im loyal to no one brand. i cant be boxed in like that. tho if ur gum loses its flavor in > 30 mins, its a deal breaker. i notice this is more likely 2 happen w/ fruit gums, even for brands that have mint gums w/ long lasting flavor. that is p interesting right

I do not chew gum myself. I am indifferent to gum in the mouths of other people. But when I encounter gum outside of mouths, globbed onto the sidewalk or the street, or upon any of the many and varied surfaces one meets in the material world, I HATE GUM!

man, the subway platforms in nyc

i do not chew gum and find it unattractive in others (and kinda repulsive if it involves opening one's mouth), but ffs what's up with just dumping spent gum where people must trod

i might just be scarred by my inability to blow bubbles as a child, tho

mookieproof, Thursday, 15 May 2014 00:58 (ten years ago) link

During the work day. I think it helps keep me focused, my fidget energy goes into that. Plus keeps me from constant snacking. But I get rid of it if I go into a meeting -- I don't want to be the gum-chewing guy at the conference table.

Wrigley's Spearmint or Double-Mint only. Nothing sugarless, don't like artificial sweeteners. I usually have 1-3 of these in my desk:

Mordy, Thursday, 15 May 2014 03:02 (ten years ago) link

gum containing xylitol is good for dental health according to my dental hygenist

i chose trident randomly out if the xylitol gums avail

gum i chew

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 15 May 2014 09:46 (ten years ago) link

I used to chew hella gum, but haven't had a stick in years. Must have a candy shell, like chiclets. Don't know how much crossover there is between that and the xylitol market. Trident sticks are the worst. Nothing like trying to extricate a warm, mushy stick of Trident from its paper wrapper.

how's life, Thursday, 15 May 2014 09:53 (ten years ago) link

Trident spearmint, one stick in the morning, chewed prophylactically because sometimes my stomach doesn't play nice with my meds.

#TweetFromAnUnknownWoman (j.lu), Thursday, 15 May 2014 11:02 (ten years ago) link

I'm not THAT intolerant but...I never chew it at work or in relatively formal social situations. I know how snooty people can be about it. I feel pangs of pity when I see a receptionist or some other public service type doing it.

That said, I think it's FINE for outdoor or physical activity or manual labor jobs (deliveries, home improvement, construction).

I am Sporadicus! (I M Losted), Thursday, 15 May 2014 14:37 (ten years ago) link

at school they told us chewing gum gives you ulcers and that scared me off, also I could never blow bubbles

soref, Thursday, 15 May 2014 14:56 (ten years ago) link

I chew gum sometimes but only as a breath freshener when I can't brush my teeth. My tolerance for having it in my mouth tops out at about ten minutes then it has to go. I also grind my teeth/clench my jaw when I'm stressed so I try to avoid gum because that just exacerbates whatever jaw pain/headache I've managed to clench myself into.

Other people chewing gum doesn't bother me as long as they KEEP THEIR MOUTH CLOSED AND DON'T MAKE DISGUSTING GUM NOISES. Fuck.

When I was quitting smoking, I drove from Atlanta to Greensboro, NC to visit Jeff and since I loooooved smoking while driving, I decided to chew gum the whole way so I wouldn't backslide - sugarless peppermint Hubba Bubba (I don't think they make it anymore but it was wonderful gum). Anyway at the end of the six hour drive my jaw was so sore I couldn't open my mouth wide enough to eat.

carl agatha, Thursday, 15 May 2014 14:59 (ten years ago) link

2 or 3 times a year. I make sure I have some with me on long drives.

WilliamC, Thursday, 15 May 2014 15:03 (ten years ago) link

I chew a lot of sugarless gum. Trident Layers was a total game changer IMHO. I cycle between all its flavors except the listless strawberry.

Sugarless gum is good for dental health if chewed after meals because it stimulates saliva production which in turn has its own anti buildup effect. I had this info from my dentist anyway. I don't think it's anything specific to xylitol.

Why when the Bazooka East Gum Trading Company & Brothers started, your penny got you a short piece of prose by Hardy, Wharton, London or Nerval in every wrapper!

Khamma chameleon (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 00:59 (ten years ago) link

chewing gum is fun. I almost never chew gum at home, just when out and about, like it's a distraction/focusing method in the overstimulating city chaos.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 03:57 (ten years ago) link

Chewing gum gives you that badass don't give a f*@k attitude you may otherwise need a cigarette for. Except your breath tastes good, not bad.
