Read Emma. Watched Clueless. Enjoyed both. They never really seemed to me to have anything in common, but then neither did Homer's Odyssey and Joyce's Ulysses, in spite of all claims to the contrary.

That would boil down to "writing fiction" compared to "acting a role". A film is almost never reducable to the work of a single person and a novel almost invariably is. The debate would be more Austen vs. Silverstone & the writer(s), director, editor(s), actors, set designers, costume designers, makeup artists, music director, etc.

yes, Austen vs. Silverstone is glib, and misrepresentative (it's really Austen vs. Heckerling), but I was just trying to generate interest (unsuccessfully, it appears).
