bros -izing bros (k3vin k.), Sunday, 3 July 2011 04:14 (thirteen years ago) link

My pleasure, def weird that there isnt a Suga Free thread, maybe when the next Quik produced SF album drops (fingers crossed).

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Sunday, 3 July 2011 04:42 (thirteen years ago) link

there's a thread on 77 where ppl talk about suga free for a while, but his name isn't in the title -- it was started by gr80, some general music rec thread, i don't remember what it was called & i'm too lazy to search for it

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Wednesday, 24 April 2024 18:35 (six months ago) link

on an alternate timeline, Spinna is part of the production team on Beats, Rhymes & Life and it's a 9/10. I do love that Basement Khemist record, but on the whole, wayyyy too many of his beats went to lackluster MCs. What coulda been!

this one is lovely too

anza808, Wednesday, 24 April 2024 22:47 (six months ago) link

yeah, some of spinna's old beat tapes from the 90s are on spotify. definitely in the right line. oddly the compositions albums aren't on streaming. some really dreamy samples on that stuff.

i can promise you that i owned a copy of this cd. or i must have. i wrote on ilm about sheek louch releases in the early 2000s, so my record is not up for debate. there's no way that i didn't have this. no, i saw it countless times in pawn shops and discount racks and never picked it up. that must be what happened. thank goodness. i could still be swept away tonight by swizz beats plicking at the keyboard on "all for love." the rest, if i had heard it twenty years ago, might have been forgettable. this is random old rap i am loving.

along the same lines, i heard it on lox dipset verzuz which somehow, despite being intended for my demographic, until the youtube algorithm delivered me the repeat of the "who shot ya" freestyle had passed me by.

I just saw that DJ Clark Kent died. Coincidentally, I've been listening to Rakim's first two solo albums lately, on which Clark Kent is the credited producer for many tracks--including my favorite, "It's the R":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkCbsREaLO8

JRN, Friday, 25 October 2024 21:53 (three weeks ago) link

Also coincidentally, I recently listened to a podcast interview with Ski Beatz, where he talked about how crucial Clark Kent was to his early career. Really made it seem like that was the professional connection that made everything possible for him. And Ski is one of my favorite beatmakers ever, so as far as I'm concerned, that alone is a major contribution
