Who on ILE would you like to see come to bareknuckle blows.

Basher Hamilton Vs Stevie Trousers Rematch!! PAY PER VIEW!!

Tom, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Noone. I prefer verbal fights. But who would most likely to end up fighting? Momus and Ally maybe?

nathalie, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll take you all on with one hand tied behind my back.

Emma, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Having missed the actual punch but seen Stevie's dazed face moments later, I'd say anyone who takes on Emma is a fool.

Mark Morris, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Me and Lixi will probably fight again. Just don't mention the washing up.

Sarah, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll 'ave yez all.....I'll 'ave yez all.... (swings arms round ineffectively, falls flat on back)

x0x0

Norman Fay, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Used to work w/ a girl (a Brit in fact: yer a violent bunch) who was constantly punching me. Some solid thumps, too — v. strong chick. My response was never to flinch or even acknowledge she'd touched me, which would frustrate her no end (to my on-going amusement). She'd also challenge me to arm-wrestles, which I'd partake of & tell her "okay start" well after she had. This was just her way of flirting & I quite liked it. Really big tits.

AP, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark's answer reminds me how sad I was to miss the FT cookout. But I probably needed a day off at that point anyway.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Me vs Ned.

Greg, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Goddamn punk. All I'd have to do to distract your attention is to show you a collected set of original Sugar Hill single gift-wrapped in a signed Leeds team jersey from the championship 1969 team, and then trip you while you lunged for it.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd just pull out this comb from my back pocket. Bye, Ned!

Greg, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DAMMIT!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Greg and DG.

Greg, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Greg is a big girl's blouse.

DG, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd like to see dave q take on the whole world.

Nick, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i envision him bugging people with a microphone and camera crew like some kind of smart-ass right-wing libertarian michael moore.

ethan, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought Michael Moore was a left wing libertarian. These crazy libertarians! Give me back my single political axis, that's what I say.

Nick, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, perhaps you were saying a right-wing libertarian version of MM. I see dave q as more of a PJ O'Rourke figure. Or maybe a more intelligent version of Jeremy Clarkson.

Nick, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i don't think moore is libertarian, he's all about extensive government involvement in business. and he's certainly left-wing.

ethan, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes, duh, i meant he'd be like michael moore, but with all those adjectives. the only michael moore quality retained would be the constant pestering.

ethan, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh yes, sorry - switch around that too if we're back on the 'part of being libertarian is believing in an unregulated market' ticket. Which is fine by me - I like being a bit authoritarian. Although despite my 'big business is evil' responses on that politicalcompass.org thing, I still ended up being -6.62 on the authoritarian-libertarian axis.

Nick, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
Basher vs Stevie: a new (old) one on me.

I have been looking for a thread to note the amount of 'talking past each other' that goes on on ilx. I mean: all the people who write large amounts and read other people's - but don't actually address each other. For instance: I have read a ton of Sterling Clover over the years - but I'm not sure that he and I have ever 'exchanged' a single word.

Do others recognize this odd phenomenon?

the pinefox, Thursday, 24 April 2003 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Absolutely, there is less dialogue than there should be, many threads consist of a series of statements. I'm as guilty of this as anyone else admittedly.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 24 April 2003 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

we are all guilty!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 24 April 2003 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Have you ever noticed that a lot of everyday conversation is you just waiting to to say what's on your mind, instead of you listening to what he/she rwally has to say and then replying to that.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 24 April 2003 11:59 (twenty-three years ago)

wow

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I just ate a ham sandwich.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a more entertaining anecdote about ham sandwiches

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

(Tuomas is spot-on though)

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Note that I didn't mean there's something wrong with this; that's just how human interaction works. We're an egoistic species, we are. Nevertheless, sometimes it's interesting to try to forget about everything you have on your mind, and just listen to the other person. It's harder than it seems.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Some of the failure to interact is down to timings. I was talking to Sarah (Starry) about this a couple of weeks ago: we post at different times, and are never on together, so never really interact on the board, despite having met loads of times. There are others with whom I interact quite a bit here on ILE but am unlikely to ever meet. And every other combination of these two separate modes of communication.
