I got 450. Is that good? Bad? Average? I was doing ok until I mistook Hebrew for Farsi and then my confidence crumbled and I got two more wrong in a row.

soref, Friday, 14 February 2014 22:40 (eleven years ago)

i played it a few times and the most i got was 750 but was as low as 300. after that i think i'm cheating because now i'm learning the clips. my high score is probably due to luck because i can't really distinguish between different south asian, balkan, or southeast asian languages. and i really have no idea about the pacific island ones. or scottish gaelic. i got that one very wrong because it didn't sound like anything to me.

Also got 450! Central Tibetan played a role in my downfall.

pariah newsletter (seandalai), Friday, 14 February 2014 22:46 (eleven years ago)

I got 750 the first and only time round. I'm probably a moderate language nerd, so I was sure of most of my answers, except for South Efate, which I've never heard and then I got two language families mixed up (Polynesian and Tai-Kadai).

well i got 1050 when i just played and i guess it's not cheating that bad to learn some of them because it gets way harder anyway as it gives you more choices. i can really only learn to ID the indo-european ones.

sent from my butt (harbl), Friday, 14 February 2014 22:52 (eleven years ago)

I'll give it another go later. Cheers, harbl.

this is addictive

although quite infuriating when it gives you a choice of 3 former Yugoslavian languages. Bosnian, Croatian or Slovenian? errr

(tbh I am mostly just making assumptions and possibly showing my ignorance here)

950, relied on tiny little clues. Had no idea 32m people spoke Nepali.

ljubljana, Saturday, 15 February 2014 13:28 (eleven years ago)

1350. I guess I need to listen to more music in Dinka and Central Tibetan.

Ramnaresh Samhain (ShariVari), Saturday, 15 February 2014 14:17 (eleven years ago)

Man, on my fourth question I was asked to distinguish between Mandarin and Cantonese... I'm not ashamed of not being able to do that. Got 600 points.

the random english words and the latin text made me think tagalog but it didn't seem right

clouds, Sunday, 31 August 2014 01:28 (ten years ago)

i think urdu or something is close though i have no idea about other similar languages. not tagalog. the random english is in a lot of things! however any time i have heard urdu interpretation from english it has been like half english words and made me laugh

flatizza (harbl), Sunday, 31 August 2014 01:32 (ten years ago)

I am REALLY TERRIBLE at this but so taken with it! Wish you could listen to alternate clips on the "Languages" page so you could associate the sounds & cadence with the language name.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Sunday, 31 August 2014 20:14 (ten years ago)

It covers a lot of territory, but I'm thinking maybe a Turkic language of central asia.

at the top of the label, fifth letter from the left, you see this character: Թ

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T'o_(Armenian_letter)

as far as i can tell, it's only in armenian? but i'm not sure. it does look like it could be georgian but i'm pretty confident it's not amharic

budo jeru, Wednesday, 30 July 2025 20:22 (three days ago)

Georgian fancier than this.

Posts That Witness Madness (Tom D.), Wednesday, 30 July 2025 20:27 (three days ago)

Oh interesting it does look more like Armenian! Armenian has more in common with ancient Georgian than their modern alphabet--the older forms seem to have been created in relation to each other.

xp modern Georgian alphabet is flowier and rounder and more lower-case looking, yes.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Wednesday, 30 July 2025 20:46 (three days ago)

Link at the top of thread is sadly now some sort of casino ad. Ironically I can't really identify which language it is in.
