leg-shaving

I don't do it. It's time-consuming, it hurts my back, and no one is ever going to see my damn legs. Why is this still expected? Guys? Girls? I mean, underarm hair I can understand. It's itchy and annoying and can really lock in odor. But legs... My leg hair ain't ever done me wrong.

(uh, and just for clarification: don't care, never have. nancy doesn't. i don't wuv her any less or any more because of it. plus i have no room to talk since i have hair like a hobbit. sometimes i shave my armpits in the summer because they stink like diseased rat.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Why I don't like leg shaving:
1) It could be interpreted as buying into the myth that (nice) women don't have body hair.
2) It's time-consuming.
3) Nicks sting and bleed like a mother****er (and legs seem to be more vulnerable to nicks and cuts than any other body part that I shave, even the bikini line).

Why I shave my legs anyways:
1) It irritates (and sometimes even hurts) when wind, water or clothing pulls leg hair in directions other than in which it naturally goes.
2) Clothing over hair-free skin gives me a different (and in my opinion, pleasant) sensation.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't shave anything. i suppose some people do it cos having smooth legs is nice to touch. i have discovered that "after shaving it grows back thicker" thing is a myth. i don't get the underarm thing tho - body odour is an attractive smell, and it only gets offensive if you don't wash enough.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I like smooth, but not enough for it to be a preference. I guess I "expect" it, but only in the sense that it's still the norm -- maybe assume is a better word. I assume a woman shaves her legs, if I don't know otherwise. I have all the sympathy in the world for women who don't want to do it, because God knows I wouldn't want to be bothered :)

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law, in this case.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

But smooth turns to stubbly within 24 hours. And one-day stubble is bloody unpleasant, on legs or faces or anything else.

Plus fuzzy knees are k-cute. Official.

petra jane (petra jane), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

why i shave my face:

- my girlfriend won't let me become a total sloth and grow a beard.
- habit.
- it helps me retain my boyish charm.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

if i were a man i would probbly be a beardy man, cos i am too lazy to shave. in fact i once dreamed i had a beard and i looked really handsome.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I shave my legs because it looks and feels nice. More importantly though, I look VERY handsome with a moustache. Sometimes I draw one on with a felt pen. More people should wear those false nose/glasses/moustache combos. Di let's get those and wear them on Friday.

rainy (rainy), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

haha rainy you are a genius!

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

drawn on body hair = classic.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i shave my legs when i can be bothered / have the time ( son gets bored after 5 minutes watching me shower ).
it IS a pain, and a habit picked up in my younger days as a teen wanting to fit in with the image of womenhood that was ( is ) touted.
underarms yes i do that too, and on a much more regular basis. feels cleaner.
i like the moustache idea, might do a 'moko' instead though and scare the gentler people in my quiet neighbourhood.

donna (donna), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Do drawn-on moustaches count as makeup? :)

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

body odour is an attractive smell

Not mine.

I'm in two minds about the whole shaving body hair thing. I think that if it was particularly socially acceptable for boys to remove it then I'd probably be first in line. But I don't have a problem with body hair on girls, nor do I mind when it's removed. Facial hair is wildly unattractive on both sexes.

Tep, it's probably more the norm in the states, I don't know if that's where you are? it's pretty common in New Zealand but I don't think to the extent as the USA, and it's not the norm amongst people I know, it's the exception.

don't do mine legs or anywhere, used to from ages 11ish to about 19 maybe.(I'm 27 now, well almost). Can't stand the look or feel of shaved legs or underarms.

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

if you want to be hardcore, go for threading! it's this ancient indian technique where you take a piece of string and hold it taut, and then use it to cut the hair off really fast. i got this done once on my legs, and i was screaming for about an hour afterwards.

(it really works though)

shaving is like, k-lame in comparison. go for the ultimate pain!

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

hey you two, last night I dreamed that Di had a collection of fake moustaches that I was trying on!

elizabeth anne marjorie spectra, Tuesday, 8 October 2002 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, I'm in the States, spectra. Of course, one reason it's the norm in my area is cause I live in the South -- when I went to a crunchy crunchy liberal arts school in Massachusetts (Hampshire College -- ultimate Frisbee, go go go), shaved was -definitely- the exception. But Hampshire was unlike the rest of the world in most respects except for the function of gravity and the price of paperbacks.

Hey, geeta, how does threading work? I mean, is it special thread or what? (Female friend on AIM wants to know.)

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

rainy: I shave my legs because it looks and feels nice. More importantly though, I look VERY handsome with a moustache. Sometimes I draw one on with a felt pen.

