rassen frassen. forced to upgrade computer at work. two years worth of installing to do. flickr / slashdot / ilx / etc have forgotten me. 100 different hoonja doodahs to install, 100 different settings to reset (font antialiasing? WANT. menu effects? DO NOT WANT). greasemonkey scripts, stylish stylesheets to install. uncommited work to copy over. had to buy an earphone extension lead because the new box will have to sit under desk. still not sure it's got a decent graphics card in it (radion X1550? can't tell at the moment because i'm remote desktopping).

still, 6 times the disk space (but only 1 partition, sigh). dvd burner. er, that's it.

(upgrading ubuntu on laptop at the same time. glutton for punishment obviously. 1.5G to download. "2 days, 11 hours and 22 minutes on a 56K modem")

dudes, could i have some advice on where to buy a new pc online and what to get? i don't need it to do tricks, i just want something really solid, although i'm thinking about running ableton on it too. less than $800 would be good. should i give in to vista?

i can't even hang my head with shame at how i'm sitting here with my macbook (thk u work) and my toshiba laptop sits not only closed right next to it but cruelly piled with texts of cultural analysis/blargh. not sure that i'll ever return :/ it does have like 40GB of music on it though that i should deal with.

I want to get a lappy and I am thinking PC, I don't know. It's not really a "need" tho so the idea is making me reluctant due to guilt (all the hardcore thriftiness banged into my head most of my life).

Vista is not yet at the point where it's really good for anything but super high-end games; a lot of music software doesn't run very well on it yet.

i need a new computer, because my 12yo dell running windows 8.1 crashes a lot and will no longer run most of the things i need

i'm told that certain shit is like 5x as expensive as it was a year or two ago because of that fucker sam altman

Look at ZorinOS as a refurb OS for what you have for your current hardware, unless you’re doing CPU/RAM heavy rocket design/intense video or audio apps.

Be sure to put the OS on an internal ssd. No more disks spinning up at random times.

For starters get a used computer. There’s generally about a 50% saving for hardware a year or two old in desktops. People offload their gaming rigs or whatever on Facebook Marketplace all the time, or there are resellers of former office equipment/refurbs with warranties on eBay etc.

I've had good luck on Backmarket.com, they seem like they have really good inspections on used stuff

the only thing to even be bothered about staying ahead of is the windows dropoff otherwise buy as far back as five-six years old if you can imo

If you like keeping all your stuff where it is, it might be worth looking into turning your old Dell into a file/music server and watching/listening to media through a tablet or some kind of doohickey you stick to a TV that streams from your Dell.
