iirc i had to do a job centre thing once and that might have asked about drugs but frankly when it's the job centre it doesn't even feel like lying

I was asked about drug use when I applied to work at a porno store. Still didn't get the job.

how's life, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 11:00 (eleven years ago)

You hadn't taken enough drugs?

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 11:03 (eleven years ago)

this never happened to me. do they usually ask if you currently use drugs or if you have ever used drugs? the former almost makes sense for certain kinds of jobs, but it's still invasive. the latter is just...

I have worked for various companies on schools over the years and the local authority always demand enhanced criminal record background checks before you set foot in a school. Even cautions show up on enhanced checks so I used to get a bit worried, but every time there were worse people than me. One guy had done time for intent to supply and had a Europe wide banning order from all football grounds but he was cool to rewire a school!

Done drugs, never been asked, would almost certainly lie if I was.

I've never been asked about drug use during a job interview, but for my current and previous contractor positions I had to submit to drug testing.

i need a "never had a job interview" option

I just realized the question wasn't specifically about drugs. It was whether I had ever been arrested. Which I had. For drugs.

how's life, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:42 (eleven years ago)

Im an american and have been on plenty of job interviews and ive never been asked this. ive had pre employment drug screenings (piss tests) though. Tough to lie on those

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 17:50 (eleven years ago)

I was ON drugs during a job interview! I'd indulged before a Butthole Surfers show the previous night and had no clue I'd still be disoriented all the next day. Interview went poorly, but I pre-emptively apologized and claimed I had the flu, and they were immediately desperate enough to hire me. So I guess "done drugs but lied by ommission" is most appropriate, even though I wasn't asked about any habits. I'm still with that company.

I interviewed for my first job in high school after a couple of glasses of wine at a friends house.

I certainly didn't tell anyone I was drunk, but amazingly I wasn't asked either.

Never been asked this, I don't think it's common in here... (It might be illegal to ask the question, actually.) One job asked me to provide proof that I don't have criminal record, but that was because the job involved handling debit and Visa cards.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 09:54 (eleven years ago)

have had computerised tests over here. more about workplace behaviour than drugs. it was a bit scary but i could see how it might give them a picture of how a person is, it was quite well-designed and challenging, like you would have three statements and have to pick two, one for "most like me" and "least like me". after a while it starts giving you three ostensibly bad statements, like "i distrust people", "i am always right", "i burn small animals" and you have to try to be honest. i suspect a lot of it was about consistency and it showing how well you know yourself.

I don't think I've ever been asked this question. I've only been drug tested once and that was a few years ago for a teaching job at a community college. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that asking whether someone had done drugs is a standard interview question for certain types of jobs (retail, fast food) but by the time drug tests and drug-related questions became prevalent, I was focused on professional jobs where people didn't ask such things. I have had to take the MMPI or whatever it's called, which I think is a ridiculous farce in a hiring context (okay in general, too).

A couple of my friends were shocked I'd never had to take an employment-related drug test prior to this teaching job, but it was for the same reason. I was applying for those kinds of jobs before drug testing became widespread. Although I did decline to complete the application process at Home Depot once because of a drug screen since I knew I'd never pass it.

Anyway, if I were asked this question now, I would either say no, not recently, or something like "Well, college was a long time ago!" depending on how the interview was going.
