Side and potentially interesting qn - the 'marriage' of rock and rap has been much-touted since 1985 or so. But a lot of old school hip- hoppers referenced 'rock' in their names or record names anyway - is the separation of the styles of music more a critical/industry thing than a listener/musician thing?

Tom, Tuesday, 24 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I always assumed that was more to do with a "rock the house" sort of sentiment than "I will name myself after rock music" (although rock music may of course have been their thing).

Also see: Augustus Pablo's record label, Rockers; lots of other references in reggae to the word rock, without necessarily meaning ROCK.

To answer the question, I'm out of touch with both these days, but Pete Rock for his two LPs with CL Smooth, which are fantastic. Unfashionably, I think I prefer the second.

Tim, Tuesday, 24 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Pete Rock, no doubt. New Pete Rock album coming out on BBE Records, Slum Village's Detroit label.

w/o CL Smooth this time, oh well.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 24 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Whoa, the battle of the overrated rapper/producers!

Pete Rock: always felt the CL Smooth stuff was boring, (specially that end-of-night-and-we're-getting-a-little-emotional hiphop club staple 'T.R.O.Y.'), but he did put a great big-fun single out in 1996 as part of shortlived INI project called 'Props'; last thing I heard was a 12" with Inspectah Deck a couple of years ago where Rock had embarassingly changed up his production style to rip off both the RZA and DJ Premier.

Large Professor: probably only deserves any kind of respect for introducing Nas to the world on Main Source album track 'Live At The B-B-Q'; has been promising a solo album for at least 7 years, with accompanying bad singles on a multitude of labels; now signed to Matador, which maybe says it all.

I'll go with Pete Rock cuz he doesn't always rap on his records.

joel, Tuesday, 24 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh yeah. You rapophobes out there, who are strangely reading this thread? You will be pleased to note that the LP is to be called "Petestrumentals". Peace.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 24 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

i should have considered that for a lot of people the only large professor they know is his awful matador single. but, i must wonder, why are all the 'midnight marauders' fans not on this thread ?

Most definitely Pete Rock. I don't know where these other people is from, but it sure ain't nowhere near the birthplace of real hip-hop, so save ya wack opinions. Even though Large Pro has given some tasty treats from back in the day, Pete Rock has proved more consistent, and definitely one of the most underrated producers in the game. NYC represents, and Pete Rock holds it down baby!!!

Yo. I admit it. I bought a boot. I know it's weak but I just had to have a copy of the unreleased Large Pro "The LP" record, the one that never got past the promo stage back in '95. Amazing stuff. Too bad it'll never see the light of day.

In the early 90's, I loved them both. I always love pete's music better though. More hits from pete vs. main source (Large Pro) during that time period. And T.R.O.Y was one of the greatest joints ever. So to that previous fan.... You need to wake up! CL ripped that shit apart! Nuff said! I haven't heard "petestrumentals" yet, but i heard there is a second release of that LP with 4-6 new joints w/ vocals from freddie fox and others. I am waiting/looking for that. INI's CD (Center of Attention) is one of the greatest hip-hop albums that never was. No disrepect to the Xtra P, but PETE ROCK iz the shit!

Oh yee of little faith. You really dont know the foundations of hiphop do ya. I feel so sorry for ya. Pete Rock is the answer first of all, but to keep it real... neither of the two are played out. Matter of fact all of you will be banging their tracks shortly. As soon as the corny mainstream rappers that you all probably listen to follows suit and takes it gutter again like Jay Z just did. You stupid thread writers.

