ha. they sound great, it just hit me one day what they were doing

jaxon, Thursday, 16 August 2007 21:20 (seventeen years ago) link

ha, don't the stone roses have entire b-sides which are just versions of "Standing Here" and "Elephant Stone" played backwards?

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 16 August 2007 21:38 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah and they're brilliant. I'M WITHOUT SHOES is worth a download. oh yeah they add some forward vocals too

so i fucked around with traktor for the first time this weekend and used a lot of the stuff from this thread to start out.

i thought i'd share what i ended up with:

Barlearic Revival

a mountain of one - our eyes
studio - self service (2006 LP version)
sorcerer - egyptian sunset
strategy - running on empty
business man - dubby games (chris isaak - wicked game trentmoller edit)
hatchback - carefree highway
peter visti - dolly (dolly parton - jolene edit)
badly drawn boy - promises (reverso 68 dub)
reggie dokes - the skin i'm in
cantoma - the call

by no means a definitive or even rough guide, but i like how it came out (despite a few near-trainwrecks).

Thx, Grady. This is great. I was able to download Kala today, but I've been listening to your Balaeric Revival so much since this morning that I (sadly) haven't had time to listen to M.I.A.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 20 August 2007 19:47 (seventeen years ago) link

this weekend my friend played me the b side of that peter visti jolene edit - "rain". so ridiculously amazing. it's funny because the music sounds like it's slowed down to 33 but the vocals are normal.

jaxon, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 07:25 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah that one really is great. all three cuts on that 12".

i can't really get into his "balearic love" 12". not feeling either side.

everyone should really, really check outthat mix that Tim is talking about over here. totally pwns my mix, though a slightly different theme. i listened to it twice on big speakers tonite and it was a real treat.

gr8080, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 08:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Love your mix grady. Totally the vibe I'm feeling at the moment.

Tim F, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 13:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Surprised you don't like the Visti single though. Do you like Aeroplane's "Aeroplane"? I suppose that's a better version of the same thing.

Tim F, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 13:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Flash and the Pan - Midnight Man
Kathy Diamond - I Need You
Findlay Brown - Losing the Will to Survive (Beyond the Wizard's Sleeve Mix)
Jane Siberry - The Walking (and Constantly)
Womack & Womack - MPB (Folk Version)

Benjamin Diamond - Sun is Shining

Tim F, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 13:50 (seventeen years ago) link

thanks, Tim and everyone else. i kind of wish i had edited out the rough spots before posting, but whatever. i discovered the "synch" button on my 2nd to last segway.

yeah i like that aeroplane stuff; i bet it'll be big when it drops nwxt month.

also, tables was right about the beatdown EP! still detroit, but very balearic feeling.

gr8080, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:34 (seventeen years ago) link

great mix

I loved Jolene but I don't think I'm ready for the Chris Isaak revival :/

:D great mix grady!

deej, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:59 (seventeen years ago) link

thanks, dmr and deej.

dmr - have you heard the todd terje/ paul simon dub?

gr8080, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:00 (seventeen years ago) link

hmmmm ... no I don't think so! just the dj spun / editions disco paul simon .... which I like a lot ...

dmr, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:08 (seventeen years ago) link

scroll down here: http://www.musiclikedirt.com/2007/05/05/woozy-with-april/

its on that same "get high and go to the beach" mix.

gr8080, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:12 (seventeen years ago) link

oh cool. I dl'd that mix this morning but I didn't get to the end yet.

dmr, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:19 (seventeen years ago) link

paul simon dub is pretty epic.

jaxon, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 19:02 (seventeen years ago) link

because of that peter visti Rain edit i'm checking out Chris Rea. not sure if i'm supposed to like this or not. some of his stuff is great, some is terribly cheesey.

jaxon, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 19:03 (seventeen years ago) link

jaxon check out this:

http://www.discogs.com/release/865453'

"on the beach" is a great tune, but i'm not crazy about terje's "megamix" treatment. (h4rvey loves this song).

the Andreas Vollenweider is sooooo good though - its on that same mix Tim and I are repping for. its the tune my co-resident likes to play at the end of the night.

gr8080, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 19:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Rea is kinda reminding me of Dire Straits, which i like, and Bruce Springsteen, which i'm not liking.

jaxon, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 19:21 (seventeen years ago) link

i want more dire straits edits; i really like the otterman empire one

and i certainly wouldnt say no to an edit of, say, "tunnel of love" or reall anything from post-bitUSA brooce

Supermayer - The Art of Letting Go

Kompakt goes Balearic!! From their forthcoming Save the World LP.

