Some dipshit on the IMDb message board, re: the new About Last Night:
maybe i am a racist?image for user drogg3-807-505966by drogg3-807-505966 » Thu Jan 30 2014 18:11:31 Flag ▼ | Reply | IMDb member since October 2013But, for God's sake, can producers come up with an original story that's not a remake with black actors in the roles of original white or Hispanic leads!!?? Is everybody a racist because they resent these black actors who are complete buffoons trying to replace REAL actors!!?? Will Smith is an prime example. Will, can you portray a black character in an original role? Will Smith is an exceptional talent. Stick to black comedy. Please!
Leaving aside all that is troubling about the post itself, is this really a thing? I mean, there's this film, and...?
I'm not asking because I want to take down some internet buffoon, but because I'm really interested if this is indeed a new Hollywood trend and, if so, what people think of it. Honestly, when I saw the trailer for this new About Last Night, I was mildly intrigued.

James Belushi was once the lead in a romantic dramedy!!!!

otm, not really seeing this as a thread with much potential

literally the only thing I can think of was the 2010 remake of Death At A Funeral

The obvious solution is to fashion one's remake of another film with just enough alterations that it isn't a direct copy, then never mention the connection in any way, and if accused of copying, deny it.

Awesome Blaxploitation remake of Get Carter (or at least based on the same novel).

Chris Rock also remade Heaven Can Wait. There was the race-reversed Guess Who's Coming To Dinner remake. Brewster's Millions. Does the Honeymooners movie count?

― Number None, Tuesday, 11 February 2014 19:11 (eleven years ago)
The moron who wrote that imdb post was probably also thinking of things like The Karate Kid and the upcoming new version of Annie.
― MrDasher, Tuesday, 11 February 2014 19:33 (eleven years ago)
Is he saying that Will Smith is a "prime example" of a "complete buffoon" while also being an "exceptional talent"?
― MrDasher, Tuesday, 11 February 2014 19:35 (eleven years ago)
so wait, there's racists on imdb?

I think the issue the IMDB poster is raising is where there is an adaption of a story featuring a non-black protagonist where a black actor is cast in that role.
One film I remember critics raising the issue of this was Rising Sun starring Wesley Snipes.
Perhaps some people took issue with the Karate Kid reboot/remake?
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 11 February 2014 20:40 (eleven years ago)
lots of people took issue with the Karate Kid reboot because it was hard to dispel the feeling while watching it that Will and Jada bought their son a lead in a movie for his birthday

Yeah this is not really a "thing" or even a "micro-trend" so we're left with a thread about an imbecilic comment from a racist piece of shit in a worthless corner of the internet
It'll probably do ok

's weird, me and our Han are pretty psyched for the new Annie.
can see why it would be a nightmare for film fans if Hollywood were to suddenly decide to do loads of pointless remakes tho.

superfly is basically a (good) remake of that "one last big score and then I'm OUT, man" noir
also:
the wiz
scream blacula scream (etc)
this was a "thing" in the 1970s
― espring (amateurist), Wednesday, 12 February 2014 00:45 (eleven years ago)
if anything it registers the studios' contempt for their own black-cast productions
oh yeah black caesar -- sort of a remake of little caesar
― espring (amateurist), Wednesday, 12 February 2014 00:47 (eleven years ago)
also, black heat (remake of white heat)
