Have the Guts to Ask!

Occasionally, ppl will start posting about something and I won't have a clue what they're on about. This happened about a year ago with BLING BLING. I askes what BLING BLING was on a thread and was relieved to be given the answer!

So I can see how in-jokes, slang and experiences from past FAPs ect ect might be off-putting (esp to newbies) so I say:

If there is anything that's mystified you about ILx - ask it here!

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 4 October 2002 07:59 (twenty-three years ago)

...and some kindly soul will supply the answer (I hope).

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 4 October 2002 08:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not really ilx slang but Marcello, what does "ill-lit skip" mean? Does it mean "gloomy rubbish receptacle" or am I missing something?

Sam (chirombo), Friday, 4 October 2002 08:04 (twenty-three years ago)

i want to know what blog is. i gather it is a net site???
not very 'up' with net lingo here :-(

donna (donna), Friday, 4 October 2002 08:08 (twenty-three years ago)

cool, this would be a good time for me to ask just what do the following phrases in older hip hop mean?

1. lick shots (this has been asked before but there was a satisfactory answer)?

2. buck whylin'

3. cold lampin' (somethin sex related i suspect...?)

blueski, Friday, 4 October 2002 08:15 (twenty-three years ago)

er, that jerry the nipper stuff on the 'where do you all come from?' thread.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 4 October 2002 08:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Donna 'blog' is short for 'web log' and it is a kind of online diary where ppl tell us what they've been doing lately share their thoughts with everyone on everything under the sun. There are various sites you can go to in order to set up a blog. Popular ones include Diaryland and Blogspot.

Blogs don't have to be set up by individuals. Sometimes they're set up by groups with a common interest, eg one of my faves is Pumpkin Publog where ppl, some of them contributors to this board, review the pubs they visit and discuss pub related things like quizzes and the etiquette of buying rounds.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 4 October 2002 08:22 (twenty-three years ago)

my understanding:
to lick shots is to fire rounds from a gun
to be buck whylin is to be behaving wildly
cold lampin? i always thought it was like chilling out, but more towards maxin and having your game tight. but i dont know where i've heard the phrase

boxcubed (boxcubed), Friday, 4 October 2002 08:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Rubbish receptacles. Expression derived from Lewisham Council road sign: "DRIVERS: Beware of ill-lit skips" - much quoted on his radio show by Danny Baker, which is where I got it from.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 4 October 2002 08:45 (twenty-three years ago)

flava flav was big on cold lampin. i never found out what it was though. see also: cold lampin' cereal, which as everybody knows, you can't eat withot making a mess.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 4 October 2002 08:59 (twenty-three years ago)

"rim-shot" ???

Graham (graham), Friday, 4 October 2002 08:59 (twenty-three years ago)

g-kit, people col' lamp, not "cold". Just like you buckwhyle and don't "buckwild".

Lek Dukagjin, Friday, 4 October 2002 09:13 (twenty-three years ago)

"rim-shot" ???

Historically this meant hitting a snare drum in such a way that as well as the tip of the stick hitting the skin the middle of the stick would hit the metal rim of the drum. This gives the hit a distinctive hard sound as well as being somewhat louder. Before drums were mic'ed up drummers used to use rimshots to make themselves a little more audible. Listen to something like 'Tired of Waiting' by the Kinks - I think that has snare rolls on it using the technique. Oh and early Who or probably lots of beat stuff from that period.

But the meaning seems to have changed now so that it's interchangeable with 'side stick' - placing the drum stick horizontally across the snare drum and striking the rim alone (used on ballads/quiet verses, '70s reggae, and a lot of hip hop).

David (David), Friday, 4 October 2002 09:18 (twenty-three years ago)

everyone else said cold, why pick on me? and i distinctly remember a D on the cereal packet, so ner.

so anyways....

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 4 October 2002 09:22 (twenty-three years ago)

HEIN = French for EH?

Emma, Friday, 4 October 2002 09:28 (twenty-three years ago)

... and is sometimes pronounced 'hine'.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 4 October 2002 09:33 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s (mark s), Friday, 4 October 2002 09:36 (twenty-three years ago)

From the Rap Dictionary(!)
Lamp
1) (v) To hang out next to a streetlamp. "I'm on the street, cold lampin'" -- Public Enemy (Cold lampin' with Flavor).
2) (v) To relax while others panic.

