how far are we from Todd Terje releasing instrumental edits of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game"

okay surely i am not alone in thinking this would be the most amazing thing?

"lol @ rough trade - everyone knows the 1st BB EP was the weakest!"

Yeah this is almost off-putting to read. It surely means "y'know, it's got a rhythm track and it's a bit cruisy, but it's not scary or anything! nothing too experimental!"

And yeah I'm imagining the most awesome awesome edit of "Wicked Game" right now. Not that the song needs an edit to be fabulous.

does anyone read my posts? http://aurgasm.us/2006/12/hey-dj-friday-chris-isaak-and-dub.html

there totally needs to be a seperate balearic thread as stuff gets lost int he beardo thread to quickly.

the mix that mountain on one did for best foot forward is totally wrecking my head.

in some ways its really great phased out low slung coke rock.

and sometimes i think that balearic is the nu re edit is the new electro is the nu electroclash is the nu...is the nu...is the nu.....
(repeat to fade)

and I think about cnuts going into phonica and asking about the lastest Lindstrom mix of chris rea's Josephine and I want to kill it before it grows.

Hamildan, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 22:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Almost two years old, but the Lindstrom and Prins Thomas LP goes here too. I almost feel like they should have released it under a different moniker and then went ahead and released the 12" versions as themselves. Its not a dance record at all.

Shitty things about my new commute:

-It is 40+ miles one way
-It is 60 - 90 minutes depending on time of day

Awesome things about my new commute:

-It gives me plenty of time to listen to new music
-Music on this thread accompanies commute's view nicely:

WTF - The Cure "Lullaby"???

baaderonixx, Thursday, 2 August 2007 09:19 (seventeen years ago) link

There's no Wiki entry for balearic (the music) so someone should write a really bad one and piss off the purists. I'm so unbalearic that I spelled it wrong twice in my previous post.

Raw Patrick, Thursday, 2 August 2007 09:29 (seventeen years ago) link

there's a wiki entry for 'Balearic Beat', though.

I used to think it was pronounced and spelt 'baleriac', I'm still not really sure if I'm saying it right.

c sharp major, Thursday, 2 August 2007 11:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I've never heard anyone say 'Balearic beat'.

Raw Patrick, Thursday, 2 August 2007 11:14 (seventeen years ago) link

mm, it sounds kind of lame (the word 'beat' in a genre name generally sounds lame and pseudy to me?). 'Balearic house' i've seen used, though.

c sharp major, Thursday, 2 August 2007 11:36 (seventeen years ago) link

"Lullabye" I can totally see if it's the Extended Mix on Mixed Up - I've put that on quite a few balearic-y "Back to Mine" style comps I've made.

http://www.discogs.com/artist/Cantoma

Cantoma AKA Phil Mison (1/2 of Reverso 68 aka Frontera aka Bakazou)

Its a little more on the World Muic side of things, but is without a doubt balearic revival.

Also, Phil is an A+ bro and an English Gent to boot.

gr8080, Thursday, 2 August 2007 21:56 (seventeen years ago) link

here's a moment where i get somewhat confused and ask questions:
- wtf is Kate Bush doing on that list?
- where do QV play into this? Force of Nature?
- has anyone heard the record by Lexx called "Sirocco"? it seems that that fits in nicely.

the table is the table, Thursday, 2 August 2007 23:08 (seventeen years ago) link

All the Music For Dreams/Kenneth Bager stuff works here. Although they've been pretty balearic-esque since the beginning. Bager has an instrumental version of Ripperton's "Les Fleur" that works pretty well.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 2 August 2007 23:20 (seventeen years ago) link

the walk on the wildside version is good too.

gr8080, Thursday, 2 August 2007 23:21 (seventeen years ago) link

There are a couple other balearic threads on ilm that should help you out if you want more info.

xpost - surprisingly, yes!

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 2 August 2007 23:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah I have that Lindstrom album, but I guess I'm probably confused by the definition of Balearic.

