Winter nights drawing in: Classic or Dud?

In the UK we're entering the season where the hours of daylight are getting noticeably shorter, in the sense that most of the evening is now in darkness. Some people find this depressing whilst others welcome it as an excuse to get either cosy or for more nightlife per day. Personally, I like the darkness. What do you think?

i like it too, it means i can have a roaring log fire when pals come round

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 6 October 2002 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the dark nights because they are cozy and cold, but I miss going outside in the evening because when evening is at 4:30 it's just not right. And I hate getting up and going to school when it is pitch black outdoors.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 6 October 2002 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the encroaching darkness. Sunset walks on cold days are one of the most classic things I can think of. I'm generally happier in winter than in summer.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 6 October 2002 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Long days are my haven. Long nights get very, very wearying very, very quickly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 October 2002 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I like it too. I don't like hot weather or bright sunlight much. And I like the walk from work to the tube when it gets dark early, because you get to look into the lit-up laboratories below street level along Gower Street. There's one with all sorts of strange skeletons in it, in the Darwin Building (named not just in honour of him, but also because it's exactly where his house was), and next to it one rather like Damien Hirst's pharmacy piece.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 6 October 2002 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I do like to cosy up in front of the fire on the cold winter mornings but sometimes it's a struggle to actually get out of bed because it's so dark.

Shaz, Sunday, 6 October 2002 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep, have to agree that the night time rules. I find that your other senses are more alert and you notice cool smells and hear more at night.

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Sunday, 6 October 2002 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer night to day, and I love autumn and winter. More night means more time to walk through cities when they are magical.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 7 October 2002 01:55 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the first night I've noticed this year that smells like autumn (in NY). Makes me feel all cozy and nostalgic.

nory (nory), Monday, 7 October 2002 02:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Long days are my haven. Long nights get very, very wearying very, very quickly.

While I'm not as sensitive to long nights as Ned is, I've oftened dreamed of being able to secure a situation where I can have two homes... for example, Seattle, between April and September, and either Melbourne or Dunedin between October and March.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 7 October 2002 02:16 (twenty-three years ago)

The darker side of the year is always more depressing, I find. This has been compounded by the fact that I haven't actually seen summer for over a year and a half. (spent last summer in Europe, where it was deathly cold) Dud, definately.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 7 October 2002 02:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Except for the drive home from work, I LOVE long winter nights. And I love cold weather. I'm obviously living in the wrong town. But I can always drive up to Big Bear or the High Desert.

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 7 October 2002 02:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't wait til winter. This summer has just dragged on and on. We're into October and the heat's still miserable.

Jody Beth Rosen, Monday, 7 October 2002 03:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Waking up in the morning when they sky is still a really deep blue, making a nice, strong cup of coffee, then curling up on the sofa with my dog over my feet to keep them warm is great. I love the dark drizzly days that we get here, too, when the city get swallowed up fog; it feels like no one else is awake anywhere.

lyra (lyra), Monday, 7 October 2002 04:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic. I like the feeling of being indoors, somewhere warm, while its wet and dark and miserable outside. Beats being out in the sunshine, for me.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the nights too. The only dud I can think of is that I will be less likely to walk home from work in the dark through steenky Vauxhall area, which is a shame. I'll still have the mornings though (if I get up in time). And I love the bite in the air when the sun is shining.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I like it, but there is always the feeling in the back of my mind that the novelty will soon wear off, and it's a hell of a long slog until spring :0(

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the atmosphere but I have more fun in the sun.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 7 October 2002 10:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate driving home in the dark at night, I realise the bus would be worse but since I drive it's driving that I complain about. The contrast is pretty huge, flying down the motorway (at the legal speed but flying) with something good on the radio is classic. When it's dark I just chug along carefully.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 October 2002 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...

so fucking excited

I'm really looking forward to getting some work done after a miserable summer of sweating every time I so much as lifted a finger.

Thomas, Friday, 29 August 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

By the time it's into some serious winter shit here in Minnesota, I'll be moving to where it's summer.

Fuck yeah.

RabiesAngentleman, Friday, 29 August 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

ban surmounter

Jordan, Friday, 29 August 2008 14:50 (seventeen years ago)

Hi! I'm calling from London England! Over here it's been the shittiest August ever! Rain every fucking day for three fucking weeks and now the nights are fair drawing in but the overnight temperature is still 18 degrees and during the day I'm boiling to death without even the recompense of any sunshine!

Just saying, like.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 29 August 2008 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

nope, that doesn't sound very fun

Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

Think we're in for an Indian Summer but I really like those first dark early evenings and the sort of warm and cosy feeling you get. I still get that 'Back To School/University' feeling of *possibility* around then as well, often more than the start of the summer.

Matt DC, Friday, 29 August 2008 14:56 (seventeen years ago)

exactly!

Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 14:57 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah but there's a difference between "warm and cosy feeling" and still sweating even with the windows wide open, no blankets on the bed and two fans going full blast.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

i hate that so, so much.

Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

fucking tell me about it
