UH, THE MOVIE OR THE PLANET? The Simpsons Season 7 Poll (That Lasts Less Than Nine Decades)

NOTE: Re-doing this poll since I had chosen an end date 90 years in the future. If you've voted, re-vote now!!

http://www.worldsgreatestcritic.com/mcclureandpiggy.jpg

I have a feeling there's going to be a lot more consensus, or a lot less, this season. One or the other. This is when a lot of people think the show started getting "bad." But not me, I love Krusty I think it was still very much at its peak here, and the weak spots are both few and far between, and much better than most other shows on the air at the time. I already know what I'm voting for -- although it's hard not to vote for "Bart Sells His Soul" or the eternally awesome "Lisa the Vegetarian," I have to vote for "A Fish Called Selma," almost unquestionably Phil Hartman's crowning moment of glory for the show, and one of the rare successful episodes in which the family is almost entirely on the periphery for the whole thing.

Anyway, don't let the lousy Smarch weather get you down, and don't forget to vote this time!

(Best quote from this season that has worked it's way into IRL: Anytime someone tells me I have a phone call, my instinctive response is, "Is it about my cube?")

"Real Acid?!"

mizzell, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 17:06 (eleven years ago)

What are people's opinions on the flying hellfish episode? I really love it, but wonder if others don't find it cheesy, given the sort of adventure narrative.

Yeah, I pretty much hate that aspect of it (probably would've liked it at age 9, like you did.) The whole tone is more like, I dunno, Duck Tales or something. But the scene with Abe speaking to Bart's class is all-time.

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 17:31 (eleven years ago)

Even the non-celebs are badly handled. I saw a season 19 episode the other day with Alan Moore, Daniel Clowes and Art Spiegelman and it was excruciating.

Hey, I saw this bit, and it was... uh, well, it wasn't the utter pits, just, you know, mildly excruciating.

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 17:47 (eleven years ago)

But the scene with Abe speaking to Bart's class is all-time.

Haha, yes. "We had to say 'dickety' because the Kaiser had stolen our word 'twenty.'"

Ian from Etobicoke (Phil D.), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 17:53 (eleven years ago)

Hated Flying Hellfish for the sentiment, there are some cracking lines in it still.

Voting Radioactive Man.

emil.y, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 19:25 (eleven years ago)

"congratulations bart simpson, YOU'RE OUR NEW FALLOUT BOY! ... is what i would be saying to you if you weren't an inch too short. next!"

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 19:34 (eleven years ago)

not big on the hellfish episode either, or the sideshow bob one, but there's so much great stuff here. think i'll probably go with 'bart sells his soul,' which is kind of genuinely eerie and touching.

'summer of 4 ft. 2' seems like a good, satisfying end to the 'classic' simpsons era.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 19:40 (eleven years ago)

Donald Sutherland's part in Lisa the Iconoclast quite possibly my favorite Simpsons guest role. Every line is absolute gold.

"Mr. Simpson, I have nothing but respect for the office of town crier, but this is outside your jurisdiction!"
"You are banned from this historical society! You, and your children, and your children's children! For three months!"

Plus the great sign gag:

http://images.wikia.com/simpsons/images/1/10/Springfield_historical_society.png

Jeff Goldblum is also great in A Fish Called Selma, and he's funny on the DVD commentary as well.

Ian from Etobicoke (Phil D.), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 19:40 (eleven years ago)

Lisa The Iconoclast isn't one of my favorites, but I do say "You suck-diddly-uck!" pretty much daily.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 19:47 (eleven years ago)

"I wonder if this Homer Nixon is any relation?"
voting Scenes From the Class Struggle. don't expect anyone else to though

cerealbar, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 19:55 (eleven years ago)

"Scenes" is my favorite "Marge has had enough of Lisa's crap" episode, though.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__HlEfSylNuA/RxsUpw876iI/AAAAAAAAAME/bQyrEahEox4/s320/mamamama.jpg

Ian from Etobicoke (Phil D.), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 19:59 (eleven years ago)

That scene also highlights some of the differences between early and late Simpsons - Lisa's crap is the crap of an annoying little kid. In later years her portrayal seems to be some kind of malevolent 'straw feminist' type.

emil.y, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 20:05 (eleven years ago)

That's one of my favourite Margecentric episodes! I liked the Dorothy Parker-inspired character who has a different drink in every scene she appears in.

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 20:48 (eleven years ago)

yeah that's a fun episode. The name 'Sorny' has had a big influence on my life.

'Homerpalooza' is a bit of a dud but that aside I think the drop in quality here compared to previous seasons is miniscule. Tonally a lot of it seems a kind of swing back to season 4 - many episodes with quite simple premises that they manage to wring a lot out of. Though the way those contrast with the crazier things make it even harder to choose between episodes here.

Merdeyeux, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 21:01 (eleven years ago)

I hope we can all agree that, whichever episode wins, this is the greatest two and a half minutes in the entire season:

"hey funboys! Get a room!"

taxi tomato or bag tomato (Trayce), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 01:52 (eleven years ago)

I would have loved Homerpalooza if I was 15 when it came out because I woulda been all SQUEEEEEEE OMG ITS SONIC YOUTH AS A CARTOOOOOON.

...its still kinda bemusing anyway.

