I definitely have a preference for even numbers. I tend to set dials to even numbers, round up to even if I can etc. Not sure what this says about anyone, if anything.

I'm drawn to oddity.

I've been friends with a lot of people who have expressed their preferences for odd numbers to me, which for a while in my teens/early 20s made me want to like odd numbers better. I don't have that preference anymore. I've never really figured out what this was about.

Well, all primes are odd with the exception of 2, so odd may stand in as a proxy for prime-preference, among the limited choices offered.

alarms must be set to odd numbers, otherwise they're all good.

oh yeah, some of those people were really hung up on the Fibonacci sequence.

really hung up on the Fibonacci sequence

Were they big fans of The Da Vinci Code or was it that they just liked to say 'Fibonacci'?

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 17:26 (eleven years ago)

Oh right, this is why:

Tool's song "Lateralus" from the album of the same name features the Fibonacci sequence symbolically in the verses of the song. The syllables in the first verse count 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 5, 13, 13, 8, 5, 3. The missing section (2, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8) is later filled in during the second verse.[7][8] The time signatures of the chorus change from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8; as drummer Danny Carey says, "It was originally titled 9-8-7. For the time signatures. Then it turned out that 987 was the 16th number of the Fibonacci sequence. So that was cool."[9]

An even number of people voted for odd.

I have to set my TV volume on certain numbers because the others upset me.

Good numbers are 1,2,3,4,9,10,12,15,16,18,20,21,24,25,27,28,30. Every other number makes me feel uncomfortable, I can't really explain it, and when I'm at friends' homes I have to ask them to set their TV to a good number for me too.

boxedjoy, Friday, 16 May 2014 09:27 (eleven years ago)

my case is much milder. like the OP, i have an affinity, let's say, for nice, even numbers (including any number ending in 5, of course). it is not exactly important to me, but rather seems proper, to set the volume on the TV to a nice, even number, like 24 and not to an itchy oddity like 23. i'm not troubled by the odd numbers, though; just markedly less likely to select them.
