A Complete Idiot's Guide to Going Dancing in NYC

Ok, this is probably the lamest thread I have ever made, and there are a lot of contenders.

The lady and I are bored, and we're desperately watching our youth slip away. In the two years since our child was born, and even for a fair amount of time before that, we pretty much stopped going anywhere dance-y other than the occasional friend's party, and we were never big clubbers or anything.

Now we want to go dance somewhere, but we have no fucking clue where to go. Open to a range of stuff but I guess here are my criteria:

- can be pretty much anywhere in Manhattan/Brooklyn/Queens
- Nothing too velvet-ropey/dress-to-impress - casual atmosphere preferred
- don't want to feel like the oldest people in the room at 34
- should be able to go at, say, 10pm on a Saturday night and have it be reasonably alive
- not too house-y or rave-y (although some housey or ravey music mixed in is ok)
- would prefer DJ's that are a little "eclectic" without sacrificing party-rocking -- some chart hip-hop is ok but I don't want to only hear chart hip-hop

ok, that's it, go

All conditions fulfilled by any Dan Selzer production.

...that's all I got.

I go dancing semi-reg but it's all to '60s soul, and my dance partner's other favorite thing is house music I guess? Which you don't want.

I think we could do 60s soul

do u go to new york night train?

No, because I'm an annoying purist about what kind of soul I want to dance to, and I don't like that party. But lots of people do!

I go to Subway Soul when it's happening, which is now rarely/irregularly. Also there are dance sets after Dig Deeper, currently held at Littlefield in Brooklyn, and there's a newish monthly night called NorthSide Soul Club in Williamsburg that may be branching out soon.

nice. I had a huge vintage/rare soul and funk phase during and after college and I still love that stuff. I used to tape Night Train and Across 110th Street off wkcr back what Brian Lind DJ'd and it was good

Oh also DJ Lynn K (on fb) is a very very nice person who plays great funky soul records once a month in the Union Pool back room, that's probably good.

The hardest thing is finding anything alive at 10pm, especially in Brooklyn. 11:45 if you're lucky. Maybe that's not the case with the soul type nights, I wouldn't know.

dan selzer, Monday, 13 January 2014 13:37 (eleven years ago)

No, it's still the case. Needle doesn't even drop till 11 for some nights.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Monday, 13 January 2014 13:43 (eleven years ago)

yeah that was one of my concerns, we're on kind of an early schedule lately, esp H

A friend of mine is really into the Body & Soul party, which is always in the early evening I believe. It's only semi-regular but I'ma try and make the next one.

i think there is probably a BIG market for early low-intensity dance parties in brooklyn somewhere

max, Monday, 13 January 2014 20:09 (eleven years ago)

i have basically given up on going out dancing, its all too intense, too young, too late

max, Monday, 13 January 2014 20:09 (eleven years ago)

selzer is the last real dj alive

max, Monday, 13 January 2014 20:09 (eleven years ago)

yeah I feel like I'm looking for something exactly halfway between a young, intense, late night bushwick dance party and a lame dinner and dancing cruise. Exactly halfway.

I guess we could become one of those couples that "learns salsa" or something
