Here we go again!

Here's last year's results for your reference:
Coint and Plick 2013 - The Sixth Annual ILX Video Game Poll

Please submit your ballot via email to me at ilgames2014 at gmail dot com

As always we'll be using the Pazz and Jop style vote/point format: You'll have 100 points to divide among your Top 10 games released in 2013, with each entry receiving no more than 30 points and no less than 5 points (seriously, for my sanity this year I need you to keep it to a MINIMUM of five points please). If you'd rather not rank individually, just assign 10 points per game. I'll list the top 50 games of '13 in the final results, presuming I get enough entries.

Additionally, please include the single game released this year that was your biggest disappointment. This can mean it didn't live up to your expectations, flat out sucked, didn't quite get it right... whatever "biggest disappointment" means to you. I'll list the top ten biggest disappointments.

Please note your ILX username on the ballot and the system you personally played each game on. PLEASE WRITE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHY YOU'RE CASTING YOUR VOTES AS YOU ARE; I'll include many of the best comments with the winners. I may ask for additional people to write brief comments once the ball gets rolling; if you'd like to volunteer to write a longer essay/appreciation/critical beatdown of a specific game or games, regardless of where they place on the poll, just let me know. Games that received votes in the 2013 poll will have their numbers rolled onto the 2014 poll, so no need to vote for them twice.

DEADLINE FOR ENTRY IS JANUARY 31st; I'll try to have the final results starting on February 10th. Note: If you want to send an early ballot but revise it later, I don't mind. Also, if you only played a couple games this year, vote anyway! Life doesn't have to be so dang serious.

Pointless obsessive rules:

1) One entry per person.

2) If you don't assign points to your picks, I'll assess each vote at ten points per game. If you do assign points but they add up as either more or less than a hundred, I'll assess each vote at ten points per game. If you assign over 30 or under 5 points to any individual game, I'll assess each vote at ten points per game. If you list more than ten games, I'll just take the top ten on your list. If you include a game that clearly didn't come out in 2009, it won't be counted. Ask on this thread if you want to check to see if your pick is valid. If you're listing an obscure import-only title, flash game, social network or phone game, please include a URL for the game's fan/homepage so I can figure out what you're raving about.

3) Though I'd like you to note what system you've played a game on, I'll be considering votes for a game that's been released on different systems (i.e. PS3/360/PC Fallout New Vegas) as all counting toward one nomination... unless there's a clear difference due to systems that affects gameplay (i.e. Madden for Wii vs Madden for 360). In a case like Mafia II PC vs console, I'll likely not be splitting hairs, but if you want to make the point that you ONLY like the PC version in your ballot, I'll take that into account.

4) In addition to your own thoughts, I would be thrilled if you'd include links to some articles/blogs/vlogs/clogs about your favorites. I'll include as many as possible in the rollout.

5) Flash games, art games, MMORPGs, videogame versions of card and party games, social network games, and mobile phone games are all entirely valid choices as long as they were versions released and played in '13.

I will also accept any game that has been re-released this year in a new format/console, any game that is in a continuous state of change (basically MMORPGs) or downloadable content for a game made prior to 2013. Here's the catch though: I do ask that you keep in the spirit of the thing and only vote for reissues/new content/ongoing games if you played them THIS YEAR and (when applicable) only on the new system in question. If you played Borderlands 2 for the first time this year, don't vote for the game unless you're voting solely for the DLC content released this year. If you're voting for Agricola that means you enjoyed the iOS version, not that you like the board game itself. That sort of thing.

Things that shouldn't be nominated: board games, card games, puzzles, table rpgs, etc. Good rule of thumb is that if it has a screen, it's valid.

A list of some of the best known games released in '13 follows; your ballot will not be limited to these games but they're certainly the front runners and a good place to start your list from. Make sense? Then VOTE!

If you include a game that clearly didn't come out in 2009, it won't be counted.

emil.y, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 20:10 (eleven years ago)

Haha, I tried to get all the 2009/10 stuff out but I missed one I guess.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 20:15 (eleven years ago)

PLAGIARISM!