My immediate instinct answer was "Radioactive Man", if only because it has spawned one of the whole internet's most enuring and useful catchphrases in "my eyes! ze goggles do nothink!".

taxi tomato or bag tomato (Trayce), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 01:54 (eleven years ago)

Maintenance Engineer of Foolhardiness (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 02:19 (eleven years ago)

"Mother Simpson"
"Sideshow Bob's Last Gleaming"
"Two Bad Neighbors"
"Lisa the Iconoclast"
"Homer the Smithers"
"Raging Abe Simpson"
"Summer of 4 Ft. 2"

^^^ I need to rewatch this season to see if these episodes are as terrible as I remember.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 02:23 (eleven years ago)

at least two of those rank among the best ever imo

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 02:27 (eleven years ago)

burns answering the phone in 'homer the smithers' is all-time:

'ahoy hoy? no, you have the wrong number, my friend. i suspect you need more practice working your telephone machine.'

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 02:29 (eleven years ago)

My favorite part of that episode is Mr. Burns trying to break up Homer and Smithers' fight by splashing water on them, popping a paper bag, and trying to separate them with a ruler. Also, Smithers pausing between whacks on Homer's head with the phone receiver saying "It's for you!"

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 03:45 (eleven years ago)

I like "curse of the flying hellfish"! (for the german "must get back in time to lizen to kraftverk/hey funboys get a room!" thing aforementioned, if nothing else).

2 bad neighbours is a bit crap. Rather flat Dennis the Menace pastiche. Was last gleaming the "bob steals a bomb" one? That wasnt that bad.

Summer of 4 ft 2 was great! "like, you know... whatever"

taxi tomato or bag tomato (Trayce), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 03:46 (eleven years ago)

"Mother Simpson" gets maybe a tad overrated owing to the power of its last image, but terrible? GTFO.

midnight outdoor nude frolic up north goes south (Eric H.), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 03:47 (eleven years ago)

Last image? Oh, homer sitting on the car bonnet yeah.

taxi tomato or bag tomato (Trayce), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 03:53 (eleven years ago)

Christ, I know way too much about this show without having to look it up.

taxi tomato or bag tomato (Trayce), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 03:54 (eleven years ago)

I don't think you need to worry about that on this thread ILX.

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 04:51 (eleven years ago)

This is the point at which I stopped watching regularly - didn't see a lot of them the first time (or ever) and ''Summer of 4 Ft. 2'' is the last one I remember watching as a new thing. Must have also been dialing back on the reruns, because even the ones I did see are really hazy and unfamiliar. Dunno if it was the show or me. This was the year I started 8th grade at a new school, maybe things were different....dunno. I'd love to be pleasantly surprised, though.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 05:00 (eleven years ago)

Ep ranks up there with Lemon of Troy in line-for-line greatness

musically, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 17:13 (eleven years ago)

'Mother Simpson' is remembered for the emotional punch but there are so many great lines and bits surrounding that - the entirety of Homer's faked death, "LEAVES OF GRASS MY ASS", the APB on Uosdwis R. Dewoh, etc etc etc.

Merdeyeux, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 17:20 (eleven years ago)

Don't worry, Marge. Her idea of wit is nothing more than an incisive observation humorously phrased and delivered with impeccable timing.

gyac, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 22:02 (eleven years ago)

Doris Grau, script supervisor for the show and voice of Lunchlady Doris died on December 30, 1995. The episode "Team Homer", which aired eight days later, was one of the last episodes to feature her voice and featured a dedication to her.[9] After that, Lunchlady Doris had speaking parts in "Lisa's Sax", which Grau had recorded before her death.

How did I never know this!??

taxi tomato or bag tomato (Trayce), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 22:39 (eleven years ago)

Oh god this is a season I love *so many* episodes from.

"He came to life! ....good for him!"
The "just dont look" jingle, which always reminds me of Jinglesmith :D

All of Troy McClures bits in that show, tbh

I only recently realized how much recycling was going in the Treehouse of Horror lines:
1. "Dad You Shot the Zombie Flanders" "He was a Zombie" 2. "We have the kill the boy" "How do you know he's a vampire?" "He's a vampire!?" and 3. "uhh chief, that wasn't a monster it was the captain of the high school basketball team" "well, he was turning into a monster"

the Bronski Review (Trayce), Monday, 2 December 2013 01:05 (eleven years ago)

as an actual 9-year-old boy at this point in the series' run, "Bart Sells His Soul" was the episode that connected with me the most—altho "Radioactive Man" came close, it loses points for being waaaayyy too disillusioning

omg wait I forgot which one "Lisa the Iconoclast" was! could've easily voted for that on the right day. for some reason ('history' theme?) I remembered it being earlier than S.7...

confused subconscious U2 association (bernard snowy), Monday, 2 December 2013 15:17 (eleven years ago)

For me the best things about "Lisa the Iconoclast" are:

a) Donald Sutherland
b) the educational film about Jebediah
c) "'I want to help you, George Washington?' Even in your dreams you're a nerd."
d) Homer's tenure as town crier. (Encouraged by Bart's, "You're a big, fat loudmouth and you can walk if you have to.")

Ian from Etobicoke (Phil D.), Monday, 2 December 2013 15:28 (eleven years ago)

huh, I think 'Bart on the Road' is good but I'm not really sure what elevates it above other solid classic-period Simpsons episodes. Those bottom two 0s, ILX you disappoint me terribly.
