What picks you up when you're down?

If you're having one of those days, do you have a failsafe way to bring yourself back up to reality?

"down" is reality. Being picked back up involves escape into fantasy.

A lot of good laughs. Unfortunately, if it goes on for too long, I feel worse afterwards. Am I somehow depleting my serotonin levels by doing that?

normally i say music. these last couple of days it hasn't been working. part of why i'm a little bit down in the dumps is because of this, which is very unusual.

Love and hard work, ie being able to see the results of something I've done, like cooking or cleaning a room intensively. It's a coping strategy for feeling overwhelmed by things I can't change--at least there are these limited conditions I CAN change! Probably fooling myself but anything to experience some power over my fate for a second.

attempting this CAUSES feeling down

lex pretend, Thursday, 3 April 2014 16:50 (eleven years ago)

anyway music is often the answer but the actual failsafe one is exercise, just going for a run

I've been really feeling the loud music too. Nothing like blasting a favorite album full volume, just wrapping yourself in the sound, feeling the bass, banging your head, etc.

exercise, working outside, reading, cooking, eating well, dancing, coffee n weed in moderation, checking nasa's astronomy picture of the day and reading about space in general.

mattresslessness, Thursday, 3 April 2014 17:31 (eleven years ago)

Exercise can go either way for me. Sometimes it actually heightens the depression, like "what a futile act I'm engaging in at this moment". I have a "no drinks or smokes until bedtime" rule though and that keeps me keen throughout the day, knowing that whatever mood I'd in, there's gonna be a nice shot of bourbon at the end

what abt champagne

a respected member of the hip-hop criticism community (nakhchivan), Thursday, 3 April 2014 17:54 (eleven years ago)

for me it's either "communicating" or "cleaning" that seem to do the trick:

texting my Mom
writing somebody back that I've been meaning to write to
taking out the trash
wiping a surface

also: reading something great, especially out loud- try a Marvell poem f'rinstance

My musical tastes have shifted entirely since I started buying records specifically to listen to while cooking

this actually can be something I have to be careful with or my mood will plummet! our oven has a very loud fan that runs for at least ten minutes after you turn it off. if I'm trying to listen to piano music of any kind and I forget that it's incompatible with the fan, I will get very cranky. composers who keep the fortes coming steadily if the oven's on!

Taking a walk or just finding a way to get some fresh air.
Working out.
Hanging out with Ivy.
Hanging out with Jeff.
Having some laughs and/or beers with my pals.
Reading a book I really like or watching a movie or TV show I really like (that's the escape route option).
