Should I live in Morocco for a few months?

It just happens I'm going to be in Europe and at loose ends for about 4-5 months next year. I suddenly had an idea today that it might be interesting and fun to live in Morocco. (I was thinking one of the smaller cities, like Fes or something)

The up points are:

  • Cheap.
  • Culturally rich.
  • Nice climate.
  • Cheap.

The down points:

  • Dangerous ?
  • Could be health issues.

Has anyone here been there? Know anyone who's lived there? Got any advice, suggestions, warnings, etc?

Care to elaborate, Mckenzie? Sounds like quite an interesting story.

Fes is crazy. very interesting in the medina, but still crazy! Meknes seemed friendlier. Casablanca was disappointing, and Marrakesh was nice but lots of tourists (although only in comparison to the others).

I really enjoyed Morocco (was there in September) and it's really easy to get around on the trains etc. Most people were really helpful and friendly, it was only the hustlers and fake guides we had to watch out for. I say go, but maybe not on your own.

I was in Morocco last summer and although the hustlers and fake guides are a problem in the larger, more touristy cities (Marrakesh and Tangier in particular - although I wouldn't especially recommend the latter unless you like nasty ports), but at the same time if you're planning on settling in one place for a matter of months, people will get very used to your presence very quickly.

A friend of mine raves about Essouria, which is meant to be a lovely, friendly town off the coast, and apparently considerably more mellow than a lot of the bigger towns and cities.

Essaouira does look nice, unfortunately we didn't have enough time to visit. i think it was a hippy destination (along with Marrakesh) in the 60s and Hendrix wrote about the beach there or something

One of my work colleagues comes from Fes, or very near there, and another spent several days there a few months ago. Both have nothing but good things to say about it, as far as I remember. I'll try to remember to ask for more info tomorrow.

Essaouira is a great town, very relaxed and laid back.
