funny enough

should be a "WAS funny" option, or a "occasionally funny".

sometimes now when whole laugh free episodes go by i still enjoy it more than other cartoon sitcoms and definitely more than that early bullshit

nemo me chimpune lacessit (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 October 2013 20:47 (twelve years ago)

xpost he started coming out of that by Season 3 tho

your face comes with coleslaw (Neanderthal), Thursday, 24 October 2013 20:47 (twelve years ago)

i wasn't sure. ok i'll give Season 3 a pass. i never have any idea what's what tbh except that Stewie started out as a terrible idea and became a brilliant idea

nemo me chimpune lacessit (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 October 2013 20:48 (twelve years ago)

I think the majority of the characters have always been shit (Brian is an exception). The throwaway jokes were generally much wittier at the beginning. Or maybe they just seemed fresher? Haven't actually watched the early ones for maybe ten years.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 24 October 2013 20:49 (twelve years ago)

Brian is a terrible character which kinda makes him a great character

nemo me chimpune lacessit (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 October 2013 20:51 (twelve years ago)

wow sounds like enough to sustain a show, will def invest my time in that

this terrible show can go straight to hell

adam, Thursday, 24 October 2013 20:53 (twelve years ago)

i don't know if Brian is more than one note but i think the way he veers between mouthpiece for Macfarlane's douchebag weltanschauung and bitter self-satire of Macfarlane's douchebag weltanschauung is interesting, plus he is half of the perfect double act

nemo me chimpune lacessit (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 October 2013 20:53 (twelve years ago)

xxpost cuz it's never a Family Guy thread without CONDESCENSION!

Has there been a Family Guy vs South Park poll?

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 24 October 2013 20:54 (twelve years ago)

i was gonna post a T/S - FG's guilty, hypocritical bigotry vs SP's gleeful, obnoxious bigotry

nemo me chimpune lacessit (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 October 2013 20:54 (twelve years ago)

"guilty" isn't right maybe - "winking" wd be the better word. people who know who Jimmy Carr is will understand the kind of offensive bullshit i'm talking about.

nemo me chimpune lacessit (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 October 2013 20:55 (twelve years ago)

scratch Jimmy Carr. Ricky Gervais.

nemo me chimpune lacessit (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 October 2013 20:56 (twelve years ago)

who appears in one of the worst fucking episodes of this, just to keep up his track record of shitting up passably amusing cartoons

nemo me chimpune lacessit (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 October 2013 20:56 (twelve years ago)

??? family guy's virulent racism seems p sincerely held tbh, south park are "trolling liberals" when they do it (I know I know)

Jesus (wins), Thursday, 24 October 2013 20:57 (twelve years ago)

nah, South Park dudes are libertarian douchers, Family Guy know they shouldn't but "it's meta so it's ok" is how i break it down largely

nemo me chimpune lacessit (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 October 2013 20:59 (twelve years ago)

NV otm, it's pretty clear once you start reading interviews

a dessicated quasi-tsunami of gut-busting cosmic - tech (DJP), Thursday, 24 October 2013 21:00 (twelve years ago)

why on earth would I do that

Jesus (wins), Thursday, 24 October 2013 21:01 (twelve years ago)

Matt and Trey have bendable politics imo. That's neither a positive nor a negative. SP has a whole universe of good characters and not...two, like Family Guy.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 October 2013 21:02 (twelve years ago)

oh no I think "libertarian douchers" is spot on

Jesus (wins), Thursday, 24 October 2013 21:03 (twelve years ago)

i can enjoy lots of South Park despite finding big chunks of its politics despicable, same as i can enjoy lots of Family Guy despite thinking its creators are mostly v cynical and stupid

nemo me chimpune lacessit (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 October 2013 21:04 (twelve years ago)

McFarlane's real life politics sound way less suspect than Stone and Parker's, but SP is capable of greatness that FG cannot begin to aspire to.

this is how a punch sounds, like ditch, like quitch (soref), Thursday, 24 October 2013 23:54 (twelve years ago)

i kind of file Family Guy with Adam Sandler movies as one of those things that would be a perfectly defensible footnote to comedy history if it was popular for a couple years and then forgotten, but as a ubiquitous decades-spanning cottage industry it's just repulsive and insufferable.

increasingly desperate demand for high (Noodle Vague), Friday, 25 October 2013 13:46 (twelve years ago)

Isn't Stewie still like that? Or have I not been paying attention?

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Friday, 25 October 2013 13:53 (twelve years ago)

agree first 2-3 seasons had fresher ideas, now it's just going through motions by being self referential 90% of the time to hold fans attention.

Evan, Friday, 25 October 2013 14:45 (twelve years ago)

i've seen episodes of both, but theyre both pretty annoying. SP more so for the inane analyses and libertarian douchery, not to mention those kids' horrible horrible voices . sometimes i can barely listen to it for more than 5 minutes.

while i have no doubt that he's an insufferable ass, i think mcfarlane's actually a p talented voice actor with decent comic timing. he just needs better writers. it's not like he can't afford them. so fuck him.

|citation needed| (will), Friday, 25 October 2013 14:45 (twelve years ago)

i've seen FUNNY episodes of both

|citation needed| (will), Friday, 25 October 2013 14:46 (twelve years ago)

That's the thing, he doesn't need better writers at all. Plenty of success sticking to the self referencing and recycled secondary characters to spark more merchandising opportunities.