Do you go with the van gogh at the same time? I always do -- it's my most flattering look.

ragnfild (ragnfild), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

{Short term and temporary) Van gogh peek here.

ragnfild (ragnfild), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i shave my legs a couple times a week in the summer and only when i want to wear a skirt in the winter. because frankly i just hate getting made fun of by my *friends* (as no one else cares) when i don't, so i just hypocritically shave and then yell at them a lot about how stupid it is. although shaved legs DO feel nicer and guys should shave their legs too.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

ragnfild - I have used the Van Gogh for special occasions, but for everyday wear I go with the type commonly sported by today's fifty-eight year old taxi driver.

rainy (rainy), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

A little leg stuble is no problem, but if its visible dark hair, ick.

alext (alext), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Smooth ANYTHING feels grebt but as Alex notes I'm too lazy to shave myself mostly so there's no way I'd ever expect anyone else to be different.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I shave my legs because I think it looks better. Also, I don't like the idea of people looking at my legs and labelling me as a feminist-lesbian-greenie-commie-weirdo (even though I am). I grow fur during winter when it's hidden because shaving is a bit time consuming and because razors, shaving cream etc. cost $$$.

I prefer the look of shaved legs on guys too. If I was a guy I would grow an evil-guy beard like The Master from Doctor Who - unless my facial hair was too sparse.

I like soft, fair underarm hair but I have yukky dark hair so I shave that off.

I recently had to shave my forearm because of an injury that required sticky bandages (ouch with fur!). I like the shaved one so much better than the unshaved one. I will not give in to the temptation though - arm shaving is going too far!

toraneko (toraneko), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i EPILATE my legZor, which is k-painful but it makes them permanently bald. eventually. and all the hairs get to grow in winter cos i need all the warmth i can get (plus cannot be arsed obv)

katie (katie), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I love to shave my legs. Shaving cream smells good. I never cut myself. The key is shaving in the bathtub. And afterwards I'm silky smooth & top it all off with lotion. In the wintertime, I don't shave very often because I have this illusion that my little leg hairs keep me SO much warmer. Fortunately, I have light-colored leg hairs anyway.

toraneko (toraneko), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

If I had blond hair, I don't think I'd shave my legs--but, I am a brunette, so off it goes. Once I was messing around with my friend's NADS (hah.) and I waxed off all the hair on my left arm.. it was RAD feeling but I don't think I'll ever do it again because having arm stubble was extremely creepy.

Mandee, Wednesday, 9 October 2002 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Roger Delgado ruled ruled ruled. I might have to grow a beard like that, I can muster one in about 2 weeks after all. I'm sure I'll shave my legs at some point, esp. if the regrowth thicker thing is largely mythical.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 10 October 2002 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Short regrowing hair just FEELS thicker than fully grown hair i suspect. At the risk of really sounding like some greenie-hippy-feminist feral, i'm k-glad to have my leg-hair back to its soft, fuzzy self. It's quite nice, actually.

i once lost a leg-hair growing contest with my ex-g/f. and i didn't actually have to shave at any point. i actually think leg stubble is quite sexy, i rubbed up against some a little while ago and it was grebt. but i've never really had to sleep for extended periods with anyone who resembled a wooly mammoth, so am i in a position to judge?

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 10 October 2002 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
winter and long underwear are here, the time of being bundled up at all times. Shaving (what little I did) has ceased. I kinda like this little change of behavior/change of season. Anyone else a seasonal shaver?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 7 November 2003 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I am totally been a seasonal shaver, only months May- August. Thank god for tights.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 7 November 2003 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

sometimes the leg hair kinda gets pulled by the long underwear or tights, though, that's a bummer. It is warmer though.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 7 November 2003 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i used to shave my legs for that competitive mental/airdraft advantage (cue: breaking away) in my triathlon days. i wasn't very good at it and my legs would end up all bloody due to excessive nicking.

i wonder if the scabbing offset any airfoil advantage caused by the absence leg hair?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 7 November 2003 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

For some reason leg hair or armpit hair on women doesn't really goss me out. Moustache hair is another story.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

my friends who swim all go for the entire season without shaving (and the girls either go "i'm so liberated!" or "ew i'm so hairy") and then shave everything (well, only the guys shave their heads) for sectionals. it's actually kinda cool. especially when the guys get buzz cuts and shave patterns into their hair before shaving it totally.

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
i stopped shaving my legs six months ago.
in the beginning it was just out of laziness, and then it was out of humour, and now i think i might just not ever shave again, because aside from feeling liberated, i feel just more natural...not trying to fit in with the image of today's young woman...sexy, smooth, whorey, etc. haha just kidding....(but really?!)
i also don't really take showers that often. i rarely smell bad. i just get my hair wet and leave the house with what i slept in. oh haha i own one pair of pants, and i wear them every day and i think the longest i have gone without washing them was probably 2 and one half months.
i suppose it helps that it is winter and nobody sees my legs, but reading these comments about and from women who are happy with their hairy legs/lives encourages me. it really does. so, thank you...haha....

pip, Friday, 30 January 2004 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

are you jim morrison?

