national "bbc introducing" show

dan & phil fans are LIVID that their boys are now only on for an hour a week

the biggest thing here to my mind is getting rid of the sunday request show, which has been an institution for what, 30 years? and replacing it with a 3-hour rock show??

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 5 June 2014 21:16 (ten years ago)

radio one has been son of smashie and nicey for a decade or more now. It was semi decent 90-95 i thought. Maybe thats just my age of course. But even then it was just the best of a bad lot during the day.

I listened to the whole of a Steve Wright in the Afternoon the other day on a long car journey. It operates in some sort of parallel musical universe.
