I didn't know he was the editor of Dwell untill he came and DJ'd Dazzle Ships, though I didn't know his music much before either. He showed up with a Dwell bag and was like "i'm in town for some meetings for Dwell" and I was like "oh cool, you work for Dwell?" and he was like "I'M THE FUCKING EDITOR IN CHIEF!"

Just kidding. He said "I'm the editor" and I said "cool, my mom bought me a subscription."

It's definitely not arch. porn...if it was it'd have more pictures and less text. I like it, but I also used to read Wallpaper and Nest.

And yes, in my experience everybody who works in graphics in any capacity whatsover is also a DJ or producer of electronic music.

What I don't get with him is the time issue...I freelance and have to take entire weeks off just to make a mix CD for my girlfriend.

This is nice and sounds a bit balearic to my ears. Don't know anything about Traks Boys. Anyone know anything about them?

this is a yupsters' music point blank. it's music for people with extra money to spend on cool shit. big record collections don't come for free

nor do vast collections of vintage synths...

Enjoying the Bjorn Torske album right now... the reggae instrumentals are a nice touch.

i was thinking just in terms of "soft rock disco", but yeah, the range of that hatchback album is formidable

The Aeroplane remix of Grace Jones' "Williams Blood" is just lovely, albeit a bit LOL AEROPLANE.

Claremont 56 comp by Balearic Mike and Moonboots is a joy

http://www.phonicarecords.co.uk/detail.aspx?ID=33069

san frandisco, Monday, 15 December 2008 23:46 (fifteen years ago) link

'White Diamond' is just so perfect, the airy light euphoria makes me feel like I'm floating. Yesterday it struck me just how much White Diamond reminds me of Orbital's Belfast, which has (or at least had, but I don't think it's changed) the same effect on me.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 14:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Discovered yesterday that the Hatchback album is really good for wandering round the Natural History Museum in London.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 15:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i'll second sanfran's recommendation for the claremont 56 'originals' compilation by moonboots and balearic mike. there are some quirky JAMS on that one.

anyone else like the tensnake remixes on that new embassy 12" on permanent vacation?

psychgawsple, Thursday, 18 December 2008 01:12 (fifteen years ago) link

I was wondering, does there exist anything like Sad Balearic? Music like melancholy Superpitcher, Pantha Du Prince or Lawrence but in the Balearic-vein? Music that contains that airy Balearic feel, but tends not towards euphoria but to melancholy?

In a perfect world...

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 18 December 2008 01:19 (fifteen years ago) link

I think a lot of Studio has this vibe. Their own material rather than their remixes.

Tim F, Thursday, 18 December 2008 02:11 (fifteen years ago) link

most balearic stuff sounds pretty melancholy to me!

haven't heard that one psych care to share? Permanent vacation is one of my favorite labels of the year. the bostropeso peo 12" is great + woolfy vs. projections + 40 thieves + panthers holyghost remix + dolle jolle, just incredible.

btw, shameless plug but i did a balearic post of some of the stuff off of Claremont 56 recently, on my blog (actually i guess it is max and my blog now cuz we are gay for each other).

while we're on the subject of amazing new 12"s, can i just say BLACKBELT ANDERSEN ON CLAREMONT 56 = OMFG IT'S GORGEOUS.

again, it's on sanfran's blog.

psychgawsple, Thursday, 18 December 2008 05:29 (fifteen years ago) link

pretty much everything Claremont 56 is wicked at the moment. the most recent ones 'the delivery man' and the 7" are both fantastic, as is the blackbelt andersen and the super ashra-y one with the weird name. just got Andersen full-length on Full Pupp, will report on that one as soon as i get a chance to listen...

xpost - why would i be upset? do what you gotta do mang.

fyi the embassy 12" is in stock now at amoeba ;)

i gotta say i passed on it, to be honest...and i've liked some tensnake stuff in the past.

mikebee (BATTAGS), Thursday, 18 December 2008 06:38 (fifteen years ago) link

i downloaded a bunch of old-school baleric stuff at the suggestion of this thread. listened to it in my car, and was like, "i don't get it"

then i listened to the same playlist on vacation, sitting in the sun, looking out on the beach, and it all made so much more sense.