Aisle 12, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Extra P was way ahead of his time. C'mon, if it weren't for large pro most cats wouldn't even be filtering basslines. Layering sleigh bells under their drums. Him and paul C pioneered panning & chopping.Organized Konfusion "Stress" remix /Common sense "resurrection" remixes /gangstarr's "gotta get over" remix /Mad skillz "skillz in 95" /Kool G Rap's "money in the bank" & "streets of ny" /THE MAIN SOURCE BREAKING ATOMS LP (undisputed greatest rap album of all time)etc. etc. His catalog is mega solid! But so is Pete's, I do have to say currently (from 98 to present) Pete Rock is dusting Large Professor. You know what.......Fuck this topic.......professor needs to get back to the SP1200 and trash the ASR. That "bout that time" shit is horrible(beatwise).

nino, Friday, 19 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

EXTRA P IS THE ANSWER! I just listened to "It ain't hard to tell" That shit is the illest science ever....the Stanley Clarke Drums.....Human nature filtered out bassline.....michael jackson violins.....classic N.T. horns......& last, The Mountain Live "long Red" yell....................break down any Large Professor production, and you'll see he got the formula. AKINYELE'S VAGINA DINER CLASSIC....THE MAD SCIENTIST CLASSIC......IJUSWANNACHILL CLASSIC......NAS ILLMATIC.........DAMN DAMN DAMN.........

nino, Friday, 19 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I don't really think it's about who better. I think they both have a lot of talent. Large Professor had gone through so much trouble with his record label and as a result, you never heard much out of him. He has done real tight stuff, but you just don't hear much from him anymore. I really doubt you see a lp from him. Pete on the other hand has several album-the lastest being petestrumentals(2 versions) and that was really good. I would like to hear the Extra P do something similar, but like I said I can't see it. They are both 2 of the top underground producers out there.

P-Rock es numero uno!

For Main Source alone I would go with Large Pro. I read he's done another track for Nas, on his new album Stillmatic...

JoB, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Supposedly the Large pro. track with Nas is stand-out. Haven't heard it though. However Pete Rock and CL Smooth reunited and "Soul Survivor 2" is supposedly going to be impressive. Also Pete Rock's remake of 'Shut em Down' with Busta is neat.So... I guess I'm with Rock for the time being?

Honda, Saturday, 1 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Although, they are both dope producers Large Professor is probably better for the simple fact that he was the one who taught Pete how to rythme in the first place. And he is one of the few who can produce and rythme on a skilled level plus I think Pete is his predecessor.

Ill street blues > how my man went down in the game.

aNYWAY.

INI is wack as fuck. Beats are boring and dudes on the mic are lames.

Deda lp has some real good shit on there like "blah uno", "everyman" and "baby pa".

"Wanted dead or alive" Large Pro remix is one of the best beats i ever heard.

"Vagina diner" > "breaking atoms" (just).

"Life is like a dice game" > any of the Large Pro beats on "illmatic", although i never understood why some faggots think "one time 4 your mind" is weak.

"All souled out" ep is better than "mecca and the soul brother".

"Slow down" Pete Rock remix > the original

That Large Pro album from the 90s was pretty wack but the 3 12"s from it rule.

Slept on Large Pro beats : Akinyele-coochie (his remake/tribute to "juicy")...Neek The Exotic-muthafuckin' man.

Slept on Pete Rock beats : Jamal-fades 'em all remix...Bumpy Knux-industry shakedown.

"Soul survivor 2" was underrated. "Beef" by Krumbsnatcha was my shit, that opening joint with dude rhymin' like Last Poets over the wah-wah guitar was bananas, RZA+GZA joint, C.L joints were dope and even Kweli was listenable.

I can't really call it between 'em. I was gonna say that Pete hasn't dropped anything as wack as "first class" lp but the Akinyele joint on that shits on the entire INI album.

MR PERFECT, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 21:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I agree with you about soul survivor 2, i love the CL joints! Which I didn't expect going in.
That Akinyele album is great, "No Exit," "I Luh Her," etc can't get enough of it.

I saw Pete Rock DJ once, it was so much fun.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 23:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Breaking Atoms is excellent all around, but he hasn't built up the legacy that the Chocolate Boy Wonder has. Or the silly nicknames.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 16 March 2006 01:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Large Pro has his share of stupid monikers too - Xtra P, The live guy with glasses etc. Very debatable about Large Professor not building a legacy up in the same way, though. Don't forget that dude ghost-produced tons of stuff for Eric B & Rakim and Kool G. Rap & D.J Polo.

It basically comes down to a battle of cd-r's featuring their best tracks/productions..

