hoffman should've gotten the oscar for tootsie but if they had given it to o'toole it would easily be one of the more deserving, fun career achievement oscars

kind of expected this dude to live to 100
the last decade he's managed to look both decrepit and vivacious, figured he could pull that off another 20 years
RIP

I woulda given him the Oscar for The Stunt Man. When I saw it in the nineties the way power steeled the androgyny was something I hadn't seen before.

Was discussing this today with a friend, he swears blind that there is an 80s remake of Lawrence of Arabia starring John Hurt and Tim Roth. Claims to have seen it. He's totally imagining things right?

Gutted.
O'Toole will be remembered for Arabia hundreds of years from now. I can barely imagine the burden of living 50 years past my signal achievement.

For some reason I always think of him and Julie Andrews being in the same boat, these classically trained English actors tied forever to their early iconic roles despite pretty diverse careers.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 16 December 2013 14:53 (twelve years ago)
Hmmmmm, somehow I have never thought of Peter O'Toole and Julie Andrews as being in the same boat... O'Toole would be in the bar for a start

I have never thought of Peter O'Toole and Julie Andrews as being in the same boat...
I have, bcz I saw him play Henry Higgins on Broadway in Pygmalion (opposite Amanda Plummer as Eliza), 1987. I wonder if the My Fair Lady movie wd've worked with him and Julie...
Even after allegedly quitting the sauce, his Higgins sounded like a lush; you can imagine how his final "She's gowing to marry Freddy HAWHAHAWHAW" came off.

Was he in anything of note other than Lawrence of Arabia, which I regard as thrash.
From the filmography it doesn't look like it..

Having watched LOA, you might try loud O'Toole now.

Just go through and watch everything he was nominated for. The Casanova TV miniseries is lots of fun. BTW of the nominated films, nothing says DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY CHRISTMAS like The Lion In Winter.
― hatcat marnell (suzy), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 15:08 (eleven years ago)
Lion in Winter is just too damned 20th-century family dramedy for my taste.
Lord Jim strains like hell to imitate LoA (to repeat myself from the main thread, goddammit). Also this is the first time I've read anything good about Night of the Generals.
― eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 15:36 (eleven years ago)
The best thing about Lord Jim is the on-set still photography. Had the relevant LIFE magazine cover on my wall, bored rigid by the film.
― hatcat marnell (suzy), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 16:40 (eleven years ago)
the cast alone for Night of the Generals is enough reason to enjoy it

Speaking of which, O'Toole is in 'Casino Royale' (1967) for about 10 seconds.

If only we as the audience could have as much fun watching that movie as the cast clearly had filming it.
