Peter Hyams

the man has been directing big budget movies with the biggest stars in the world for 40 years and has not dented the public consciousness at all. like at all. timecop is his current most famous movie and it's like the 15th best van damme movie. "enemies closer" sounds kind of interesting though! is he the most mediocre working filmmaker? will anyone rep for 70-80s hyams joints? i'm fascinated by his career. the way he's managed to never fuck up real bad so he can keep working and never dips above or below the line of acceptability. i checked imdb and ALL of his movies are rated in the 4-7 star range. no razzies for hyams. it's interesting to me that this guy seems to be fundamentally incapable of being interesting. there are a lot of guys similar to him but usually they get handed jurassic park 7 or something and it bombs and they do TV forever afterwards but hyams just keeps that baseline. i'm assuming this poll will only get 4 votes as a monument to the hyams legacy. he'd want it that way.

for the record i'm voting for sudden death, barely, over end of days. i love shitty late period schwarzenegger but sudden death is a really satisfying action movie in that harsh way that action movies never are anymore. powers booth is so bad! he kills an old lady and a million other people because he just want what he wants so intensely. you really believe that he'd kill van damme's kid. the way it should be.

i haven't seen running scared! great cast though. i didn't like midnight run and they're linked in my mind so i've avoided it.

You don't like midnight run that's crazy.

"Turkey In The Straw" coming from someplace in the clouds (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 27 January 2014 03:41 (eleven years ago)

just couldn't hang. i love de niro but sometimes he just seems fatally miscast and it poisons everything. it's like being on a 90 minute bad date. every interaction feels wrong.

have only seen Outland, which I liked, and 2010, which was not as terrible as it could have been, so not voting.

it's interesting to me that this guy seems to be fundamentally incapable of being interesting

it's interesting to me that he's been the director of photography on most if not all of the films he's also directed, which must be quite a rarity for a mainstream Hollywood filmmaker?

capricorn one, outland, 2010, running scared, timecop and even end of days are all perfectly entertaining genre flicks

As a kid I had a funny paperback about the making of 2010. Funny because the bulk of it was reprints of telex communications between Hyams and Clarke.
Even though it appeared like a long Starlog article it was an interesting read. One incident that stuck in my head, Hyams has to track down Douglas Rain and when he places a call he gets very spooked at how Rain sounds *just* like HAL.

Soderbergh is also his own DP, under a pseudonym
