R.I.P. David Mills who wrote about P-Funk, and just died at age 48 in New Orleans where he was working on the new HBO tv show Treme with David Simon (producer of The Wire)

http://www.avclub.com/articles/rip-david-mills-writer-for-the-wire-and-treme,39701/

Mills first tried his hand at screenwriting with an episode of Homicide, written for his old friend Simon. The episode (starring Robin Williams) was named “Bop Gun” in reference to a Parliament Funkadelic song; Mills was a diehard funk fan, having published the independent fanzine Under The Funk (focusing exclusively on the music of George Clinton) in his early days, and throughout his career he would drop these sorts of P-Funk references in his scripts—even naming his production company Knee Deep after the 1979 song, “(Not Just) Knee Deep.”

I have this book. From Wiki:

In 1998, Mills and some of his fellow Uncut Funk authors edited various interviews they had conducted with P-Funk members over the years. The resulting book, George Clinton and P-Funk: An Oral History, was published as part of the For the Record series, edited by music critic Dave Marsh.

Whats with all the littering? (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 17:57 (fourteen years ago) link

And that AV Club Onion piece lists the name of Mills' fanzine wrong (I wrote for it btw, I had met Mills when we were both at the U of Md)...it was Uncut Funk not Under The Funk

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 18:08 (fourteen years ago) link

lol Under the Funk doesn't even make any sense

"edited by music critic Dave Marsh"

Sounded great up to that part.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 21:26 (fourteen years ago) link

eh, pretty sure he was also the editor for the Sly "Off the Record" book, which is one of the greatest music bios ever (if not THE best)

Bummer, best wishes Garry

Wenlock & Mandelson (Tom D.), Monday, 7 June 2010 15:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Funkadelic. Their recordings with Eddie Hazel are monumental funky guitar bam-a-lam. Since Hendrix was namechecked by George C. himSELF I propose that theoretically Jimi would have adopted a sound similar to Funkadelic crossed with '69 - '74 Miles Davis by the end of 1972. But his lyrics would've been much better; Jimi is under-rated as a wordsmith IMO.