Pete Rock :

1. Brand Nubian-slow down remix
2. P.E-shut 'em down remix
3. Pete Rock & C.L Smooth-the creator
4. Pete Rock & C.L Smooth-all souled out
5. Heavy D, Kool G. Rap, Grand Puba etc-don't curse
6. Pete Rock & C.L Smooth-t.r.o.y
7. Pete Rock & C.L Smooth, Grand Puba-skinz
8. Nas-the world is yours
9. Pete Rock & C.L Smooth-tell me
10. Pete Rock & C.L Smooth-the main ingredient
11. Jamal-fades 'em all remix
12. Pete Rock & C.L Smooth-specialize
13. Deda-blah uno
14. Rakim-the saga begins
15. Pete Rock, O.C-respect mine
16. Pete Rock, Raekwon, Ghostface, Prodigy-da game
17. Bumpy Knuckles-industry shakedown
18. Grand Puba-issues remix
19. Pete Rock & C.L Smooth-appreciate
20. Pete Rock, Black Ice-truth is

Large Professor :

1. Eric B & Rakim-let the rhythm hit 'em
2. Kool G. Rap & DJ Polo, Large Pro, Freddie Foxxx, Anton-money in the bank
3. Kool G. Rap & DJ Polo-wanted dead or alive remix
4. Main Source-looking at the front door
5. Main Source, Nas, Joe Fatal, Akinyele-live at the bar b q
6. Slick Rick-it's a boy remix
7. Eric B & Rakim-don't sweat the technique
8. Main Source, Neek-fakin' the funk
9. Nas-life is like a dice game
10. Akinyele-the bomb
11. Akinyele-outta state
12. Nas-halftime
13. Nas-it aint hard to tell
14. Large Professor-the mad scientist
15. Large Professor-ijuswannachill
16. Akinyele-coochie
17. Slick Rick-i sparkle
18. Neek The Exotic-muthafuckin' man
19. Large Professor, Nas-stay chisel/Akinyele-akinyele
20. The U.N-what they want

Still difficult to choose. The deciding factor might be that Large Professor didn't manage to make a group of shitty irish degenerates sound listenable like Pete Rock did with his remix of "jump around".

MR PERFECT, Thursday, 16 March 2006 13:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Have you heard Pete Rock's remix of "Lots of Lovin"? It flips the same sample as "I Luh Her" and it's pretty amazing.

deeeeej, Thursday, 16 March 2006 17:39 (eighteen years ago) link

I have. That's one of the Pete & C.L remixes which is actually worth the hype, unlike the surfboard remix of "the creator".

There was a Pete & C.L remix of "family affair" by Mary J. from a few years back which i was really feelin'.

That C.L "bars of fury" track from last year which he jacked the beat from that 2nd Pete Rock instrumental album after they started beefin' again with the chopped up Al Green sample was also great.

Heh :

Allhiphop.com: Do you wish to comment on some of things that Pete Rock has been saying lately?

CL Smooth: If you’re not here to help, f*** you! Don’t act like I’m a cancer or a parasite. I’m not jealous of you! I would never be jealous of nobody with one car and one garage. I’m trying to get four cars and four garages! What is the matter with you? Come back home. I’m building houses where I sold crack at. So, don’t tell me that I haven’t changed into a better man. I’m not going to allow the negative s**t to display and take the forefront because it’s too hard to come back in the game after ten years and talk s**t to a n***a like me. I don’t even let them street n***as talk to me like that. The biggest record on Pete Rock’s album is from CL Smooth. I don’t have to make it up…ask my hood! I’m not the toughest n***a; I’m just more serious than the average man. It shows in my music, my discipline, and my enthusiasm. All of my enthusiasm is catered toward what I’m trying to build and what these n***as remember about CL and Pete Rock. I’m keeping that legacy alive. How are you going to do thirty shows with me and then tell me you don’t need me? Come on, you never had packed shows until you were with CL! You are fresh off the block, you’re getting all these shows and all this money, but you don’t need me? You need me. I’m telling you to come back home, but come home with a business mind and a plan. Kamikazes never had any plans but crash! The thing about me is I’m diplomatic because I know that overkill is overkill. A lot of times, a n***a is so scared he kills himself, man. I was just here to save that n***a, man because his spirit was broken. He stopped combing his hair and brushing his teeth, and I said to him, “Man, there’s a bigger light than that.” I told him to dust himself off and let’s get it. I just asked him to do his job. Do your job, Pete Rock! I didn’t ask him to be a superhero; I asked that n***a to make me a beat. How did you get to be you if you didn’t make CL any beats? Give me a beat, shut the f*** up, and stop trying to live my life for me. Give me the beat n***a, and let me go out here and please our public! I’m not the problem. The problem was getting your ass on that plane and displaying what you are truly gifted at. Why be a rapper when there’s no future in it for you? You are a wack ass rapper. Let’s be honest!

