especially on hot summer days.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 19 June 2010 16:01 (fourteen years ago) link

hahahaha, I'm glad you do! sincerely!

I saw Wilco in a minor league baseball stadium last summer and it was glorious

ksh, Saturday, 19 June 2010 16:01 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, i should go see them again -- haven't been to a show since the YHF tour (tho I did see a Tweedy solo show). From all accounts (and that live album) they're pretty great these days.

tylerw, Saturday, 19 June 2010 16:08 (fourteen years ago) link

oh yeah, i've ONLY seen them with the current lineup, and it's just fuckin insane -- like, really, just go :-D

ksh, Saturday, 19 June 2010 16:09 (fourteen years ago) link

scott, if you have enuff beer to drink i bet at least two or three of those comedians will be funny.

ian, Saturday, 19 June 2010 16:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Wilco (The Album) is one of the most disappointing albums I've ever experienced. There's just so little spark going on, it's painful. Especially when you play Summerteeth right after.

interactive drumheads? OMG i am SO there.

the green river festival is coming up in our town. i've never gone, but its supposed to be fun no matter who is playing. cake is the big draw this year. yes, i said cake. allen toussaint will be there too though. i'd like to see him.

http://www.greenriverfestival.com/performers.html

to this day i don't think i've ever heard calexico. i know people really like them.

scott seward, Saturday, 19 June 2010 17:58 (fourteen years ago) link

kind of a mix of NPR and Bonnaroo.

scott seward, Saturday, 19 June 2010 17:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Calexico is a pretty solid band and a reliable live draw. I once saw them with Swell Season and, per the mix of backgrounds, they performed an awesome version of the Pogues' "Fiesta." Because how often do you have an Irish band and a Mariachi (sort of) band on the same stage?

Original line-up of Wilco was a blast, esp. circa "Being There" and "Summerteeth." "YHF" line-up was incredibly powerful, but almost austere. Band did not seem to be having fun, and I saw them several times on that tour. In retrospect, I blame the drugs, because once Tweedy came out of rehab he was clearly having a blast, enjoying the spotlight and reveling in fronting such a solid band. I've loved every show of theirs I've seen in the past few years, including the five-nights of the residency they player here where every Wilco song got performed at least once (including the one from the "Sponge Bob" movie).

Calexico is a pretty solid band

man i love this band too! i'd say they're far better than "pretty solid."

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 19 June 2010 20:09 (fourteen years ago) link

I think Wilco is overated, but they are not terrible.

Lady, Monday, 21 June 2010 23:29 (fourteen years ago) link

I meant pretty solid in the sense that despite releasing nothing but good to great records, the differences between the two are negligible. Just totally consistent, in the zone, but rarely exception, save the group's consistency. They rarely fail, but rarely take risks. It's just the way Calexico rolls. Unlike WIlco, for example, whose riskiest move was ironically a shift from "experimental" stuff to (sublime) MOR.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 21 June 2010 23:51 (fourteen years ago) link

i like calexico's sound a lot -- but i'm not sure if they're great songwriters ...

tylerw, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 00:39 (fourteen years ago) link

In my opinion Calexico took a risk when they went from moody southwestern experimenters to Wilco copycats (Garden Ruin- which is a very nice record I must say). So if anything its backwards compared to Wilco in that respect.

Evan, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 00:42 (fourteen years ago) link

really, tyler? i think of songs like crystal frontier, which is a brilliant, layered song.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 22 June 2010 00:43 (fourteen years ago) link

Spoke through Feast of Wire Calexico is one of my favorite bands ever. From there onward is just a band I really like.

Evan, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 00:46 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, agreed.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 22 June 2010 00:46 (fourteen years ago) link

but please let's get back to wilco, the GREATEST MUSICAL ENSEMBLE EVER TO WALK THE EARTH.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 22 June 2010 00:47 (fourteen years ago) link

(and i kind of mean it. sorry, royal concertgebouw orchestra)
