Yay to the joys of the refinance! I'm getting a P4 2.4Ghz Dell with a gig of RAM and an 80G hard drive! THINK OF ALL THE PR0N!!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

(the pr0n thing was a joke, honest)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

*merriment* Which you're all downloading for your wife to enjoy, of course. No jokes allowed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

you bought that off the shopping channel didn't you ...

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope, direct from Dell.com. They were having an excellent deal where you could get a free upgrade to a 19" monitor.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

80G! that's like 25 of the computers we have at work!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I can put everything I have on my current computer on the new one 7 times! Also, going from 96M to 1G RAM = K-(WOO YAY)!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, the RAM improvement = a VERY good thing. I recently did a major upgrade on the Cube so I could properly run OSX and all is happy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I just upgraded to XP! Almost like getting a new computer, right? (Grrr, I am jealous of Dan)

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Things that make me sad: my lurvely lickle SPEED DEMON BASTARD MACHINE OF DOOOOOOOOOOM doesn't ship until October 11. I WANT MY SLEEK AND SHINY NOW.

Things that make me happy: "Fuck All Night" by Mocky. (Tom Ewing, THANK YOU for alerting me to this song!)

(I am now mad at myself because I chickened out of getting the DVD-RW.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...

rassen frassen. forced to upgrade computer at work. two years worth of installing to do. flickr / slashdot / ilx / etc have forgotten me. 100 different hoonja doodahs to install, 100 different settings to reset (font antialiasing? WANT. menu effects? DO NOT WANT). greasemonkey scripts, stylish stylesheets to install. uncommited work to copy over. had to buy an earphone extension lead because the new box will have to sit under desk. still not sure it's got a decent graphics card in it (radion X1550? can't tell at the moment because i'm remote desktopping).

still, 6 times the disk space (but only 1 partition, sigh). dvd burner. er, that's it.

(upgrading ubuntu on laptop at the same time. glutton for punishment obviously. 1.5G to download. "2 days, 11 hours and 22 minutes on a 56K modem")

three months pass...

dudes, could i have some advice on where to buy a new pc online and what to get? i don't need it to do tricks, i just want something really solid, although i'm thinking about running ableton on it too. less than $800 would be good. should i give in to vista?

Jordan, Monday, 5 November 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

Quit trying to turn people into Macs! The guy said a desired $800 budget, not $1200 for a refurb.

Abbott, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

i can't even hang my head with shame at how i'm sitting here with my macbook (thk u work) and my toshiba laptop sits not only closed right next to it but cruelly piled with texts of cultural analysis/blargh. not sure that i'll ever return :/ it does have like 40GB of music on it though that i should deal with.
ok i feel a little shame
it's looking at me now

rrrobyn, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

anyway get something that isn't a celeron and has plenty (1gb+) of ram

DG, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

I want to get a lappy and I am thinking PC, I don't know. It's not really a "need" tho so the idea is making me reluctant due to guilt (all the hardcore thriftiness banged into my head most of my life).

Abbott, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

is there anything wrong with this?

Jordan, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

yeah it won't load :(

DG, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

Also DO NOT GET VISTA.

HI DERE, Monday, 5 November 2007 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

Jordan, Monday, 5 November 2007 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

why not, dan? (says the girl who once got windows ME)

sunny successor, Monday, 5 November 2007 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

xpost esp. vista 64-bit, i did :(

DG, Monday, 5 November 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

nothing works

DG, Monday, 5 November 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

Vista is not yet at the point where it's really good for anything but super high-end games; a lot of music software doesn't run very well on it yet.

HI DERE, Monday, 5 November 2007 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

Abbott, Monday, 5 November 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

Pick the only Mac in >$800 price range = shittiest mac of all.

Abbott, Monday, 5 November 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe you should stop being poor?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 5 November 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

DG, Monday, 5 November 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

Abbott, Monday, 5 November 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

The Mac mini is pretty great for the cash

stet, Monday, 5 November 2007 23:41 (eighteen years ago)

JW< I want my two dollars!

Abbott, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 23:49 (eighteen years ago)

eighteen years pass...

i need a new computer, because my 12yo dell running windows 8.1 crashes a lot and will no longer run most of the things i need

i'm told that certain shit is like 5x as expensive as it was a year or two ago because of that fucker sam altman

what i want:
desktop/tower
bay for a second hard drive
DVD/CD drive (yes i know)

doesn't need to be wicked gaming fast or anything
yeah probably windows because that's what i know
unless someone *really* wants to convince me that linux etc is totally easy to set up and has all the lil freeware programs i want

pls hope me

mookieproof, Sunday, 28 June 2026 01:28 (two months ago)

Look at ZorinOS as a refurb OS for what you have for your current hardware, unless you’re doing CPU/RAM heavy rocket design/intense video or audio apps.

BlackIronPrison, Sunday, 28 June 2026 02:38 (two months ago)

ty!

i am not doing CPU/RAM heavy rocket design/intense video or audio apps

mostly just listening to music, and it would be nice if my cpu/video driver didn't crash when i try to watch a basic video stream

mookieproof, Sunday, 28 June 2026 02:49 (two months ago)

Be sure to put the OS on an internal ssd. No more disks spinning up at random times.

adam t (dat), Sunday, 28 June 2026 08:55 (two months ago)

do you really need a built-in optical drive and/or hard drive bay? or would external be OK?

what's your budget?

, Sunday, 28 June 2026 13:02 (two months ago)

For starters get a used computer. There’s generally about a 50% saving for hardware a year or two old in desktops. People offload their gaming rigs or whatever on Facebook Marketplace all the time, or there are resellers of former office equipment/refurbs with warranties on eBay etc.

assert (matttkkkk), Sunday, 28 June 2026 13:06 (two months ago)

I've had good luck on Backmarket.com, they seem like they have really good inspections on used stuff

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 28 June 2026 13:51 (two months ago)

^ same!

Cattedrale metropolitana di Santa Maria de Episcopio, Sunday, 28 June 2026 13:53 (two months ago)

the only thing to even be bothered about staying ahead of is the windows dropoff otherwise buy as far back as five-six years old if you can imo

i havent looked at that windows out of support or whatever it was deadline in about a year, they seemed to be softening on how it would be applied and adding some other options

Wichita Referee's Assistant (darraghmac), Sunday, 28 June 2026 15:15 (two months ago)

mostly just listening to music, and it would be nice if my cpu/video driver didn't crash when i try to watch a basic video stream

If you like keeping all your stuff where it is, it might be worth looking into turning your old Dell into a file/music server and watching/listening to media through a tablet or some kind of doohickey you stick to a TV that streams from your Dell.

Philip Nunez, Sunday, 28 June 2026 19:36 (two months ago)

thanks lads!

mookieproof, Sunday, 28 June 2026 23:47 (two months ago)

i havent looked at that windows out of support or whatever it was deadline in about a year

not budging from windows 10 until they force me into it.

shaking babies (map), Monday, 29 June 2026 00:27 (two months ago)