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I never even started shaving my legs, my mum said 'hey you know if you start doing that you'll have to do it forever and ever like i have to', so i never started and i'm glad. My legs are pretty fucking ugly anyhow, I doubt anyone would ever look long enough to notice if there were hairs or not.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the hair on my legs is completely grown out but the long underwear I wear every day kind of pulls at it around the ankles; it's kind of uncomfortable at the end of the day. How do boys deal with this? Maybe my thin girly sensitive skin is to blame.

Also I have a business trip in the Bahamas coming up and am not sure if I want to shave or not. I usually shave during the summer because it feels nice. Being in a bathing suit in front of the peers in your industry is such a horrible idea.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Go dressed in a catsuit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

ew, you think getting sand out of your swimsuit is hard.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I admit I had not thought of this complication.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

sometimes I want to shave my armpits. after using a particular brand of deodorant i get these balled up armpit hair clumps and they hurt like a mf.

kephm, Friday, 30 January 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i shaved my armpits about four months ago!! I had the same problem as Chris V and as a result the deodorant wasn't working effectively and my super caustic sweat was ruining my t-shirts so i shaved. the hair hasn't grown back fully so it's worked like a charm.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 30 January 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

In the winter, I go about a week without shaving my legs. That's all I can stand.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 30 January 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Bah - I hate to shave my legs, but I like them to be hairless. So I do it, but not very regularly, which drives my husband nuts. I don't think I ever learned to do it properly, so I do cut myself, miss spots (I'm very nearsighted, can hardly see my ankles in the shower), etc. It all comes down to me being a lazy cur.

Waxing my eyebrows was so painful, I can't CONCEIVE of it on that much surface area... I'm now in the midst of getting electrolysis on my eyebrows (they used to grow together in the middle, how dainty and attractive) - v. painful, but worth it in the long run.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Friday, 30 January 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

am i the only person who doesn't think waxing is very painful? especially on legs - it's a pretty tough area of skin, and it's all over so fast... i dunno. i've never undestood people carrying on like it's something amnesty international should look into.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess it depends where you're waxing.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 31 January 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

waxing is painful, and thats a good thing.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Saturday, 31 January 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i shave my legs AND arms. i don't like hair on'em.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 31 January 2004 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

There's something primitive + earthily sexy about a woman with hairy legs, pits + bikini line escaping in all directions. Not keen on too obvious facial hair, though downiness is ok. The look turns me on + in intimate setting the feel is sexy. Find hairless boring, even stubbly legs are more interesting though bit prickly for while, but good to run hands down; anyone heard of women with designer stubble?

Neil Anderson (aeshna5), Friday, 27 February 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I've hinted and fantasized to myself. Now how can I convince my Darling Dark Haired woman to let her pits grow wild and free? I'm afraid to bug about it. She's the type that would do the opposite of what I like.

Bob C, Saturday, 10 April 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Then tell her you want her to shave until she's rid of a few layers of skin.
Speaking of leg-shaving, how do all you girls avoid having horrible, itchy bumps after a bikini line shave? I'm seriously considering stopping doing it altogether, but I don't really want to do that. And I'm not sure I can afford to get it waxed. Help me, LOL, etc.

kirsten (kirsten), Sunday, 11 April 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'M SERIOUS.

kirsten (kirsten), Sunday, 11 April 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know, try exfoillating before shaving and shaving every day. use queen helene's cocoa butter after.

i'm thinking of switching to waxing.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Sunday, 11 April 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I was actually thinking about waxing, but the link that I think YOU (Sam)posted about Brazilian waxing totally terrified me! I mean, it terrified and intrigued me. But it still terrified me.

kirsten (kirsten), Sunday, 11 April 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I refuse to shave bikini line, I don't see the purpose. (I see the purpose in shaving the whole thing, but just the edges is a waste IMO.) I have heard Zirh Fix is good for ingrown hairs.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 11 April 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, the purpose for me is avoiding the possibility of hair sticking of rather scantily-cut underwear. But I suppose rather scantily-cut underwear aren't usually on for too long anyway, so maybe it doesn't matter.

kirsten (kirsten), Sunday, 11 April 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

hahah!

kind scares me too. but mostly b/c the thought of a stranger spreading my cheeks is kinda ooky.

(oh and by the way when i'm talking about "bikini shaving/waxing" i am talking about the whole tamale.)

