I think the majority of the characters have always been shit (Brian is an exception). The throwaway jokes were generally much wittier at the beginning. Or maybe they just seemed fresher? Haven't actually watched the early ones for maybe ten years.

McFarlane's real life politics sound way less suspect than Stone and Parker's, but SP is capable of greatness that FG cannot begin to aspire to.

I think ilx is the only place where I've come across large numbers of people who dislike it.

i kind of file Family Guy with Adam Sandler movies as one of those things that would be a perfectly defensible footnote to comedy history if it was popular for a couple years and then forgotten, but as a ubiquitous decades-spanning cottage industry it's just repulsive and insufferable.

agree first 2-3 seasons had fresher ideas, now it's just going through motions by being self referential 90% of the time to hold fans attention.

i've seen episodes of both, but theyre both pretty annoying. SP more so for the inane analyses and libertarian douchery, not to mention those kids' horrible horrible voices . sometimes i can barely listen to it for more than 5 minutes.

while i have no doubt that he's an insufferable ass, i think mcfarlane's actually a p talented voice actor with decent comic timing. he just needs better writers. it's not like he can't afford them. so fuck him.

That's the thing, he doesn't need better writers at all. Plenty of success sticking to the self referencing and recycled secondary characters to spark more merchandising opportunities.

i've definitely laughed at the show but the hit-to-miss ratio is on par with something like Two and a Half Men. I think the trope of "what if we took *70's movie or sitcom reference* and put polite, shy people in that situation instead?" is really well worn by now

i think even if any of them did go ahead and quit right now the dumptrucks of money would probably forge on bravely still. so there's got to be more to it.

the difference is that Parker & Stone have done some really great movies and their musical was excellent. I think a lot of the shoddiness of SP can be attributed to the fact that they really only get about a week to work on each episode from start to finish. MacFarlane's done all sorts of stuff on the side and none of it's ever any good.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel. Funniest thing about the show has always been his voices, and its most effective employment is the Brian-Stewie interaction. Second-funniest thing is the random cutaways, and those grow more hit-and-miss all the time. 74th-'funniest' thing about the show: the creepy/rapey and "ironic racism" jokes.

I tend to think that most hateful jokes in Family Guy are also the least funny, but I worry I'm just more willing to convince myself that something I find funny isn't hateful.

yeah I don't really like the FG voices either, the real nasally voices that a lot of the family has is grating as hell, and MacFarlane has like half the range he seems to think he does.

Paul lynde alien and Patrick Stewart are the only voices that sound like they're having a good time. Everyone else sounds like "I just need to finish this up so I can go home to my money dump truck"

See, I don't get that impression - to me MacFarlane sounds like he puts a real effort into his delivery. (Stan Smith's chest voice is apparently very physically tiring.) But whatever, ymmv.