The Macallan 18 Year, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 03:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Love the Sorceror and Hatchback tracks on Grady's mix - hadn't heard them before.

Also that's my favourite track from the Strategy album, so lustrous (I stand by my Luomo-goes-post-rock comments).

Tim F, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 09:53 (seventeen years ago) link

But the biggest revelation provided by grady's mix is that my mp3 of peter visti's "Jolene" edit must be pitched down! The copy I have is much slower, and Dolly sounds like a guy - actually precisely like one of those reosnant mid-to-late 80s rock singers that fits this balearic style (e.g. see the vocalist for A Mountain of One).

Tim F, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 09:58 (seventeen years ago) link

hmmm. i started that track at like +8 to mix in but i'm pretty sure i slowed it down to normal speed before the bass dropped in.

i dont have the vinyl - my version is from a t0rrent.

where is yours from?

gr8080, Sunday, 26 August 2007 04:57 (seventeen years ago) link

No I hear it slow down in your mix, but the speed for the vast majority of it makes perfect sense - Dolly's vocals are as per the original song.

I think the version I have (googling zshare) was played at 33rpm rather than 45rpm.

Tim F, Sunday, 26 August 2007 11:00 (seventeen years ago) link

oic.

prins thomas played this last night, which got a great reaction. (not very balearic revival).

as it was playing i started thinking about the aeroplane track upthread for some reason, specifically thinking that PT probably had a promo copy with him. i started hearing the transition from the linkwood track into the aeroplane track in my head. and lo and behold that was what he mixed into. it sounded great on a big system, and got a great reaction.

Right now I'm really loving Odyssey's "Who" from the Dirty Space Disco comp:

Telephone thing, Monday, 27 August 2007 14:12 (seventeen years ago) link

if an instrumental or dub version of amerie's "crazy wonderful" ever becomes available, it belongs in the nu-balearic canon.

cant stop listening to thios track.

gr8080, Monday, 27 August 2007 23:53 (seventeen years ago) link

that song's pretty great. part of the vocals remind me of the tom tom club.

I talked a bit about the Mungolian Jet Set remix of Ronny & Renzo's "Big Smack & Flies" elsewhere, but it turns out the original is also amazing, as is R&R's remix of Mutron's "Alone". Sort of really heavy synth-rock-disco, not sure how else to describe them but both tracks are epic.

Beyond the Wizard's Sleeve

if they do a balaeric rmx of radiohead could it be called 'beyond the wizard's cap' mix

deej, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 22:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I keep forgetting to raise Invisible Conga People here, despite the fact that "Weird Pains" is one of my absolute favourite things this year. That in particular seems to connect the dots between Balearic, Italians Do It Better style eerie-italo (I think they're connected to the label actually, as well as to DFA) and, er, Villalobos-style minimal? The other tracks on their myspace page go for more of a Tangerine Dream vibe, meanwhile they describe themselves as "house/afro-pop/psychedelic".

Tim F, Thursday, 30 August 2007 13:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Another great balearic mix up at Another Night on Earth - includes the Ronny & Renzo track I mention upthread.

New Antena remix 12" = U&K!!!!!

Especially Seaside Weekend - Escort Remix

http://www.myspace.com/antena1
http://www.myspace.com/permanentvacationrecords (sounds better on this one)

fuck i need to get this before summer is over.

gr8080, Saturday, 1 September 2007 00:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Speaking of Beyond the Wizard's Sleeve, I forgot to mention that I'm loving their remix of Tracey Thorn's "Raise the Roof".

Tim F, Saturday, 1 September 2007 00:52 (seventeen years ago) link

"U&K"? Please enlighten. Probably something obvious I'm missing, but I'm a bit dense and headachy at the moment...

Telephone thing, Saturday, 1 September 2007 05:54 (seventeen years ago) link

urgent and key

Tim F, Saturday, 1 September 2007 06:04 (seventeen years ago) link