Do people agree with the Top 25 list above? I'll try to compile that and see how it flows. I'm also a bit puzled by Kate Bush being on that list.

baaderonixx, Friday, 3 August 2007 08:03 (seventeen years ago) link

i have like 1/2 the songs on that list (which made me rediscover that disgustingly good art of noise track) and the kate bush track fits in pretty well, i think

baaderonixx, Friday, 3 August 2007 10:52 (seventeen years ago) link

why are people surprised by Kate Bush and not CHRIS REA? his presence plus Carly Simon's just demonstrates how deliberately vague, nebulous and flexible the Balearic term always was. It's pretty much just based on whatever Jose Padilla or whoever was dozy enough to play at 8.36am in Cafe Del Mar 20 years ago.

blueski, Friday, 3 August 2007 10:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Rea pretty much *is* adult contemporary, even if I do like "Josephine". He has recently gotten the hipster re-edit treatment by Todd Terje and the Eskimo/Mindless Boogie people, so I'm guessing he's still fresh in people's mind.

12 Sebastien Tellier - La Ritournelle (Lucky Number, 2005)

I've been listening to the music on this thread almost exclusivley for the last three days, giving this ^^^ a spin for ther first time in a year or so just this morning. shortly after listening to it, i left my house and went to my favorite coffe shop and it came on the sound system as i was leaving! kind of weird since that shop usually plays very quiet, anonymous jazz or korean pop music all the time.

gr8080, Saturday, 4 August 2007 00:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm helping my family put together some songs to play at my brother's engagement party, and fittingly enough "La Ritournelle" was the first to receive the seal of approval.

I've been following these guys via myspace for over a year. looks like they're getting an Eskimo release.

I guess maybe they fall in the middle of the venn diagram with Cosmic/Beardo/Edits on one side and Balearic/Revivial/Bands on the other.

Anyone know anything else about them?

Hey, that Wicked Game remix is brilliant.

I know, right?, Sunday, 5 August 2007 03:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Speaking of Cure remixes, I'm listening to the relatively obscure "Let's go to Bed (milk mix)" and it would totally fit on a balearic mix. I think Saint Etienne's "Like a Motorway" would sit in there pretty well.

baaderonixx, Sunday, 5 August 2007 13:39 (seventeen years ago) link

man, that tullio di piscopo track is fantastic. i bought it (on ZYX) at SF's groove merchant years ago, and played the shit out of it when i used to have a downtempoish sunday night weekly at dalva. don cherry plays on it!

ftr karl I know you said on the other thread I hate balearic but honestly I was all over the (fine, proggier end of the) mid-00s balearic wave - studio, kate bush's aerial, lindstrom, strategy etc - there was a real sense of momentum and build to that stuff at its best, and we're entering the 20-years-later zone so i'm expecting grand-scale balearic revenance soon

imago, Thursday, 11 April 2024 16:57 (seven months ago) link

my bad imago! i didn't mean to flatten out your taste. i admit i sometimes use you as kind of a counterpoint to my own urge towards reduction/simplicity, but mostly b/c i'm fascinated by where our opinions align

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 11 April 2024 17:22 (seven months ago) link

haha no problem, i know i very much encourage the perception i'm a maximalism and progressiveness specialist but the reason i even still post to ilx is that i'm still keen to find those intersection points between my own sensibilities and the other regulars'. mid-00s balearic was fertile ground for this. i should really check this thread more often

new Double Geography album Open Water out today

default damager (lukas), Wednesday, 1 May 2024 06:06 (six months ago) link

Double Geography aka Duncan Thornley (one half of Weird Weather and studio engineer at MAP Studios), following the success of his debut album “The Indoor Gardener” (also on Invisible Inc) had sent Invisible Inc label boss GK Machine demos of his second and third album, which the label reluctantly declined on the basis that the music didn't sound quite right for the label. However, this fourth studio album fits the bill perfectly.

Man I'm curious what those other two albums sound like.
