Hi, I'm Troy McClure! You may remember me from such polls as "Best 90s Britpop CD-single B-side Lasting Between 2:25 and 3:19" and "Deadliest Vaccine Ever!" We've spent the last several months finding out what grown men and women think are the best episodes from 10 years worth of a television cartoon show, and now it's time to wrap it up with a poll of the winners. They're all listed below in chronological order. It's probably the baseball thingie or the Frank Grimes one, but feel free to vote for anything at all. And tune in for our upcoming one-question poll, "Ian Maxtone-Graham: Hitler, or Mega-Hitler?"

My gut is telling me Marge vs. the Monorail, but Homer at the Bat is up there too.

Sorry, "Lisa's Substitute" and "Cape Feare." It's going to be the angry meta one.

Tossup btwn Homers Enemy and Cape Feare for me.

the Bronski Review (Trayce), Thursday, 9 January 2014 00:52 (eleven years ago)

tbh i have never really understood the fuss over 'homer's enemy,' pro or con. it's a middling episode at best.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 9 January 2014 01:04 (eleven years ago)

Well, to start, Homer wakes up from dozing off at the funeral for the only person who ever truly had his number and mumbles "Change the channel." There's that.

Also, the racing stripe is quite fetching, I think.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 January 2014 01:12 (eleven years ago)

"I live above a bowling alley below another bowling alley!!"

And basically a manic induced onscreen suicide. Its pretty out there for its day.

the Bronski Review (Trayce), Thursday, 9 January 2014 01:59 (eleven years ago)

Oh! And I always forget the subplot with Bart owning the factory, I mean cmon!

"well... first it started falling over... then it fell over!".

the Bronski Review (Trayce), Thursday, 9 January 2014 02:01 (eleven years ago)

tbh that last scene has always seemed kind of weird to me -- earlier in the episode, homer seemed genuinely distressed that frank grimes didn't like him and went out of his way to try to impress him.

Marge vs. The Monorail - funniest script
Cape Feare - funniest timing/sight gags/absurdity
Lemon of Troy - funniest funny-because-it's-true

Somehow none of these are the archetypal "Simpsons episode" for me - and it feels a shame to slight "Lisa's Substitute" which has so much of the heart that "Monorail" and "Cape Feare" exchange for laying down brilliant jokes every couple of seconds. I think on principle I have to give it to "Lemon of Troy," which I've never laughed at as much as these other two, but shows a little more of that real-world, real-kid vibe in between some preposterous set pieces and the over-the-top storyline.

wrong

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 10 January 2014 00:02 (eleven years ago)

Eh I knew monorail would walk it in.

the Bronski Review (Trayce), Friday, 10 January 2014 00:03 (eleven years ago)

'life on the fast lane' really was kind of a weird consensus choice for season 1. would take the christmas episode or 'krusty gets busted' any day.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 10 January 2014 00:04 (eleven years ago)

Lisa's Substitute 5
Homer's Enemy 4

At least I can have this.

Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Friday, 10 January 2014 01:14 (eleven years ago)

Sorry, Shakey, the mob has spoken.

Ian from Etobicoke (Phil D.), Friday, 10 January 2014 01:40 (eleven years ago)

Missed this; would totally have voted for "Homer's Enemy."
