This is it - the last of the so-called "canonical" seasons that I'll poll before the roundup poll of the winners to determine the Best. Episode. Ever. By this point, things had gotten pretty dire - there's only maybe three episodes I can even conceive of voting for here: "Homer to the Max," (Max Power jokes always good for a laugh); "Bart the Mother" (the final appearance of Troy McLure, and a good one, too); or the silly "Simpsons Bible Stories," which somehow makes me laugh. (Particularly a certain Bart/Ralph exchange.) Maybe also "Mayored to the Mob" because Star Wars.

Let the competition (such as it is) begin!

At first glance Viva Ned Flanders is the only one I think is properly consistently good.

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 23 December 2013 18:31 (eleven years ago)

oh wait that was season 9. yeah this crap is horrible.

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 23 December 2013 18:33 (eleven years ago)

Troy McLure

Troy McCLURE, stupid!

(strange, you shouldn't have been able to hear that)

Definitely going with "Lisa Gets An A," mainly for the Pinchy subplot.

voted for 'Kidney Trouble', mainly due to the ship of lost souls bit

everyone should rewatch 'lisa gets an a,' which is the very last GREAT episode. well, not great like LISA NEEDS BRACES great, but definitely would pass muster as a decent season 7 episode. feels like the very last story they needed to tell, and it was all self-aware crap and stupid celebrity appearances from here on out.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 23 December 2013 19:28 (eleven years ago)

"Wild Barts Can't Be Broken" for the "Kids" sing-off. Or "Mom and Pop Art" for Isabella Rossellini.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Monday, 23 December 2013 19:28 (eleven years ago)

"Monty Can't Buy Me Love" probably the season's worst, iirc.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Monday, 23 December 2013 19:29 (eleven years ago)

"Simpsons Bible Stories"
"Mom and Pop Art"
"Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo"

All quality.

also have a sneaking affection for the 'homer wants to be like thomas edison' episode, and at least some of 'simpsons bible stories' is good. btw do not rewatch season 11 unless you want to cry, i sat through it earlier this year after rewatching seasons 9 and 10 and thinking 'eh, these aren't as bad as i thought at the time, some good jokes here and there,' but season 11 is just pure crap from beginning to end, scarcely a single redeemable moment.

"The pie shall be cut in two. And each man shall receive... death."

Vinnie, Monday, 23 December 2013 19:37 (eleven years ago)

But "Desperately Xeeking Xena" has many redeeming moments!

for some reason the halloween episodes stayed fresh longer than the other episodes -- i've seen ones even later than season 12 that were funny.

This is OTM. I'd pick this for the only episode this season -- or the next nine or ten seasons -- that could stand proudly next to the oil and salt of its departed brothers from seasons 3-7.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 23 December 2013 20:16 (eleven years ago)

The grease business b-story is kind of one of my favorites, but the main plot is pretty bad. Anyway:

Homer: Umm... we're.. foreign exchange students from... Scotland.
Willie: I'm from Scotland! Where do ya hail from?
Homer: Uh, North... Kilt-town.
Willie: No foolin'? I'm from North Kilttown! Do ya know Angus McLeod?
Homer: Wait a minute! There's no Angus McLeod in North Kilttown! You're not from Scotland at all!

DonkeyTeeth, Monday, 23 December 2013 23:11 (eleven years ago)

season 11 is just pure crap from beginning to end, scarcely a single redeemable moment.

Looking through the episode list - Beyond Blunderdome, Brother's Little Helper, Pygmoelian and Behind the Laughter all have their moments iirc.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

easiest choice of any of these polls, 'Lisa Gets an "A"'. By far the best A-story and by far the best B-story. Though despite what my adult judgment tells me I do have residual affection for a lot of these and certainly there are still quite a lot of entries in my everyday Simpsons reference database to be found here, which I think are close to 100% gone by the next season.

Merdeyeux, Saturday, 28 December 2013 01:01 (eleven years ago)

at this point in my life I should probably be able to hear references to Brown University without thinking "not Brown... Brown... Brown...", but nop.

Merdeyeux, Saturday, 28 December 2013 01:04 (eleven years ago)

I like a few of these, but this looks like the first season where the show could no longer sustain a consistent plot for three acts. Even my fave here--"Homer To The Max"--kinda goes off the rails in its final third.

Every time i watch "wizard of evergreen terrace" i start humming "the edison museum" by TMBG all day long.

the Bronski Review (Trayce), Saturday, 28 December 2013 01:39 (eleven years ago)

Igotta go for the Tokyo ep tho. Its loaded with wasabi.

"HOWDY GANGSTAS."

Also the ep has my fave cheesy Snake dad joke! "Yoink-dot-adios-backslash-losers!"

Haha what I was just about to vote in this

乒乓, Sunday, 29 December 2013 00:52 (eleven years ago)

Lisa Gets an A, Bart the Mother, Thirty Minutes over Tokyo

乒乓, Sunday, 29 December 2013 00:57 (eleven years ago)

Lisa Get an A was great all the way up to that bullshit "now here's the REAL comptroller" ending

sktsh, Sunday, 29 December 2013 01:53 (eleven years ago)

agreed, but the subplot's ending with homer and the fate of pinchy makes up for it.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Sunday, 29 December 2013 21:36 (eleven years ago)

btw Phil, you missed a trick titling this one "the Internet? Is that thing still around!?"