Simeon (Simeon), Friday, 4 October 2002 09:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Not to be confused w/ "LAMP IT!"

Tom (Groke), Friday, 4 October 2002 09:59 (twenty-three years ago)

gazza, Friday, 4 October 2002 10:01 (twenty-three years ago)

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 4 October 2002 10:32 (twenty-three years ago)

So what does Rim-shot mean when someone randomly shouts it on a message board etc?

Graham (graham), Friday, 4 October 2002 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

it means they should wash their mouth out.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 4 October 2002 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

di smith (lucylurex), Friday, 4 October 2002 10:47 (twenty-three years ago)

rim - shot!

di smith (lucylurex), Friday, 4 October 2002 10:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Rim-shot is surely like a drum sound at the end of a bad gag.
Like "Take my wife, No please - take her [ba-dum-tshhhhh]"

Simeon (Simeon), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s (mark s), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael - as I understand it Jerry the Nipper was previously another well known poster on IL*. It would be bad form for me to say exactly who as they may have good reason for changing their ID.

Simeon (Simeon), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to know what board Mike Ro(bott) was reffering to when he said:
"think the devil, another word for tar, a utensil.... "
I've been thinking about it for days... I would ask on the thread it's in but I'm intellectually intimidated.

Simeon (Simeon), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:09 (twenty-three years ago)

What's the origin of "DOES ANYONE IN THIS BITCH [etc]"?

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

simeon, i think you're right. what i want to know is whether it's an 'in-joke' that i have no business knowing or whether it's a big giggle that i'm missing out on.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

DOES ANYONE IN THIS BITCH LIKE ICP

Graham (graham), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

haha korrekt and you beat me to it, but when did it become BEEYOTCH?

mark s (mark s), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

The secret origins of injokes!

Where was 12ft lizards from? David Icke?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

No, they are real.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes but where are you *from*?

Tim (Tim), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

After the online berrating I got, after making some casual (and I thought intensely amusing) remarks I made about the London Indie Scene being run by a secret elite conspiracy, and Steven Drew and Sean Price both being 12 foot lizards from outer space, I better watch what I say.

I have never considered any members of the London dronerock scene in any way shape or form involving "jazz-solo-ing" (OK, jazz cigarettes, maybe, but jazz solo-ing, no) and I love my boyfriend very much, and I am a nice girl and never go to peepshows, indeed.

mark s (mark s), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I presumed you'd all read that Jon Ronson book, when I started that thread about my annoying Chomsky class in April or May I think you began mentioning it.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

by you I mean mark s, and began regularly mentioning it.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't read books ronan i only watch TV and then argue with Momus viz:

"Race" and "class" are big fuck-off concepts which everyone believes they'll be CAUGHT OUT on: make the wrong assertion and HA! So you're a nazi!! (viz. David Icke with his Lizard-People-Rule-the-World theory being picketed by straight-faced anti-racist activists). The step from "race" (= bogus 19th century science) to , er, "Ethno-Cultural Identity" (or any term-shift by which you CAN generalise about, say, the diffs between Germans and Austrians) evades the problem w/o removing it, of course: cuz it either hardwires Absolute Cultural Relativism or somewhere sneaks racism-in-sheep's-clothing back thru some other door.

-- mark s (mark@evazev.demon.co.uk), May 8th, 2001.

haha "Absolute Cultural Relativism" => *sarcasm device explodes*

mark s (mark s), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:50 (twenty-three years ago)

free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Thursday, 20 August 2009 04:35 (sixteen years ago)

it was created by some (apparently) teenage crepe (dante) to crepe onto another alleged slightly younger female teenager (aja) on the board. they were rumbled when aja's father happened across the board. then esteban buttez discovered it and the rest is history. former ilx bigwig andrew nf thought it would be hilarious to make the board pink and every dividing line into the aquaplaning penguin. both features of the board would come to be loved by all. it got deleted at some point but i don't remember why.

As near as I can make out, "hen fap" is just a piece of meaningless jargon, concocted so its user may appear to be in the know, while secretly snickering at anyone who plays along and pretends it means something.

Annoyingly enough, there is an outdated use of "hen" as a modifier that denotes a women-only affair, similar to "stag" for men, so that a "hen fap" would simply be a gathering of ILX women who Fancy A Pint together. But those who use "hen fap" do not appear familiar with this usage.

Aimless, Thursday, 20 August 2009 23:04 (sixteen years ago)
