I e-mailed a bunch of those Latino retro-thrash bands Scott listed above (Infantry, Death Hunter, Slaver, Merciless Death and a couple of others); there'll be a decent-sized piece on the "movement" in the Voice in a couple of weeks.

cool! i keep meaning to e-mail the decibel dudes and tell them to do a story. i don't want to do it, but someone could do a cool scene report.

scott seward, Sunday, 8 July 2007 23:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I think Decibel did the story on neo-retro-thrash already didn't they?

J0hn D., Sunday, 8 July 2007 23:45 (seventeen years ago) link

did they? i don't remember.

Uh, yeah - I produced Accidental Suicide...must have been in '91 or thereabouts. I don't know whatever happened to them. They were nice guys and were friends with Viogression, I believe. Their album was out on Peaceville/Deaf. I got really busy with Death's Human release & tour and I lost track of AS. I recall that their singer was a nice guy - big as hell but soft spoken. One dude had Satan's bangs, his hair was so unique. We had to play with their guitar actions because they tuned down so low.

wait wait Eric Greif posted here and none of us even flinched? wtf to us all

J0hn D., Sunday, 7 October 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago) link

haha... i didn't even notice that. i remember him being like the guru of wisconsin metal or something. i miss morta skuld, at least their demos.

anyone heard the new sodom reunion album? final sign of evil or something like that. angelripper/witchhunter/grave violator line-up, covering the first ep plus songs that were allegedly written at the time and it was recorded/mixed by the band's webmaster for some reason. i haven't heard it - i want to! - but the review on maelstrom said something to the effect that it was "fucking terrible and you'll love it."

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Monday, 8 October 2007 02:15 (seventeen years ago) link

it sounds like Sodom! what's not to love?

scott seward, Monday, 8 October 2007 03:19 (seventeen years ago) link

i even like the new re-recorded moonspell thing of their old satanic stuff. even if i usually think such projects are pretty pointless.

scott seward, Monday, 8 October 2007 03:21 (seventeen years ago) link

i've been digging the stuff that no colours sent me: satanic warmaster, diabolic force, alastor, those who bring the torture.

also got a buttload of french canuck tech-death that i still need to wade through. got like four CDs by the band Obliveon for some reason. they are pretty good though.

best thing ever though is the defiance box that phil threw my way. just sounds so good to me right now. bay area thrash at its bayareaist.

listening to cast in stone by venom, it occurs to me that someone should go back in time and take mantas' fucking pantera and sepultura albums away from him. this shit's kind of embarassing, JUGGA-JUGGA-JUHJUGGA riffs and cronos sounds exhausted. also, WHERE'S THE BASS? i mean, i can HEAR bass but it's coke zero to at war with satan's ginger beer. this is pretty shit, i'm glad i only paid a couple of bucks for it. plus listening to the second disc's "updated" versions of old venom songs is going to be painful and maybe laughable.

i did get messiah's hymns to abramelin used, too, which is pretty killer death/thrash stuff. i want lists of good old death/thrash i might have missed. i'll recommend the r.u. dead? cd here cause it's killer. and they used to be the german band poison, who had one great death/thrash/doom ep and a bunch of subpar demos.

ok, goodnight.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 11 October 2007 08:33 (seventeen years ago) link

post calm before the storm venom albums are all about mantas proving he can really play the guitar, and thus forsaking the low grade, shittily brilliant riffs and hooks he was good at. "i think more arpeggios here, yeah, conrad?"

i secretly like calm before the storm. don't tell anyone.

listening to liers in wait "spiritually uncontrolled." pretty good swede death metal recorded in 1990 or so, yeah dismember and entombed influences with a little bit of grindy american death metal leaking in. they're swedish, so their "mean, nasty, ugly, evil" appearance centers around black jeans, leather jackets, sunglasses and the faintest hint of a beard. maybe that's all they can grow over there, i dunno. but it's a good ep, apparently they later became diabolique who i know nothing about but they're listed as "doom/gothic/rock" or something on metal-archives.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 14:25 (sixteen years ago) link

oh, and outside of one track with overblown euro-harmonizing guitars, i really dig the new nifelheim. they're all balding now.

slaughter's strappado was just reissued again on metal mind. i was gonna post about it on rolling metal but those guys don't know where it's at. they don't know what it's like to have three canadians kick your ass and none of them's gedde lee. all they care about is prog-folk-power-black metal. none of those dudes has a copy of the funeral bitch demo, for instance. this thread is the real.

bonus tracks on this - like four from the album sessions, i think, and a hilarious live show complete with idiotic banter and guys in the crowd screaming "I'M READY TO DIE!!!" and "CELTIC FROST!!!"

i guess this would be the thread where I talk about how much I love Satanic Warmaster. Strength & Honour is one brutal fuckin black metal album. Last one I heard by him though was Carelian Satanist Madness. I've heard that the newer stuff is different, anyone out there a fan? Anyone into real black metal and not fuckin Nachtmystium?!

matt o, Friday, 19 September 2008 21:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm into "real" black metal, but SW always bored the piss out of me. from that same axis, though, torturium were pretty good when they started out.

i'm digging the new arckanum album. fat oldhead riffing. if you are digging craft or latter-day darkthrone you will dig:

http://www.diabolicalconquest.com/news/arckanum-Antikosmos.jpg

also, new impiety ep is kicking my head like a drunk mule:

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll298/Pulverised/impiety2.gif

scott seward, Saturday, 20 September 2008 00:24 (sixteen years ago) link

And rightly so. Impiety are my heroes.

