To be clear: I loved this article, and I feel it's less 'wake up, sheeple', more 'you've woken up, shit stinks, now let's mobilise'

that's the 'extreme scepticism' one i think

verhzleyavbtreleambreb (imago), Thursday, 8 May 2014 21:11 (ten years ago) link

NYT is kinda great tho. BBC, ALJ, NPR good too.

Mordy, Thursday, 8 May 2014 21:12 (ten years ago) link

i have a lot of respect for ppl who go to places where they're killing lots of people and then interview ppl and then file stories about it

Mordy, Thursday, 8 May 2014 21:12 (ten years ago) link

well then, option 4. although it's possible to divorce respect for the individual journalist from hatred/scepticism for their parent institution imo

verhzleyavbtreleambreb (imago), Thursday, 8 May 2014 21:20 (ten years ago) link

The sort of culpability in a crime that is encompassed by watching the Daily Show is so elusive and so pervasive that you're going to be culpable one way or another no matter how hard you try, even if you abstain from all mediated experiences, because there are more crimes out there than just the crimes of the media and you're bound to be distantly involved in at least a few.

epoxy fule (Aimless), Thursday, 8 May 2014 21:49 (ten years ago) link

Just living in this country means you are giving the ok with lots of horrible things that not watching a TV show will not change.

anyway i liked this article a lot and it was basically point-by-point exactly what i wouldn't shut up about the one time i dropped acid, lol (the internet = simultaneously the only possible escape from our imminently suicidal ideology & the most powerful tool ever devised for reinforcing that ideology--"ideology" doesn't even push the right buttons actually; the internet is the potential tool for the redemptive species-change neither christianity nor communism ever had any idea how to actually effect, unexpectedly brought to you by the u.s. defense department--it is lightdark like the apple, or the monolith, or the revolution) but i think the most currently urgent battle in the war it describes has more to do with comcast mergers and sopa (or if you like with the actual physical seizure of some of the infrastructure we let the new railroads build for us) than with abstaining from the daily show. (also glad he just said the daily show and not colbert cuz i still think colbert is good for you, i know that is corny millennial bullshit.) but i agree that people should watch less tv, i guess.

oh god sweet naivety and the lie/dream of Outside

Hastings Banter (Noodle Vague), Friday, 9 May 2014 07:45 (ten years ago) link

well i mean outside is the destruction of power and the harmonious liberation of desire innit

indeed a bigger bill than the daily show is gonna pay

difficult listening hour, Friday, 9 May 2014 08:01 (ten years ago) link

the outside is here, now, inside

Hastings Banter (Noodle Vague), Friday, 9 May 2014 08:02 (ten years ago) link

right!

difficult listening hour, Friday, 9 May 2014 08:03 (ten years ago) link

so none of this shit - and sure it's shit - and all the precious art treasures everybody here loves and makes exceptions for are not shit - are at least as much vectors that move away from power as they are stanchions that reinforce it

Hastings Banter (Noodle Vague), Friday, 9 May 2014 08:04 (ten years ago) link

sorry, "all the precious art treasures...are not not shit"

Hastings Banter (Noodle Vague), Friday, 9 May 2014 08:05 (ten years ago) link

you mean everything or like beyonce

difficult listening hour, Friday, 9 May 2014 08:09 (ten years ago) link

even Beyonce maybe :(

well, everything is shit and not shit

and it's understandable to want to ascribe preciousness to the stuff you love and only to that but please, can we be real with ourselves at least?

Hastings Banter (Noodle Vague), Friday, 9 May 2014 08:11 (ten years ago) link

fully agree that everything is shit and not shit which is what i meant by "lightdark" and on most days prob agree that everything is mostly shit :( but yknow u can't feel that way all the time man

difficult listening hour, Friday, 9 May 2014 08:13 (ten years ago) link

w art usually a lot of the pleasure comes precisely (fuck) from the ways in which it is both shit and not, i feel like?

difficult listening hour, Friday, 9 May 2014 08:15 (ten years ago) link

oh i love a lot of shit, i don't mean it negative so much as "recognise this is all ephemeral, it can be played with, discarded or celebrated, it isn't the material in materialism that's the problem here"

Hastings Banter (Noodle Vague), Friday, 9 May 2014 08:16 (ten years ago) link

sure

content aside tho it's the internet in its form (horizontal/universal/infinite) that still seems to me like a model for an ism-level change, but the exact same infrastructure is what you'd build if you wanted to distract pacify and panoptically enslave, so the two potentials are part of the same monad or whatever, just like how everything else works

it's also possible that i am failing to recognize that the internet is just "the frontier" again and the frontier always gets owned eventually

i think the most currently urgent battle in the war it describes has more to do with comcast mergers and sopa (or if you like with the actual physical seizure of some of the infrastructure we let the new railroads build for us)

I think this is the author's point too - the growing disaffection with media is just the first stage - the damascene moment - in a battle for our freedom to proliferate open lines of communication

NV, will read that Deleuze later, but I suspect you're right to a degree - we're not looking for an Outside of substantive location but of mind

verhzleyavbtreleambreb (imago), Friday, 9 May 2014 10:31 (ten years ago) link

...but then, the two are the same, are they not? ach, well I'd best read the text

verhzleyavbtreleambreb (imago), Friday, 9 May 2014 10:31 (ten years ago) link

anything we build in future will be a reassemblage of the lego we've got now, i guess

something I said yesterday, in a fit of subterranean zeal: "one is right to be suspicious of any announcement made by any authority figure to any public audience", so yeah, System is in my sights, unless of course it isn't an authority figure but a purely disinterested accessory to community organisation

sorry to be all 'don't have a tv' but it wrenches me how much of the ILX discourse is about long-form tv series, pretty much the definition of unthreatening hegemonic comfort-culture

verhzleyavbtreleambreb (imago), Wednesday, 14 May 2014 15:55 (ten years ago) link

have u watched the sopranos yet

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 14 May 2014 15:56 (ten years ago) link

verhzleyavbtreleambreb (imago), Wednesday, 14 May 2014 15:58 (ten years ago) link

if my only option was british tv i wouldn't watch it either

write 500 words of song (sleepingbag), Wednesday, 14 May 2014 15:59 (ten years ago) link

dont have any real interest in any other long-form tv series and every broadsheet article about 'boxset culture' from 2010 was another nadir but the form is no more inherently debilitated any more than the romantic symphony is elevated

tv is a great medium traduced by morons as someone said

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 14 May 2014 16:05 (ten years ago) link

the great majority of the morons doing the traducing are on the watching end of the transaction, unless you categorize corporate venality as moronic.
