spot on!

AC/DC, Blow Up Your Own Video
[T}he phrase "Blow up your video" makes no sense at all, but the image is of a TV...

No, see. Angus did in fact blow up his video. Once his video blew up, well, that's when the TV went too. The above poster's comments are akin to saying that Timothy McViegh didn't blow up the Murrah Federal Building. Why, all he did was blow up a Ryder truck!

Ok, I'm just responding right now, trying to be less geeky...
No, see. Angus did in fact blow up his video. Once his video blew up, well, that's when the TV went too.
Yeah, ok, it makes sense in a cartoon-logic way: the music video is happening inside the TV. But:
The above poster's comments are akin to saying that Timothy McViegh didn't blow up the Murrah Federal Building.
Not so, if you are returning to the real world where that event happened. The Ryder truck was a physical object that was located next to the Federal Building. The video being blown up on the album cover is a transmission. Again, it does makes a certain fantasy sense.

But what's really interesting is what some of these covers say about what the bands and/or record companies think of their audience! Esp. since album covers are often this moment of sophistication (since, when, the late 60s? early 70s?), semiotic complexity, whatever, where the relationship between word and image is a game or puzzle... and then there's AC/DC's "Flick of the switch"! (or the one above, a great example!)

no opinion, Thursday, 5 February 2004 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

or the one above, a great example
No, Burlap, 'cause that is only a piece of pie up there in the sky on that cover! :-)

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 5 February 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

...not just any old piece of pie though, it's rock pie!

BrianB (BrianB), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

No, Burlap, 'cause that is only a piece of pie up there in the sky on that cover! :-)
I can go all day with this nonsense...
It says "pie", not "a pie"

Pilot's second album, can't look at this without imagining the designers spending all of five minutes coming up with that title/cover image, and then sloping off to the pub for the rest of the day

though it doesn't feature an actual pilot, so I guess it's more 'yawnsomely unimaginative/uninspired' than 'yawnsomely literal'

soref, Sunday, 23 February 2014 23:12 (eleven years ago)

ok the "autorip" kinda kills it

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 24 February 2014 05:02 (eleven years ago)

I think a lot of those are illustrating a visual pun on the title so not Yawnsomely Literal. Might have been thought of as quite imaginative at the time but got dulled by familiarity in the interval years.
Not like somebody's come along and generically botched something up as a bad advertising company might. Seems to be some thought put into what has been illustrated and how.
Also seems that a couple at least may have had the image in mind before naming.
