Landslide win for Dorothy. D-O-R-O-T-H-Y. Dorothy.

O'Toole second.

Not much competition here, tho, for the actress, the character actress. She can play the part any way you want.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 20:09 (eleven years ago)

Is that enough of a threat?

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 20:12 (eleven years ago)

I saw The Verdict again recently.

Were you eating an endive salad?

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 20:21 (eleven years ago)

It knocked the critics on their ass!

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 20:23 (eleven years ago)

I'd normally say Hoffmann by a mile, but I do think Newman is fantastic. (Haven't seen the other three...no real desire to see Gandhi or Missing.) Basically a draw for me, although Newman's concluding statement to the jury is a drag.

clemenza, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 20:29 (eleven years ago)

Newman's good, and he would've won the Oscar if good intentions required rewarding Kingsley.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 20:58 (eleven years ago)

I likely haven't watched any of these movies in 20 years, and my opinion would be meaningless.

So, Lemmon.

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 21:11 (eleven years ago)

kingsley

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 8 January 2014 12:58 (eleven years ago)

a classic terrible Lemmon performance

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 13:24 (eleven years ago)

what a stretch for Hoffman to play an annoying Method actor

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 15:54 (eleven years ago)

For fifteen minutes.

look more carefully

advice Julie doesn't follow.

Costa-Gavras had an anti-capital (Capital?) movie some liked last year. But he couldn't be further out of fashion; no de Palmaesque camera gyrations or Mannesque graphic-novel darkness to make the Young Turks drool.

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 16:17 (eleven years ago)

hoffman pretty easy but o'toole was great as well and kingsley winning is no crime (unlike gandhi winning best pic). that newman performance is great but kinda overrated, ppl seem to have circled that as the one he should have won for and he's just as good in the one he did win for and gave better performances both before the verdict and after color of money. that is a kinda classic terrible lemmon performance but he provides a center for a movie that probably needs it.

balls, Wednesday, 8 January 2014 16:24 (eleven years ago)

soto how much did bruce willis distract you during the verdict?

balls, Wednesday, 8 January 2014 16:26 (eleven years ago)

More distracted by how Lumet and Mamet thought Newman's closing argument persuaded jury to go, "Hm right...let's give this family more than it asked for.

I would've been happy if he'd won for Nobody's Fool.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 16:30 (eleven years ago)

great but kinda overrated

when people think about awards and lists too much

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 16:31 (eleven years ago)

yeah nobody's fool was specifically what i was thinking of, kinda a fan of twilight also though i haven't seen it since it was out (i may have just been in a sentimental mood to see all those old fuckers in a movie). the thirty years of courtroom dramas since the verdict has hurt it considerably, i'd imagine it played considerably more sophisticated at the time w/ an audience of ppl weaned on perry mason reruns.

balls, Wednesday, 8 January 2014 16:38 (eleven years ago)

I had no idea Willis is in The Verdict, which means i last saw it in '82

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 16:40 (eleven years ago)

love it when a dude who devotes a considerable amount of his last days on earth going to baseball nerd conventions and reading and submitting spec contributions to movie blogs tries to pull a holier than thou move about priorities.

balls, Wednesday, 8 January 2014 16:40 (eleven years ago)

It gets the look of northern bars in the middle of the morning and the kind of Frank Galvins who hang out there, and Mason does his snakeoil salesman routine with the expected skill, but, boy, wtf is Charlotte Rampling doing here

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 16:41 (eleven years ago)

i love you xp

come to the next 'baseball nerd convention' (4 days a year) and i'll kick yr ass

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 16:42 (eleven years ago)

yeah willis is an extra in it, he sits behind newman in the courtroom scenes w/ this smirk on his face (shocker).

balls, Wednesday, 8 January 2014 16:42 (eleven years ago)

SPEC CONTRIBUTIONS!? No fucking pay or hope of any ever for that shit and it's coming to an end in 3 weeks, then I will indeed concentrate on my incurable illness.

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 16:44 (eleven years ago)

I've seen The Verdict probably 10 times and didn't know about Bruce Willis.

A friend and I used to imitate Newman's speech when Milo O'Shea calls everyone into chambers: "You were a bag man for the boys downtown, and you still are--I know about you."

clemenza, Thursday, 9 January 2014 05:28 (eleven years ago)

yeah you can see him here in the second row, sitting next to tobin bell

love that bit in The Verdict where Newman and Mason *finally* get a scene alone together and Mason goes to say something, changes his mind, says nothing, sighs and walks out the door. amazing!

piscesx, Thursday, 9 January 2014 08:35 (eleven years ago)

I don't remember if Lumet mentioned the scene in his DVD commentary track. I hope the two actors improvised it.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 9 January 2014 12:04 (eleven years ago)

yeah i wouldn't mind betting they did!

I'm goin' to the Board of Bar Overseers about you people.

clemenza, Monday, 20 January 2014 01:21 (eleven years ago)

Good day, Dr. clemenza.

I said good day sir!

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 20 January 2014 01:56 (eleven years ago)

The top 3 rankings, and the distance between each of them, rather nicely reflect my level of enthusiasm towards these performances (I haven't seen Gandhi or Missing).

Inside Lewellyn Sinclair (cryptosicko), Monday, 20 January 2014 01:57 (eleven years ago)

Alfred: George Gaynes had a pretty big part in Washington Behind Closed Doors, which I just finished the other day. He played Brewster Perry, one of Richard Monckton's (Nixon's) money guys. I kept waiting for him to look helplessly at someone and say, "Does Monckton know?"

clemenza, Monday, 20 January 2014 02:08 (eleven years ago)

O'Toole is entirely in Hoffman's league, I probably voted for him.

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Monday, 20 January 2014 02:22 (eleven years ago)

O'Toole is in Hoffman's league, but My Favorite Year is nowhere near Tootsie's league.

You're such a tickly-wiggly!

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 20 January 2014 03:23 (eleven years ago)

Next time I'm at a supper club, I'm getting a Dubonnet with a twist.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Monday, 20 January 2014 03:33 (eleven years ago)

"I missed you!"

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Monday, 20 January 2014 03:41 (eleven years ago)

I ordered a Dubonnet w/a twist b/c of Tootsie ten years ago. Gross.

However, on a trip to NYC in 2006 I hit the Russian Tea Room. It's smaller than I thought! I did order a double vodka, I think.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 20 January 2014 03:44 (eleven years ago)

The Russian Tea Room closed at the location you see in Tootsie, then reopened some years later at the new place.

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Monday, 20 January 2014 04:49 (eleven years ago)

no, my error. It was closed for four years, but it's the same location.