Allhiphop.com: He did an interview with us back in May, and he hinted that you could not make it on your own. Do you want to respond to that or not?

CL Smooth: That’s his opinion, and he could never say that to me personally. If that’s how Pete Rock lives his life, talking through the media, go ahead. I love you anyway. It takes a whole lot to be me, so I imagine it takes ten times more to be you. He knows me and his family knows me. They know how I get down. True indeed, I smack n***as heads off their shoulders! If you want to talk on the swings and talk s**t to your peers, that s**t doesn’t bother CL. It bothers CL when you lie and create a false image. Snoop Dogg said, “Come holla at me, homie, you know I love you.” How does Snoop love me and my n***a Pete don’t love me? How does Raekwon, Method Man, and the whole f***ing Wu-Tang Clan talk about how they really love me and Pete Rock don’t love me? I walked on blocks that Pete Rock can never walk on. Pete Rock, I love you baby. I’ve got nothing to be ashamed of. I got a good woman and a good life, so what should I be ashamed of? Pete Rock can’t ever disrespect me and not get his head smacked off. He can never say that to my face. I love him anyway. All I’m asking him to do is do the beats. The proof is there. CL Smooth is the biggest s**t on your project and you are a walking contradiction, man. We don’t have to sling no more mud. Make my beats, f****t! Stop playing games and throwing rocks at the dome. How are you going to say without you, I’m not going to make it? You got to say that about yourself. That’s kind of scary, because you are basically saying that I’m going to drown myself trying to drown this n***a. Pete Rock doesn’t have to talk to me. Make my beats though! I’ll cut you a check, you go in the studio, and make my f*cking beats, man. I don’t see anything else happening if you don’t facilitate CL Smooth.

Allhiphop.com: Is there any kind of positive spin that you can add to this whole situation?

CL Smooth: I just want people to hear the truth, man. If I was dogging that brother like he says, half of this s**t wouldn’t have happened. He wouldn’t have an album out! At the end of the day, what’s marketable? You don’t have any new n***as on that sh*t that’s pulling some cargo and making the company ship out some joints, man. Get some n***as that push some weight instead of these light n***as that only YOU get along with. Those sucker ass meatball n***as! I gave Pete Rock what he wanted; now he’s got to give me back. After that, the chapter’s closed. You can juggle fruit stands for all I give a f***! Pete Rock ain’t even the cake…he’s the icing! I’m smooth, but I dog n***as when they play me out of pocket, man! I go to the toughest barbershop in my town where n***as get shot in the barber’s chair! I won’t make it? Man, my woman has more money than Pete Rock! That’s the truth, and she holds me down impeccably! My woman is like, “F*** Pete Rock!” Pete Rock thinks he’s the catalyst to this s**t. Pete Rock needs to play his f***ing role! He’s a spoke in the motherf*cking wheel! He better wake up quick because this world is not big and he will run into me. You will see me. By no means will I sit at home for another ten years and watch a f****t like you prosper! I take his beats and dog them out; that’s what I do. That’s what I’m built for. I take his beats and take them to the f***ing hemisphere! I’m trying to give the people what they want. Let Pete Rock know to stop throwing rocks at the dome because we will knock your teeth the f*** out! I love you, Pete Rock. Stop being a f****t and do your job.