I wonder if Mordy will have the only ballot, hmmmmmm

polyphonic, Thursday, 16 January 2014 20:04 (eleven years ago)

I will vote, just got to finish my ILM EoY ballot first...

emil.y, Thursday, 16 January 2014 20:06 (eleven years ago)

Oh I will vote, playing/replaying some stuff first

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 16 January 2014 20:16 (eleven years ago)

I still have a stack of five 2013 games that I haven't even started :( I really wish publishers would release stuff in months other than October and November.

salsa shark, Friday, 17 January 2014 22:27 (eleven years ago)

def will vote, iOS means I've played waaaaay more than 10 games; whereas on the music poll I always struggle to find 25 albums from a given year that I've heard

Euler, Saturday, 18 January 2014 00:02 (eleven years ago)

can we combine candy box votes? can't spend two votes on the both of em but vote splitting would be besides the point I think

Euler, Saturday, 18 January 2014 00:04 (eleven years ago)

split your votes

that'll teach the guy for not managing his portfolio and making sure he maximizes profit by releasing his weird free text based browser games far enough apart to maximize profit

his shareholders are gonna be pissed

late nomination for Fish Out Of Water -- seemed dull as rocks at first, but I went back to it recently, figured out a few mechanics, and its addictive now.

so far I have received two ballots. Can't wait to reveal the top 5 games of 2013!

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 21:25 (eleven years ago)

The results would be really fun if I only used these two ballots to be honest.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 21:36 (eleven years ago)

i'll do my usual ballot that's really, really shitty. working on it now!

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 21:39 (eleven years ago)

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 21:39 (eleven years ago)

i'm def submitting a ballot but i'm playing/replaying a few things first. i don't have any consoles because lol poor, but I DO have some strong opinions about PC games.

Haha, no, I was being silly.

emil.y, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 22:18 (eleven years ago)

I just want an excuse to vote for it again tbh

polyphonic, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 22:19 (eleven years ago)

Submitted! Pretty easy, really. I didn't include any write-ups or anything, if I get round to that should I send them to you or just keep them for the results thread?

Send them later.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Monday, 27 January 2014 17:09 (eleven years ago)

If there aren't enough votes by the 31st I'll just postpone a week. We're not even close at this point imo

Okay, no more ballots. Time to do some math.

polyphonic, Sunday, 9 February 2014 20:11 (eleven years ago)

If I include 5's, there are 114 games that received votes. If I exclude them, there are 93 games. So I'm thinking of doing an honorable mention list for the 5's, and then I'll roll out the rest in four batches. Okay?

polyphonic, Sunday, 9 February 2014 21:55 (eleven years ago)

sounds like a good plan.

eric banana (s.clover), Sunday, 9 February 2014 22:18 (eleven years ago)

how many ballots did you end up receiving? and do you have an idea of when you might start rolling out the results? also wooooooooo

Karl Malone, Sunday, 9 February 2014 22:28 (eleven years ago)

aw, i love seeing the single votes, but i don't blame you, that's an extra assload of work

Nhex, Sunday, 9 February 2014 23:07 (eleven years ago)

yeah the one thing is i'd appreciate comments for the single votes as well, if there are any, out of curiosity, etc.

I'm showing all the votes, but I think I'll do the five-score games in small batches instead of individual posts.

polyphonic, Monday, 10 February 2014 00:11 (eleven years ago)

and do you have an idea of when you might start rolling out the results?

Tomorrow!

polyphonic, Monday, 10 February 2014 00:12 (eleven years ago)

how many ballots did you end up receiving?

27

polyphonic, Monday, 10 February 2014 00:15 (eleven years ago)

after this is over, maybe we should discuss outreach on this thing

Nhex, Monday, 10 February 2014 00:17 (eleven years ago)

Totally failed to nom or vote for Disney Infinity, oops.

JimD, Monday, 10 February 2014 00:17 (eleven years ago)

outreach?

polyphonic, Monday, 10 February 2014 01:49 (eleven years ago)

larger voter base. I've long maintained it's worth it.