Furthermore, this might be the suitable thread to express my utter shock and repulsion with the results of this all-time chart. Metallica, Iron Maiden, Slayer allright but WHERE THE FUCK DO ALL THOSE TASTELESS MORONS COME FROM THAT PUT FIVE (FIVE!!!) FUCKING OPETH ALBUMS IN AN ALL TIME TOP 25?????????

Siegbran, Saturday, 20 September 2008 21:55 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, that list is lamer than most. i think they were making up iron maiden album titles by the end of it.

fashion-wise this is the best of all metal styles, imo.

I want to be your Dairy Queen (latebloomer), Sunday, 21 September 2008 01:59 (sixteen years ago) link

It seems sort of silly to get annoyed at that chart -- I mean, it's just a tally of what people have in their collections. No big surprise that a lot of metalheads have a bunch of Opeth albums.

Death Enigmatic (J3ff T.), Sunday, 21 September 2008 02:21 (sixteen years ago) link

any metal list where any opeth album beats out reign in blood is obviously wrong.

latebloomer, who are those deadbeats? nice vw bros.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 21 September 2008 09:28 (sixteen years ago) link

J3ff perhaps you're not aware of the effect Opeth has on our man Siegbran.

Has anybody here heard the Voetsek album? It has one of the best sleeves of the year, and kicks ass, and has an hc/thrash version of "Strange Fruit."

also if I haven't said it enough times this year AURA FUCKING NOIR.

J0hn D., Sunday, 21 September 2008 14:13 (sixteen years ago) link

THINGS I HAVE ENJOYED RECENTLY THAT FIT IN THIS THREAD:

sacramentary abolishment - river of corticone
pre-axis of advance/revenge/rites of thy degringolade black/death/grind stuff like a more bizarre beherit/blasphemy thing. or like the bands they eventually became. weird, weird sci-fi/post-apocalypse concept lyrics.

barbatos - rocking metal motherfucker
street punk metal from japan. dumbb.

dr. shrinker - grotesque wedlock
80s death metal dumbassery with early grind influence. pretty good WISCANSIN stuff.

also been listening to manilla road a lot. still. they're not really nasty or evil, maybe a little mean and ugly. but definitely metal. their first album was called METAL, man.

REIGN IN FUDGE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 22 September 2008 16:50 (sixteen years ago) link

just listening to ROTD.
fun stuff

matt o, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 01:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Blackwinds - Flesh Inferno has some pretty rad symphonic black metal a la Emperor or Dimmu Borgir. Gets kind of samey towards the end, but fun while it lasts.

Hyundai Sonata Arctica (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 23 September 2008 01:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Today I'm only listening to Clandestine Blaze
i used to listen to all kinds of things, now i only like black metal
with some occasional death metal
i don't know whats going on

matt o, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 23:40 (sixteen years ago) link

new midnight 10" on nuclear war now is killer. athenar/jaime whatever is an endless font of fucking great punk-metal tank/venom/motorhead riffs and satanic bullshit. the "die hard" version comes with a bonus 7" has a great bonus track + a live performance that ends abruptly when something pyrotechnic happens and the club manager (i think) loses his mind and starts yelling. (they get kicked out in the end.)

REIGN IN FUDGE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 25 September 2008 16:43 (sixteen years ago) link

btw i will keep mentioning midnight until like one person says "oh yeah those guys are alright."

Just heard Sabbat for the first time a couple days ago. How the fuck did I miss out on THIS for so long?

matt o, Thursday, 25 September 2008 23:49 (sixteen years ago) link

sabbat japan? s'gotta be. yeah, i think everyone missed out on them for a long time. back when i first got into metal the only japanese bands i remember hearing about were gastunk and casbah, and some of the hardcore bands. (well, and loudness/ezo/etc. but they're not superrelevant here.)

but yeah, they're great. the early singles comp on time before time is really cool and crude

REIGN IN FUDGE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 26 September 2008 08:58 (sixteen years ago) link

The album I listened to, Evoke, is pretty weird. It's kind of all over the place. there's of course some old-school black metal, some more traditional metal songs, and even this extremely long death/doom sort of song. It's really a fun record

matt o, Saturday, 27 September 2008 13:40 (sixteen years ago) link

that's more or less the template for most of the albums i've heard, and they're definitely a fucking fun band to listen to, makes me wish i knew metal dudes so i could share their awesomeness. oh well.

looking at their nightmarishly huge discography - i think boris would be envious - it doesn't look like they've done a proper album since karmagmassacre in 2003! tons of live albums though.

REIGN IN FUDGE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 27 September 2008 14:07 (sixteen years ago) link

i like midnight! or at least the thing i had on shifty. which is all i've heard, but i liked it a bunch.

not ugly enough for this thread, but i am digging the new album by WINTERFYLLETH on profound lore. and i don't feel like finding the other metal thread right now. u.k. doom guys making "English Heritage Black Metal". one of the dudes is in Atavist, and I dig them too. nice atmosphere. nice chanting. sorry for the non-ugly shout-out though. Winterfylleth make bedtime lullabies as far as black metal goes.

i've got a stupid question. what else sounds like 'reign in blood'? or what should i get next if i love it? metal is so huge, idk much about the sub-genres. i haven't really heard any of the classics, not even metallica! i love the fuck-you lyrics on RIB and the fact that i can still understand them. growls are cool but i need to ease into them. something else nasty and unhinged but not self-conscious about it. and evil. i like 'south of heaven' too, it kicks ass but it's more uh melodic i guess.

Matt P, Saturday, 27 September 2008 20:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Not the same, but similar in quality and importance: try Voivod Killing Technology and Dimension Hatross.
