radiohead's carly simon cover vs the eagles' tom waits cover

"come on, you & whose army" vs "i'm sick and tired of your law and order"

You drag it around like a ball and chain
You wallow in the guilt; you wallow in the pain
You wave it like a flag, you wear it like a crown
Got your mind in the gutter, bringin' everybody down
Complain about the present and blame it on the past
I'd like to find your inner child and kick its little ass

vs

You do it to yourself, you do
And that's what really hurts
Is that you do it to yourself
Just you and no one else
You do it to yourself

Yeeeaahh, Jody Beth U R my new hero (enough so I'm willing to go all TAFKAP for a moment, I guess,) simply for respecting "The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks" *and* "Disco Strangler."

I defer to your obvious discernment...

>Is "Greeks" the only song ever written with the word 'barfing' in it?

Frank and Moon Unit Zappa, "Valley Girl," "barf out, gag me with a spoon" (perhaps more monologue than lyric, alas)

My Man
Best of My Love
Journey of the Sorcerer
Take It to the Limit
Hotel California
New Kid in Town
Life in the Fast Lane
Pretty Maids All in a Row
Try and Love Again
I Can't Tell You Why

I like four that you mention, and would add:

On the Border
The Disco Strangler
Those Shoes

Don Henley's a great singer I almost never want to hear sing.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 18 August 2021 21:29 (two years ago) link

“one of these nights” has maybe my favorite don vocal performance

brimstead, Wednesday, 18 August 2021 23:52 (two years ago) link

Yeah, it's not a bad Bee Gees pastiche and the opening sounds like it would make a great sample.

birdistheword, Thursday, 19 August 2021 00:40 (two years ago) link

it’s more his smokey tone in verses than the chorus for me

brimstead, Thursday, 19 August 2021 00:46 (two years ago) link

I was actually surprised when I found out Don Henley was in the Eagles. Like I knew him as this '80s adult contemporary guy behind "Boys of Summer, "End of the Innocence," "Heart of the Matter," "All She Wants to Do Is Dance," etc. and it was weird to find out that he had this decade-long existence as a "country-rock" guy almost as old as Woodstock. But yeah, I like Henley as a vocalist - I'm much more partial to those '80s hits though.