Evan, Friday, 25 October 2013 14:53 (twelve years ago)

Isn't Stewie still like that? Or have I not been paying attention?

Stewie hasn't really been like that for 6-7 years

can't believe the creator of a long-running cartoon sitcom is milking it for easy money

increasingly desperate demand for high (Noodle Vague), Friday, 25 October 2013 14:56 (twelve years ago)

i don't watch a whole lot of family guy but i'm not gonna front like it's not funny

Tip from Tae Kwon Do: (crüt), Friday, 25 October 2013 14:57 (twelve years ago)

i've definitely laughed at the show but the hit-to-miss ratio is on par with something like Two and a Half Men. I think the trope of "what if we took *70's movie or sitcom reference* and put polite, shy people in that situation instead?" is really well worn by now

frogbs, Friday, 25 October 2013 15:09 (twelve years ago)

Awkward

Jesus (wins), Friday, 25 October 2013 15:22 (twelve years ago)

I hate 2 half men but chuck Lorre at least gives off the impression that he enjoys what he does. Parker stone and McFarland all sound like they're ready to quit if only someone would stop leaving dump trucks of money on their yards

Philip Nunez, Friday, 25 October 2013 15:23 (twelve years ago)

Nah Parker/Stone are still pretty into it I reckon.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Friday, 25 October 2013 15:24 (twelve years ago)

This is insane, the musical bits are the most consistently shit & unfunny parts of the entire show!

Jesus (wins), Friday, 25 October 2013 15:25 (twelve years ago)

i approve of family guys internet-era nihilism in theory but i wld never actually watch it

Lamp, Friday, 25 October 2013 15:30 (twelve years ago)

xp no way some of the songs are really well done and not intended to be hysterically funny

if Macfarlane's got 1 surly teenager to listen to show tunes with fresh ears then that justifies FG imo

increasingly desperate demand for high (Noodle Vague), Friday, 25 October 2013 15:33 (twelve years ago)

i think even if any of them did go ahead and quit right now the dumptrucks of money would probably forge on bravely still. so there's got to be more to it.

sleepingbag, Friday, 25 October 2013 15:33 (twelve years ago)

the difference is that Parker & Stone have done some really great movies and their musical was excellent. I think a lot of the shoddiness of SP can be attributed to the fact that they really only get about a week to work on each episode from start to finish. MacFarlane's done all sorts of stuff on the side and none of it's ever any good.

frogbs, Friday, 25 October 2013 15:35 (twelve years ago)

a lot of the shoddiness of SP can be attributed to Parker and Stone being douchebags

increasingly desperate demand for high (Noodle Vague), Friday, 25 October 2013 15:36 (twelve years ago)

agreed Macfarlane shd stick to singing and acting other people's material tho

increasingly desperate demand for high (Noodle Vague), Friday, 25 October 2013 15:37 (twelve years ago)

I love showtunes, I do not love showtune pastiches featuring the mellifluous tones of peter griffin creating a 5-minute lol vacuum in the middle of an already weak sitcom ymmv

Jesus (wins), Friday, 25 October 2013 15:49 (twelve years ago)

while i have no doubt that he's an insufferable ass, i think mcfarlane's actually a p talented voice actor with decent comic timing. he just needs better writers. it's not like he can't afford them. so fuck him.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel. Funniest thing about the show has always been his voices, and its most effective employment is the Brian-Stewie interaction. Second-funniest thing is the random cutaways, and those grow more hit-and-miss all the time. 74th-'funniest' thing about the show: the creepy/rapey and "ironic racism" jokes.

"American Dad" still better.

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Friday, 25 October 2013 16:24 (twelve years ago)

I dunno if american dad's racism being less ironic makes it funnier

Philip Nunez, Friday, 25 October 2013 16:26 (twelve years ago)

I tend to think that most hateful jokes in Family Guy are also the least funny, but I worry I'm just more willing to convince myself that something I find funny isn't hateful.

― this is how a punch sounds, like ditch, like quitch (soref)

id say for most ilxors the opposite is more likely true tbh

drugs/lies: poll (darraghmac), Friday, 25 October 2013 16:27 (twelve years ago)

Funniest thing about the show has always been his voices...

My take on this is exactly the opposite. Voices on this show are like fingernails on chalkboard to me.

Thomas K Amphong (Tom D.), Friday, 25 October 2013 16:51 (twelve years ago)

I dunno if american dad's racism being less ironic makes it funnier

Not funnier, no...I guess I just find it easier to overlook if I'm enjoying the whole more.

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Friday, 25 October 2013 17:03 (twelve years ago)

yeah I don't really like the FG voices either, the real nasally voices that a lot of the family has is grating as hell, and MacFarlane has like half the range he seems to think he does.

frogbs, Friday, 25 October 2013 17:10 (twelve years ago)

Paul lynde alien and Patrick Stewart are the only voices that sound like they're having a good time. Everyone else sounds like "I just need to finish this up so I can go home to my money dump truck"

Philip Nunez, Friday, 25 October 2013 17:13 (twelve years ago)

See, I don't get that impression - to me MacFarlane sounds like he puts a real effort into his delivery. (Stan Smith's chest voice is apparently very physically tiring.) But whatever, ymmv.

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Friday, 25 October 2013 18:37 (twelve years ago)