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Sunday, 11 April 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't find bikini line waxes painful, but i seem to have a very high threshold for beauty treatments. brazilians hurt, but you get serious results.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 11 April 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Kirsten: just don't bother. Shaving itches, waxing hurts. Not caring is painless and cheaper.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 12 April 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm 11 and justshaved for my second time ever today (i was only just allowed to). It was really hard work but was pretty fun....until I'd finished. I was so worried that now I had to do it forever. I hated having hairy legs when all my friends have smooth, perfect legs, so i did it.
Now i'm really scared it's going to grow back really hairy like ti did last time (about 3 times as thick). I don't want to do it again but do I have a choice.......theres just so much pressure to be like eveyrone else.

Rita Ratna, Thursday, 15 April 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

ALL YOU GIRLS MY AGE OUT THERE!!!!!!!!!1 Listen to me now. DO NOT EVER SHAVE IT IS THE WORST THING TO DO. I can understand if you have hairy legs but when they are okay DO NOT BOTHER. My mama said don't do it and i didn't lsiten. Now i have bear legs.

rita ratna, Thursday, 15 April 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Kirsten: creams are gentler than razors.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Cathy and Madchen: You are both very, very correct. Especially Cathy, I think. Because I am reading "creams" as "depilatories" (sp?) and I think those would give me a horrible rash. Therefore, I no longer care.

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

creams are really annoying because theyuse a lot of the bottle in one go, and in two days time you have to do it again. I think the bottle would run out really quickly and that can = heavy $$$$$$$$$$!

Rita Ratna, Sunday, 18 April 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I find nothing at all wrong with eyebrow waxing. I love going and getting my eyebrows shaped because I've grown accustomed to the waxing. In fact, I've taken naps while getting my eyebrows waxed. The real problem starts when they bring in the tweezers.

I can't afford to neglect my legs or my armpits. Unfortunately, I have really thick, dark colored hair, and it is highly noticeable any time I neglect either one of them. And the hair on my thighs is very noticeable to me; maybe not so much for others, but I get rather uncomfortable looking down at them and thus try to take care of them as often as possible.

I usually use electric razors to take care of my body hair problem, but sometimes, if I have enough time or I've left it long enough, I use the depilatory creams, which I actually prefer because it leaves the surface feeling completely smooth and the stubble that does come in actually feels kinda soft.

Hm. Thanks for reminding me I need to shave again. The stubble's starting to come in.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 18 April 2004 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i allways love to see girls in shorts or short skirts and pantyhose, and one day i completely shaved, put on a skirt and nylons and was completely done up.i hand cuffed myself and then heard the door open.it was my sister in law and two of her girl friends.i was caught while completely dressed and cuffed.i was humilated as they stood and laughed.her two girl friends stayed and watched me as she went home and got her camera and took pictures.i will now do everything my sister in law wants,or she will show all the pictures she took.

is leg shaving for women on the wane? just noticing as i hit middle age, the percentage of young women wearing skirts/dresses seems to decrease every generation, and if you're never/rarely bearing your legs, why bother?? of course, i adore smooth legs, but times change.....

gershy, Thursday, 9 August 2007 06:00 (eighteen years ago)

I'm with all the early posters on this thread... don't care, don't really notice. Hairy legs are hugely preferable to bumpy, itchy, irritated legs. Etc.

kenan, Thursday, 9 August 2007 06:08 (eighteen years ago)

Uh, I shave and I wear a lot more trousers/jeans than skirts. I think hairy legs are for men, not girls/women. I just find it icky. Especially if you have pale legs and dark hair.

stevienixed, Thursday, 9 August 2007 07:29 (eighteen years ago)

My partner uses this weird hair removal cream - it melts hair but leaves skin untouched. Now that CAN'T be good for you.

moley, Thursday, 9 August 2007 08:55 (eighteen years ago)

So that stuff actually works for someone? I've never met a woman who's been happy with it.

Mark C, Thursday, 9 August 2007 09:28 (eighteen years ago)

shaved legs just feel nice. to the legs themselves i mean, not just to touch them. shave yr legs and put on soft light trousers, is lovely feeling.

I shave a couple of times a week. Def. if wearing a skirt. It's kind of a pain though and my legs usually feel irritated afterwards.

I liek some creams as they leave your legs feeling so sssssilky.

I never shave my legs ever any more. They appear to have just given up sprouting hair though, and remain kind of baldy. I wish my armpits would do the same, they're fiddly and annoying to dehairify.

Only waxing I have ever done ever is on my eyebrows, and only because there's no real alternative. It makes my nose runny and causes me to sneeze a lot.

Marc, that works for her. Does a good job, as far as I can tell.