Sounds reasonable to me, the games I scored five were more 'I played these, they were reasonably entertaining for a short period of time' than anything else. Don't really require major dissection.

maybe we should discuss outreach on this thing

I'm not really sure how one would go about this? I mean, the voter base is the number of people who post to ilx and have played ten games they would feel comfortable about voting for - I'm not sure if there is a much larger number of these people out there who haven't voted.

emil.y, Monday, 10 February 2014 14:47 (eleven years ago)

what would napoleon do?

Karl Malone, Monday, 10 February 2014 14:49 (eleven years ago)

can't wait for the rollout, btw - favorite poll, every year

Karl Malone, Monday, 10 February 2014 14:50 (eleven years ago)

i don't want to put more weight on forks/poly, but i believe forks used to email some bloggers and such for comments which gave us good stuff

but, OTOH, i'm fine with it just being insular and exclusively ILX opines. i don't know if it's worth it to add more work on this to make the existing work more justified, but hey, i ain't doin' it. i wish i had the programming chops to do some kind of web form magic to make it easier for y'all

Nhex, Monday, 10 February 2014 14:56 (eleven years ago)

honestly, the way i was doing it (with multiple links to essays, developer blogs, reviews, thoughtpieces; video of gameplay; quotes from ilxors; a few choice photos or animations) it took MINIMUM twenty minutes per entry to make. Seeing as there were 100+ nominees last year, you can do the math. the actual polling was really fairly easy and totally scalable from 50 people to 500. my feeling was that if i was going to spend that much time working on this, it had to find a bigger audience or else i was just being crazy.

STOKED STOKED STOKED STOKED

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Monday, 10 February 2014 16:06 (eleven years ago)

eep. you did a great job and everyone loved it, but realistically, i don't think ILG's audience will ever be big enough to justify those kind of man-hours

Nhex, Monday, 10 February 2014 16:06 (eleven years ago)

co-sign (the gif-making was also pretty pointless and time-consuming)

Karl Malone, Monday, 10 February 2014 16:07 (eleven years ago)

but awesome

Nhex, Monday, 10 February 2014 16:07 (eleven years ago)

this year, roll out the results in a single text file, all lowercase, no spaces!

Karl Malone, Monday, 10 February 2014 16:11 (eleven years ago)

it was fun as a weird obsessive thing to do but we'd need to engage a reddit subgroup or a video game blog with some following to make it worth taking back on again at that level. still and all, the threads themselves are something i return to for info on games from a given year and are useful and interesting artifacts. but even so

the nice thing about liking games that no one else does is that i am guaranteed to see some of my faves in the early rundown

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Monday, 10 February 2014 16:14 (eleven years ago)

or to sound less l33t dick, liking games for reasons that no right minded individual would choose as reasons to like games

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Monday, 10 February 2014 16:15 (eleven years ago)

oh shit speaking of which i still owe polyphonic my hate rant, shit. do you need that from me today or can i let it stew up to a lather first

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Monday, 10 February 2014 16:16 (eleven years ago)

one reason i like this poll is the weird casual ilx hivemind aspect. any outreach that made it more predictable would take out all the fun. like i can see the big ticket studio games i'll never play all ranked from 1-10 on any given site.

i could see maybe soliciting on quarter-to-three forums?

eric banana (s.clover), Monday, 10 February 2014 16:43 (eleven years ago)

also, yeah, google docs lets you make real simple surveys that people can fill out to improve the webform aspect with virtually no work.

but in the end, someone still needs to normalize the names, package up the rollout, etc.

eric banana (s.clover), Monday, 10 February 2014 16:44 (eleven years ago)

eh, following Tom Chick's lead ain't much better than going w/the mainstream outlets

maybe there's a logical way we can divide up the work to ease the burden - i wouldn't mind putting in a few hours to help

Coint and Plick 2014 - The Seventh Annual ILX Video Game Poll

emil.y, Monday, 10 February 2014 17:12 (eleven years ago)

the other place i could imagine connecting to would be toucharcade and/or forums therein. but that would overweight the mobile side even further. what i like about the ilx poll is cookie clicker sitting next to whatever big budget moviegame experience thing sitting next to like tiny tower, without anyone pontificating about what a "real game" is or isn't.

eric banana (s.clover), Monday, 10 February 2014 18:09 (eleven years ago)

i hear ya
