Summer Olympic Games vs. Winter Olympic Games

summer is the best but i like winter too. i think olympics in general are great. one of the few wonderful things humanity participates in.

summer sports i love:

badminton
basketball
soccer
all the gymnastics
tennis
table tennis

summer sports i will watch and enjoy:

athletics
boxing
swimming
diving
fencing

winter sports i love:

all the figure skatings
all the speed skatings

so summer easy

An entire week of summer olympics is dominated by track and field events, the least exciting of the bunch. Also summer - b grade football tournament, winter - super hyped ice hockey games. Summer - static gun firing events, winter - biathlon.

To be more precise, some track n field events and narratives are great! But it goes on and on with little else being covered for one of those two weeks. Meanwhile there's a great mix of events throughout the winter olympics. And the race events are just not straight races, see short track/ cc sprint hustling, biathlon, tactical play in the longer cross country races.

just hockey and short track speed skating are enough for me to vote winter. Nothing in the summer games is as good as those 2.

Also really enjoyed watching slope-style skiing.

As much as I enjoy the alpine and cross-country skiing events/speed skating/snow-cross madness, this is summer by a million miles just for the sheer variety of awesome sports that I actually care about. Also the involvement of people from all over the entire planet, not just European and American dominance in everything.

That's not really fair, Asia is well represented in the winter games, also in hosting them. Although yeah, for obvious reasons Africa less so.

Ha, it is ridiculous that they list speed skating and short track as distinct events, or freestyle and greco-roman wrestling for that matter, but athletics is just one homogeneous blob.

don't watch either, Summer has fewer nonsports.

Funny thing is they've mixed up the symbols for short track and long track. Very different sports though, a normal speed skater would have no clue what do to on a short track. Also 'freestyle skiing' entails everything from aerials to skicross. Time to update after the addition of more extreme sports.

Winter games have biathalon. Summer games have decathalon + pentathalon!

i get annoyed by the michael phelps-type summer events -- here's a medal for going 50 meters! and here's one for going 100 meters! and another for doing it in a silly way! and another for being on a relay team! etc

The 50 meter sprint is a whole different thing altogether. Most of the people that do that one ONLY do that one. And the relays can be super tense.
