white mint's appeal to me is that it's not green, but then that sort-of makes it dependent on green mint then. green mint stands alone, but white mint is such a satisfying deviation from the usual green = mint story. tough one.

ozmodiar, Sunday, 6 April 2014 02:26 (eleven years ago)

It feels so wrong eating white mint chocolate chip ice cream. I have no idea why. I've tried it a handful of times and I always end up dissatisfied. Maybe it's because the white is actually vanilla and the green is more minty? I've never stopped to think about that.

Oh man I love both of these and I really truly cannot decide

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 6 April 2014 02:34 (eleven years ago)

the trick here is that mint looks green but tastes white

Either is better than any other ice cream flavor ever.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Sunday, 6 April 2014 05:50 (eleven years ago)

i guess the green encapsulates all the greatness of mint chocolate chip from my youth going up to the baskin robbins but i'm older now and appreciate the white more.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Sunday, 6 April 2014 05:51 (eleven years ago)

i'm glad i have somewhere to share this. i never thought mint chocolate chip ice cream worked because of the hardness of the chips. i find i end up melting a mouthful of ice cream on my tongue, swallowing the melted ice cream, and then chewing the chips. it's fine, they're chocolate chips, but i do feel like i'm filtering an undesired sediment out of the ice cream, and i do hate the feeling of biting down on ice cream, maybe because of a bit of dental sensitivity. thanks.

I was going to wait til later to suggest this, but I just need an outlet for it.

Can we talk about white vs green vis-a-vis modern day ice cream/gelato racism in the postcolonial developed world?

I used to dig Breyer's mint chocolate chip when I was a kid, but apparently someone's been fucking around over there, because Breyer's can't even legally call itself ice cream anymore; it's now a "frozen dairy dessert."

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 6 April 2014 11:07 (eleven years ago)

Green. Definitely only green.

how's life, Sunday, 6 April 2014 11:22 (eleven years ago)

isn't the green just food colouring?

smhphony orchestra (crüt), Sunday, 6 April 2014 13:15 (eleven years ago)

mint chocolate chip is amazing no matter what the color and I always thought that the green was just food coloring too so who cares?

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Sunday, 6 April 2014 13:19 (eleven years ago)

yeah i hate the green stuff. it's like a shamrock shake. white is more authentic.

flatizza (harbl), Sunday, 6 April 2014 15:21 (eleven years ago)

White. Green is bullshit food coloring. Might as ell be purple.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 6 April 2014 15:24 (eleven years ago)

Voted for green more for my wife than myself as it's her favorite, especially from Baskin Robbins.

For any Boston peeps on here: the mint chocolate chip at Christina's in Inman Square is a trip. Insane amounts of fresh mint in there, try it!

Mint chocolate chip is the best. Chocolate chip coffee ice cream is almost better. Just almost.

Breyer's got bought out by Unilever which replaced the once-terrific all-natural ice cream (often with just four ingredients - milk, cream, sugar, and flavoring like vanilla) with the chemical concoctions sold now:

Prior to 2006,[2] Breyers was known for producing ice cream with a small number of all-natural ingredients. In recent years, as part of cost-cutting measures since their move from Green Bay, Wisconsin to Unilever's U.S. headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey,[3] Unilever has reformulated many of its flavors with nontraditional, additive ingredients, significantly changing the taste and texture of their desserts as a result.[2] Following similar practices by several of their competitors, and to the consternation of many former customers,[2] Breyers' list of ingredients has expanded to include natural food additives such as tara gum[4] and carob bean gum,[5] artificial additives such as maltodextrin and propylene glycol,[6] and common artificially separated and extracted ingredients such as corn syrup, whey, and others.[5][6]

One result of these cost-cutting practices has been that many of Breyer's U.S. products no longer contain enough milk and cream to be considered "ice cream", and are now labeled "Frozen Dairy Dessert",[7] or "Frozen Dessert" in Canada.[8][9]

Breyers coffee ice cream used to be my fav. Rip

, Saturday, 4 April 2015 19:36 (ten years ago)

The green kind, in low budget $1 form, is absolutely the worst-tasting, grossest ice cream on the market. Don't think I've ever had a white one that bad.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 4 April 2015 21:38 (ten years ago)

i love mint choc chip but maybe even better is peppermint ice cream, with little bits of real peppermint whose mintyness explodes outwards into the vanilla like little peppermint nebulae

breyers was always lame, all natural or not

salthigh, Sunday, 5 April 2015 02:53 (ten years ago)

lame? maybe, I suppose, if you're really into the mouth-feel of carrageenan.
