Ideally, it would be normal for the most captivating people to lend their magnetism to the promotion of our best, long term interests. Georgia's, thighs, lips and tempting posture would be subtly manipulating us - the ones who gape at her - into being more judicious consumers, better listeners, more curious and less defensive colleagues and spouses and more interested readers of economic theory or psychotherapy. At present, sex-appeal is given over exclusively to profit seeking - which at present is focused on shoes and clothes rather than education and self-knowledge. The things we genuinely need have not as yet been able, or willing, to draw on the raw appeal of the sexiest people on the planet. That might, with Georgia's help, change one day.

it's no surprise that Alain de Botton is responsible for yet more shit but despite the blaring signifiers I still can't really tell what this is supposed to be doing.

Apparently this is meant to be a counter-point to the Daily Mail – I think articles are written up to match up to DM articles

I know I shouldn't but I want to take up the point from that article and ask if 'sex' actually could be used to 'sell' long term beneficial things. Or is there something inherently immoral in the triggering of our sex drives when no actual sex is going to be coming our way - a very basic lie which is going to make 'using sex to sell' good things impossible.

Anyway there are PLENTY of articles on the site already! So I predict a thread of fun.
'an ogle lie'

Man, too optimistic about relationships, jumps out of a hotel after an argument with his wife.
It can seem very sick to be interested. It is all so sad - and we are not relatives or friends. What has this got to do with us?A lot. Really we should be deeply interested in this story. In terms of news, it is up there with insights from Davos or the IMF's latest report on global growth. What happened in the hotel room was a tragically extreme version of much more familiar events. In moments of utter fury, we too will think that we can't take any more and that it would be better if we, or our partner, were dead. Rage and despair are the universal stuff of rows. It's only the last act that sets Kari and his wife apart.
