You are incapable of frying bacon?

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 23 January 2014 12:38 (eleven years ago)

I'm generally a mayo man myself, which I know is very unbritish of me.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 23 January 2014 12:39 (eleven years ago)

other weirdness - been concocting a mustard vinaigrette thing recently when riding The Bacon Line

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 23 January 2014 12:39 (eleven years ago)

You are incapable of frying bacon?

yes

oh i like EGGS with my bacon as well. more concerned about dairy additions than condiments actually

lex pretend, Thursday, 23 January 2014 12:41 (eleven years ago)

you don't even have to cut bacon or use oil. you just put it on the pan with the hob on, turn it over at some point and it cooks itself. once it looks ready, it's ready.

he drummed, pompously (dog latin), Thursday, 23 January 2014 12:46 (eleven years ago)

Chuck a bit of oil in if you want it crispy.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 23 January 2014 12:48 (eleven years ago)

i don't know what ready looks like. i didn't know you could cook it without oil, i cannot handle oil at all

Ketchup...renegaded recently with a BBQ sauce one and it was top.

What...is difficult about oil?

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Thursday, 23 January 2014 12:54 (eleven years ago)

oil + frying pan = paralysed by nightmares about reconstructive facial surgery, find myself unable to hold frying pan closer than arm's length and looking away

lex pretend, Thursday, 23 January 2014 12:56 (eleven years ago)

Would have to be vegetarian bacon but the only thing i would ever add is French mustard.

Ramnaresh Samhain (ShariVari), Thursday, 23 January 2014 12:56 (eleven years ago)

i worry about you sometimes m8, i really do.

Try grilling it - negates the fear you've got?

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Thursday, 23 January 2014 12:57 (eleven years ago)

i can actually grill things successfully but the grill in this house doesn't work!!! i once tried to make myself cheese on toast and waited in front of the grill for like 50 minutes before i realised it wasn't working

lex pretend, Thursday, 23 January 2014 12:59 (eleven years ago)

Sounds like Lex is perfectly happy relegating his bacon cooking duties tbf.

Mayonnaise

, Thursday, 23 January 2014 13:44 (eleven years ago)

If it was breakfast, I'd have a fried egg in the sandwich instead of brown sauce.

time is a train that make the future flag post (snoball), Thursday, 23 January 2014 13:46 (eleven years ago)

Bacon, lettuce, tomato with mayonnaise is the #2 favoUrite sandwich in GB according to wiki... Reading these replies makes me wonder if that's true tho.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Thursday, 23 January 2014 14:03 (eleven years ago)

Its one thats readily available for some reason. Do ppl make it at home given choice? Doubt it.

gelatinate mess (darraghmac), Thursday, 23 January 2014 14:17 (eleven years ago)

I do, though with aforementioned vinaigrette instead of mayo. It's a corker I tell ye.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 23 January 2014 14:20 (eleven years ago)

Do ppl make it at home given choice? Doubt it.

I do, but usually with avocado instead of lettuce.

Bacon is naturally a bit greasy so it should be okay not to use oil if you don't want to. If you're worried about oil splattering you, you could always get some of that spray-oil which you just spray on and acts like a thin layer to stop the bacon or whatever you're cooking sticking to the pan, but really on a non-stick surface it shouldn't matter. When the bacon is ready is a matter of choice. I don't like mine overcooked or scabby, but some people like it very crispy. I guess it's just a matter of looking at it and if it looks and smells good, it's pretty much ready. It's very hard to get bacon wrong unless you're eating it raw.

he drummed, pompously (dog latin), Thursday, 23 January 2014 14:30 (eleven years ago)

BLT isn't worth doing unless you've got some amazing vine tomatoes. As with club sandwiches, bread must be toasted. Cannot imagine without mayo.

Other worthy bacon sandwich contenders include: bacon/mashed avocado on toast or seeded roll; panini of bacon/cooked spinach/mozzarella AKA 'roadkill'.

baked beings on toast (suzy), Thursday, 23 January 2014 14:34 (eleven years ago)

i find grills basically impossible to use and try to avoid them like the plague. it's why i bought a grill pan.

he drummed, pompously (dog latin), Thursday, 23 January 2014 14:37 (eleven years ago)

Would be brown sauce, but not HP as apparently they're only for men, so fine, fuck you, I won't use you. Ketchup on bacon sandwiches is good sometimes but not as often. And in fact, quite frequently I want just marge - the taste of the bacon doesn't need augmenting.

emil.y, Thursday, 23 January 2014 14:38 (eleven years ago)

Ketchup is a vastly overrated condiment imo.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 23 January 2014 14:39 (eleven years ago)

xxxp I've actually found that with an avocado at the proper ripeness you can forego the mayo altogether. I'm using fake vegetarian bacon now, but the principle is the same.

Ian from Etobicoke (Phil D.), Thursday, 23 January 2014 14:39 (eleven years ago)

mayo

brownie, Thursday, 23 January 2014 14:40 (eleven years ago)

australian bacon is much wider, i think american bacon doesnt have the wider oval part at the top like maybe they sell that as something else idk
it's honestly kinda reedy and skinny

and it took me years to adjust to stiff barklike bacon...i always liked mine softcooked but apparently that is some kind of war crime here ffs

Maple syrup doesn't go on "breakfast," it goes on PANCAKES and WAFFLES. If some gets on your sausage or your savory items and you happen to like that combo, go for it, but you don't just sling syrup across your bacon WILLY-NILLY. It's not like we're just pouring it on EVERYTHING.

I accidentally microwaved some bacon last week

Was trying to defrost it

Came out real chewy, just the way I like it

Hell yeah

bacon is very often overcooked here in US, think it's a holdover from when pork needed to be cooked to a really high temp. or cause it is so skinny and goes from perfectly cooked to overcooked in blink of an eye.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Saturday, 25 January 2014 03:09 (eleven years ago)

but DL the point is that it's a salty porky flavor dynamo that you can add to tons of different dishes to gild the lily

brimstead, Saturday, 25 January 2014 03:13 (eleven years ago)

vast majority of Americans have no idea what our slaughtering practices are. Food safety, esp cooking most meat past medium, was drilled into heads of people in 50s, and has been passed down the generations.

Quincy, M.F. (get bent), Saturday, 25 January 2014 03:17 (eleven years ago)

Quincy, M.F. (get bent), Saturday, 25 January 2014 03:18 (eleven years ago)

yes these british sandwiches with one ingredient sound interesting stoned at 2 am nuevo cuisine options the concept of which i fully support but sandwiches i have most fully enjoyed were celebrations, texture funtime, savory and sweet, substantial meats cheeses and at least two veg in endless personalized variety, no rules, no fear, just don't overdo it and make meatcheese brick.

just (Matt P), Saturday, 25 January 2014 03:32 (eleven years ago)

avocado is a truly heroic sandwich condiment, it just does everything. don't need no dressing, hell don't even need cheese

brimstead, Saturday, 25 January 2014 03:34 (eleven years ago)

tsrobodo, Saturday, 25 January 2014 13:46 (eleven years ago)

These poll results are barking. BLT is only good if someone hand-makes it for you and you can get the mayo excluded.

I nearly sent a burger (off topic alert) back in a restaurant the other day because it had been slathered in unadvertised mayo, but instead in true British fashion I took the burger apart and scraped all the mayo off, leaving a passive aggressive mess of gloop on the plate.

The One True Bacon Sandwich is back-bacon, chewy and flavourful, brown sauce, thick fresh bread, egg optional. Crunchy streaky bacon is so disappointing, you might as well have a Frazzle sandwich.
