In West Africa and parts of the Middle East, Maggi cubes are used as part of the local cuisine. In Liberia, they are used as an application to the cut umbilical stump of newborn babies - 26% of newborn deaths in Liberia are due to infection, and inappropriate treatments such as Maggi cubes contribute to this.[2]

Interestingly, the recipe for Maggi seasoning sauce varies around the world. Versions produced or marketed in the United States, Mexico, and various European and Asian countries differ in pungency and concentration. Some Maggi aficionados swear by the German or French versions.

Here, Maggi is big for their instant noodles

taxi tomato or bag tomato (Trayce), Thursday, 17 October 2013 07:34 (eleven years ago)

We used to get toldoff for calling it, as in "pass the maggi" as that's a brand name not what it is.

So, we looked at the bottle and said "How do you pronounce "Wurst" ?"

(we lived in Brugen at the time)

Of course, thanks to this thread, I shall have "Maggie's Farm" playing in my head all day now.

to me the name recalls the delicious baby from the simpsons

I woke up hungover this morning and remembered this thread, had to lol @ the fact that I started a thread about condiments, got called a racist, and pulled someone up for their reading comprehension. It's like the ILXiest night I've ever had.

Just started seeing TV ads here in Canada for a Maggi product (not this one I don't think); the ads are British (ie English accents) and they pronounce the product name like the woman's name. Odd to me because it is a beloved brand in NZ (where I am from) but the TV ads pronounce it as ma-jee. I am annoyed at the discrepancy for some reason.

Nestlay vs Nestle

Oh right, in NZ in the 80s it definitely used to be NESTLES (rhymes with tressles). Totally remember the Milky Bar Kid ad jingle ("Nestle's Milky Baaaaaaaaar"). But in maybe the early 90s it switched to NESTLAY.

Uh when you type Nestlé's it autocorrects to give it an accent. Wow.

Yep, that's exactly what happened. Even when they brought out the old ads again, they changed the pronounciation.

drash, Friday, 5 June 2015 09:50 (ten years ago)

We used to love it when we lived in Germany.

Maggi Wurst, as it used to be, we got forever told off for referring to things by their brand name. So, we would ask "Well, what is it then?" at which point we were allowed to call it Maggi for now.

When we got back to England, we found it was called "Seasoning". Which is a rubbish name for it.

Maggi it is.

I've had some on my shelf for a year now, and I only use it as an additive to the spicy egg noodles I make for son. I haven't really got into the habit of using it much for stuff I eat tbh, and I'm not totally sure how much it enhances the sauce. But I don't get any complaints.
